Best

I normally don't write reviews, but I feel like this place gets a bad rap. After reading some of these reviews, I was almost afraid to go in this place, but alas, I stopped in fo...

Worst

All right, this diner used to be Best Diner in the City. It's right off the Triboro, everyone sees it, and it's not as good as you think. I used to sing it's praises, and then I...

avoid at ALL TIMES 9/22/2008

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to read my little review. This is the WORST diner I've ever been to. It started when I came in, and 3 minutes later ordered an Irish coffee. Since it was 11.00 on a Sunday, the waitress told me that since everyone (who is everyone?! Not me or anyone else in the place!) is going to Church, they would not serve alcohol until 12.00. This is a blue law that is usually not enforced (secular society violation alert!!!). Then the waitress gave me a bad attitude. She did warm up closer to the end, but that did not make up. The food was average. Also, the support waiter, whose job it was to refill water, ignored me on purpose 3 times before coming by. I acted politely throughout the whole time. And to finish off this review, when I looked on my credit card statement, they overcharged me by 6 USD!!! I have heard even worse stories about this place from other people. Don't let this diner's ranking on the Travel Channel fool you- is BAAAAAD mon! Pros: what pros? Cons: too many to name more

A fine diner, for diner-y dining. 8/22/2008

The Neptune has always prominently displayed its accolades ""Voted best Diner in New York City"" etc... But the thing that strikes me most about the Neptune is not their uniqueness, but rather their sameness to every other diner I have ever wasted time drinking coffee in. The notable difference here is that they do all the things those other diners do, but they do them better. Their food is higher quality, their staff is slightly less gruff, and their milkshakes are a little bigger. all around maybe not the best diner, but definitely a little better. more

warning !! BE CAREFUL ......... 7/28/2008

People who are allergic and asthmatic should avoid going there since they spray cleaning solutions while all the foods are SERVED on the table .... making it a health hazard esp for the small children, old people and allergic / asthmatic patients!! Pros: 24 HOURS OPEN Cons: MANAGER MR JACK - REALLY ARROGANT AND TREATS YOU LIKE ..... more

Excellent restaurant 6/2/2008

I'm surprised to see the bad reviews for this place, the food is ALWAYS excellent and the portions are enormous. The waiters may not win the congeniality award but they have always been attentive to our parties and served us well. And BelAire better than Neptune??? I don't think so. BelAire's salads were never as crispy fresh as Neptune's. The food in general does not have the flavor and quality that Neptune has. Some of the stuff they brought out at BelAire was kind of wilted and stale looking. For my money Neptune has consistently been an excellent dining experience. Pros: Great food, big portions, always fresh and delicious more

Worst customer service ever- avoid this place 5/26/2008

I showed up on a busy Sunday after reading the sign out front of the diner stating: Voted Best Diner by the NY Daily News. So I figured it must be good. The minute I walked up, I felt a tense energy but I walked in with a positive attitude. My friend and I signed in for a party of 4- while we were waiting on our other 2 guests to find parking because there was not enough in their parking area or on 31st. We were called 25 minutes later by an old guy playing host. When we explained our missing party members were outside, he rudely said: ""I don't have time for this"". Strike one. Then I told him I was going to call them on their mobile to come inside and he told us we would have to be put on the list and wait all over again. Strike two. Then I asked if we could be seated with just 3 members at a table for 4 while the other 1 shows up and he said: ""don't waste my time"". I was done. This all happened within 2 minutes. Instead of arguing back or even trying to defend myself I said: ""I will take my business elsewhere"". He said: ""Good""! No one should be treated like that- ever. Now, I am here posting a negative review which will affect their business and I will go elsewhere. One should always be gracious & kind to everyone because you never know who you are going to run into. more

Doesn't live up to the ""hype"" 5/15/2008

Don't expect any kind of service unless you are spending money there everyday. I don't know what it was like 3 years ago when it was ""the best diner in queens"", but it is WAY overpriced($9+ for a mediocre gyro w/fries....IN ASTORIA?!) and the service is terrible. I'd rather goto Burger King across the street.... Pros: I'm finished searching... Cons: Food, Prices, Service more

Worst service I ever experienced.... 3/23/2008

I'm a local, but this is the worst diner to go. I rather walk 3 extra blocks to Mike's or Igloo to eat. The waiters are rude and they just stand around if they have no desire to be there. The first time I went, I had to seat myself and then got up to get a menu. The waiter just stood there watching me. I walked out. The next time, just to see if the rudeness was a one time thing, the same service was deliverd. I walked out again. Go to Mike's or Igloo near Ditmars Blvd on 31st Street. more

