New York Vocal Coaching

I am a retired Medical Technologist who has a passion for music so much so that when I was in high school I watched The Sound of Music around 14 times and memorized all the songs in that movie. So since I loved music I decided long ago to bring back to my city of Davao in the Philippines- the old Romberg operetta songs and Hollywood movie themes and Spanish songs I used to hear when my parents and family would sing and play them on the piano and violin.\r \r I had the chance to visit my daughter in New York recently. She told me she booked me with Justin Stoney of the New York Vocal Coaching, bless her. I was thinking that maybe they wouldn't accept a 62-year old retiree and also was not a professional singer but the staff was very accommodating and helpful. Kelly the receptionist never failed to inform me if one or the other teachers were free. David, Travis and Julie (she with the voice of an angel). They were all very comfortable to work with each with their own technniques.\r \r When I first entered Justin's studio I had not read about him at all. If I did, maybe I wouldn't have had the nerve to go to him. I did have some sort of training with a voice teacher in the classical genre and I knew I was a coloratura soprano. But nothing prepared me for that UNBELIEVABLE first session with Justin Stoney. There were exercises I never heard of before and he was patient and helpful and fun- I cannot praise him enough! \r \r He told me I had a 3 1/2 vocal range from low Bflat to high F#6. How did he ever get THAT out of me! THAT IS HOW GOOD A VOCAL COACH HE IS!!! Never in my dreams did I know I had that wide a range,,,He had me belting out a Broadway song that first session. I just used to sing either in the low range for the bossas and sambas and the high coloratura kind of songs. Not the middle, I had no volume at all.\r \r I wish I lived in New York so I can go for lessons with Justin and his staff everyday. God bless them they make you feel special and that you CAN! I don't sing professionally, just for myself and friends but after Justin Stoney, I now feel I CAN. \r \r Look him up if you haven't yet. His biography and reviews are VERY EXCELLENT. Justin Stoney is DEFINITELY one of those people you are going to be grateful to for your whole life. I've never met and I am sure that I will never ever meet* a better vocal coach than Justin! ( *and what's more I'm absolutely sure that I will never ever even think of trying to find another one). I strongly believe that miracles do happen in this world and finding Justin is the best proof for my belief. He is the most professional, caring, inspiring vocal teacher I've ever seen and he changes your voice instantly. I'm not afraid to say that Justin is a WIZARD of voice! After several years of vocal lessons and reaching a point of sheer frustration with my vocal abilities, I had almost entirely lost my love of singing. Justin is simply an amazing coach and mentor. He truly inspired me and gave me the confidence to achieve what initially I thought would not have been possible. Justin is a wonderful teacher. I used to take voice lessons years ago, and recently realized how much I missed singing. I searched for voice teachers online, found Justin's website, and after reading the fabulous testimonials, I decided to book a trial session. I was completely impressed with Justin's vast knowledge, positivity, and obvious talent. Justin is AMAZING. I had never taken voice lessons until I came here, but he quickly made me feel at home and my singing has improved since day 1. He quickly identified my problems and we worked on making them better and healthier, and of course sound a hundred times better! Justin is simply the best voice teacher I have ever experienced. I am so grateful to have been recommended him. In a few lessons I have experienced a huge difference in my voice. I have always struggled with belting and Justin has shown me the correct way to use my voice, explaining the physical mechanics of the breath and vocal chords and patiently moving through exercises and songs. I have worked with quite a few vocal teachers, and Justin Stoney is by far the best. Our voices are precious things to us, and because of this it is sometimes difficult to learn to take risks and develop confidence in our gift. Justin has an amazing way of teaching people to find the beauty of thier voice and helping people recognize their inner genius. Also, he REALLY knows his craft, and will teach you what you need to know to understand in order to better your own. Seriously, he really really knows what he is doing. I have been studying with him for 2 months, and I am a completly differnt singer than I was before I started. Justin is amazing. There’s really no better way to put it. I’ve been with him since December 2009 and couldn’t be more pleased. I had taken lessons with another company right before Justin and had not had the best experience so I came to Justin with a chip on my shoulder. The difference with him was unbelievable. He is just so positive, patient, and helpful. I think I’ve asked him about 10,000 questions about singing and his advice on auditions, in general. He is always so sweet and eager to help. He has a way of explaining things and helping you to find your voice and what certain things should feel like in your body that totally makes sense! I know he prefers when people pick their own music so they have a connection with it, but I wanted him to help me pick a song that he thought would be good for my voice. He happily acquiesced. Cut to 2 months later, I had a new song that I picked out myself and didn’t want to work with the old song anymore. He wasn’t frustrated with my flakiness and was just as pleased to work with the new song. It’s easy to tell that he loves what he does and it makes it that much better to work with him! Justin Stoney is an absolutely AMAZING voice teacher. As a life coach, I support and empower people to achieve their goals. And this is exactly what Justin does for my voice. He has developed a unique method to teach in an inspiring way. He believes in my ability even more than I do. His sincere manner and the enthusiasm he exudes are most precious gifts for his students. He always responds to my state of mind and figures out what I need to learn at that moment. The exercises he has designed are customized for each student. I came to Justin as a somewhat mature artist (dance) but a complete beginner with the voice. The first major strength of his teaching is his flexibility--the ability to tailor his teaching to your specific goals. I was interested in learning as much as possible as quickly as I could, and I'm very happy with the results about 4 months into it. He identified my major problems right away, and balances targeted technical training with activities that solidify and showcase your strengths. He has a broad appreciation for musical genres. I am not a musical theatre actress and so I have always been insecure about going in for musical auditions. I did a session with Justin back in February because I had a musical audition. He was very precise with the musical points he taught me without overwhelming me with how little I know of my voice or how much work I have to do to improve it. I went in feeling very confident from my coaching. I got a callback but I only had one night to learn a new song. Justin was very kind and generous to teach me the song and sent the recording thru email despite of his loaded schedule. I booked the job, and it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have. I stumbled upon Justin after searching for a vocal coach in NYC for several months with no luck. I went to Justin as a professional actor with little to no vocal training. I was nervous for my first lesson because I had been trying to find a good coach for quite some time to no avail. I've studied with Justin for about 5 months now and my knowledge, interest, and vocal skill have seriously skyrocketed. Justin has an incredible ear and can hear what you are doing right or wrong before you can, and can always come up with the right exercise to help you correct or achieve what you need. But the reason Justin is such a wonderful teacher extends far beyond great exercises. Justin literally makes you feel like you are his only student. I know his schedule is insane from seeing his calendar but you would never know it when you're studying with him. You have his full and complete attention at all times.
