My wife and I were given an estimate in May of $7100.00 from Walt to move our belongings from Orange County to Denver. He said it would be very unlikely that it would be more given he had been an estimator for many years and could pretty much tell by looking at our stuff what the weight was likely to be. He gave us the contract to sign, stating the contract was typical for the industry. They came on the day they were supposed to and all the men were hard-working and professional. They were also in a big hurry. When we met the moving truck in Denver, the first two items (of course our most expensive items) were taken off the truck. One was our baby-grand piano. When it was uncovered, there was a huge chip in the wood on the top. I asked what happened. The driver said he saw it happen back when they were loading it - one of the guys dropped it. Keep in mind this is a $20,000.00 piano. He said not to worry, the company would take care of it. The other item was a $15,000.00 baseball memorabilia picture. They broke it into pieces. I contacted Nelson Moving and they told me to contact North American. Bottom line - All anyone would reimburse me was $300.00 for both. They said I should have taken additional insurance on those items. I called Chapman at Nelson Moving and he was arrogant and unapologetic.
Two weeks later I got my Visa bill. It was charged $8863.00, a difference of $1763.00 from what I was originally quoted. I called up North American and they said the actual weight was over 4,000 lbs. more than estimated. Talk about a bait and switch! This has been my experience with Nelson.