Not nearly as bad as the reviews. 7/22/2007

Okay, the Neptune is a LOCAL diner. What that means is that locals (esp. those speaking Greek) get a bit better treatment, and (as with most local diners in NY) the service is spotty, especially when they are not busy. However, the food is very good, especially (a propos of the name), anything that once swam. I highly recommend the broiled seafood platter, which is excellent. By the way, I fail to believe that any waiter from the Neptune ""chased after"" anyone over a tip. But this isn't the New York Times, so there aren't any fact-checkers here. Pros: Seafood Cons: Service more

NIGHTMARE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5/19/2007

Beware !!!! THE WAITER working here is the biggest savage ! After the worst service ever the waiter actually chased after us and told us that we could have done better on his tip !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Left him $ 100 total for A $ 89 bill. Beyond what he deserved. First he slams A glass of soda spilling on the table. No appology. Never refills any drinks . Brought the kids the dessert before clearing the table. Never told the rest of us for dessert. CUSTOMERS NIGHTMARE !!! WOULD NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN IF THEY PAID ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

NY's Best Diner? Really? 12/29/2006

Whatever ""Best Diner"" means doesn't fit my definition of what I consider to be the best. If by best they mean: bad service and high prices, then they're absolutely correct -- it is the best diner in Queens! Pros: Food, Space, Parking Cons: Service, Crowded more

Not the best, but not the worst... 12/6/2006

My closest neighborhood diner. Note: every time I have gone here alone, the waiters have virtually ignored me! Do they not approve of women eating out by themselves? Weird. This doesn't happen when I go there with friends. more

Worst service in Astoria 4/1/2006

I moved to the area 6 months ago and was excited to have a 24-hour eatery nearby. Unfortunately, I have to say that the service here is TERRIBLE. The waiters are rude and disrepectful. Though the food usually comes out fairly quickly, the order is wrong half of the time. Don't bother complaining because the managers are just as rude. Do yourself a favor and try Mikes Diner or the Igloo on Ditmars, or The Bel-Aire Diner (my personal favorite) instead. Pros: Decent food, Clean, 24-hour Cons: Bad service, Bad service, Bad service more

Better than Bel-Aire. 11/19/2005

The burgers are everything you dream of in a burger and the fries are heaven. The service is attentive and the place is super clean. The Bel-Aire cannot measure up. Oh, the breakfasts are great and plentiful and the spinach pie made my mouth water. more

Great eats, simple service 6/25/2005

Went for dinner: Great food, decent service, and excellent location (perfect via driving or ""N"" train). Read the other reviews before I went. For diner fare (and even many average restaurants), the food is remarkably good! Yes, the portions are big. Our waiter may be considered minimalistic to brusque, but he was competent. Honestly, I don't go to diners expecting 4-star waitstaff and treatment: the waiter was decently efficient, that's all I expect. I would definitely go back again and eager to try their breakfasts. more

Fantastic diner 4/16/2005

The portions are HUGE and the food is great...staff is very attentive...I love the tuna melt. Their salads are very large!! Never had a bad meal there (and usually need to take a ""doggybag"") Pros: Huge Portions, Nice Staff more

It's not the best...accept it 7/17/2003

All right, this diner used to be Best Diner in the City. It's right off the Triboro, everyone sees it, and it's not as good as you think. I used to sing it's praises, and then I had some very poor service on several occasions and I found a better diner, which is the new ""Best Diner in the City"" The Bel-Aire on 21st St. and Broadway. Ir's what this place should be. Pros: Location Cons: Poor service, poor parking, just poor more

I beg to differ 12/17/2002

I was quite disappointed that the ""best diner in Queens"" was anything but! My chicken sandwich was Chicken on bread...nada mas! Perhaps I'll get the burger next time! The service was less than nice Pros: choices, inexpensive Cons: bad food, mean waitstaff more

No one can make a better feta cheese omm 10/4/2002

Yes, no one can make a better feta cheese ommelette than Neptune Diner! I lived in Astoria for 2 years and believe me, I have tried many diners in Queens and never had a tastier omellette. Also I recommend the cheesecake with strawberries. The food is consistently good, they are open for 24 hours and the servers are friendly. What else can you expect from a Greek Diner? more
