We've eaten Japanese food from Michigan to Arizona to Taipei to Hakone to Tokyo to Kyoto, and this is just about the most mediocre we've had. Not bad, but not good, either, just...adequate. If you feel like dishing out $20-$25/person for adequate...be our guest. So much for the cuisine. \r

The restaurant is in dire need of a good scrubbing and a fresh coat of paint, and somebody with a broom should pay a visit to the vestibule. They need to change out the wailing Japanese Englebert Humperdink for some more traditional fare, like koto and shakuhachi. So much for the atmosphere. \r

When we were seated and served without oshibori (the hot towels that are part of why dining Japanese is such a refreshing and civilized experience), I figured it was just part of the restaurant's general decline. But then Japanese parties were seated to either side of us, and THEY got omoshibori. Zakkenayo! I guess at Nippon Kai, gaijin don't rate the courtesy that the Japanese are rightly famous for. \r

Save yourself the disappointment of a mediocre experience, and check out Musashi in Southfield, Yotsuba in Farm Hills, or Cherry Blossom in Novi. THey have their flaws, but the food is somewhat better, and at least they treat their customers with respect.
Pros: Used to be okay.
Cons: Not okay anymore.
