I love the New Museum. Right now, they're showing what they call a mid-career retrospective of Andrea Zittel, who is DA BOMB. A few weeks back I pulled the Zittel double header with this show and the concurrent show at Whitney Altria... what a great day. And cheap. Whitney Altria, free, New Museum 6 dollars. I intend on elaborating on why Zittel is so damn good at a later time, and I am sure everyone in the world is anticipating this upcoming analysis eagerly. I will only say it is functional yet subversive---functional and subversive, if you think about that, then you realize that's an interesting combination of qualities and worth thinking about. It is also visually interesting and engages like many things that are presented as 'art' cannot.
The New Museum is smallish, and perhaps some will be like, "this is it?"
The New Museum, which will soon be elsewhere, they're building a new building, has a great art bookstore, featuring some obscure titles and periodicals. It's like St. Mark's bookstore had a baby who only trafficked in art literature. I really like the whole thing.
