While the steaks are good, they're not great. Unfortunately, the quality of food served here has deteriorated over the years. Pros: Quiet, Service Cons: Overpriced

the first of many visits I will make! 6/14/2004

I ws very impressed by every part of our visit to Murray's: the food (supreme!), the decor (charming) and the service (perfect). I will definitely be back for their butter knife steak and butter spaetzle. Pros: tasty food, ambiance more

It's a dining experience! 3/11/2004

Going out to dinner should be more then excellent food, it's an entire experience. Murray's atmosphere is created by years and years of experience. The food is excellent, but being waited on by the same person who waited on me at my first communion diiner is worth coming back over and over!!! Ruth's Chris, Mortons and the like will never have this kind of atmosphere or charm. more

Best...Steak...Ever 2/18/2004

Honestly. I've eaten at Murray's twice, and both times the experience was nothing short of sublime. The ambience takes you back to the forties (or shows you the forties if you're not that old), and the wait staff has been great -- maybe because I've come in a decent-sized group both times. The mashed potatoes and desserts are darn good, but who are we fooling? This is all about the steak (funny how many negative reviews didn't eat the steak at this STEAK HOUSE). Every bite, I felt like Meg Ryan at the restaurant in When Harry Met Sally. I've been to Manny's, and it's no competition in my opinion. I'm not pulling in 6 figures so I can't eat at Murray's often, but it's a very special treat whenever the occasion comes up, and I won't miss it. Pros: The BEST steaks, Non-steak good, too, Classy joint more

An Experience! 10/18/2003

Probably one of the finest restaurants in the USA! I have yet to meet it's equal in my travels. It has provided continuous fine dining for many years. The Silver Butterknife Steak is truly a dining experience. Cons: Rather pricey. more

Awesome Steak 7/25/2003

I vote this place best steakhouse in Minnesota. If you order it up Pittsburgh Blue, they don't even batt an eyelash. Pittsburgh Blue is a steak cooked very rare, but burned on the outside to a steely blue. MMMM! Pros: Close Parking, Valet Parking, No Smoking more

The Best 5/15/2003

I have eaten in many steakhouses from New York to LA and Murray's simply had the best steak I have ever eaten anywhere. Their Dinner Steak is incomperable. Measure a steak house by its steak and you can't go wrong. Mix too much other stuff in there and that is is the only way anyone could rank Murray's lower than No. 1. Pros: Steak, Steak, Steak Cons: Who cares, When the steaks, Are this good more

The Best Steak.... 5/13/2003

I have tried all the Twin Cities steak houses... (also NYC steak houses)....Murrays is hands down the best...Its $$$...but worth it Pros: salad and potato incl Cons: a bit expensive more

back to the future 3/18/2003

My wife and I tried a bunch of side dishes at the bar (she was abstaining for Lent). The beer selection is poor (no surprise), the side dishes were small and under-flavored by even steakhouse standards. The ""vegetable medley"" looked like it was Birdseye from the freezer. The fries were nothing special. Of course, the real story here are the steaks and since I did not have one, I cannot comment. But one wonders if the steaks could be that much better since these vegetables and fries were so poorly conceived. One good thing: the bar offers the best potato chips I have ever tasted as barsnacks. Pros: bar snack chips Cons: food, smoky bar, too warm more

Still going strong 2/9/2003

Murray's is the quintessential Minneapolis Steakhouse. In fact, on our visit the 2nd and 3rd generation owners were both buzzing around the dining room to the serenade of the piano and violin. The silver butterknife steak for three was excellent, one of the best steaks we've ever had. The sides were only OK (but that's not what you come for). The raspberry pie was impressive. The berries had incrdible in-season flavor (how, I don't know, we dined in January . . . they must have a great supplier). Wine list is up to date and appropriate to pair with the food. We had the '99 Chateau St. Jean Cab which worked very well. Pros: great steak, atmosphere more

Can't beat the original 2/7/2003

Great food, better service, unique, original, unmatched ambience. Beats going to one of the chain houses anyday. more

Class 2/4/2003

The restaurant is from out of the past which a lot of people still enjoy. The waitresses are older and show it the way they treat the public. They don't bounce up and say ""Hi guys"" to people who are old enought to be at best there fathers and in some cases there grandfathers. It is called respect. These servers work to get the best shifts. The service shows it. The value is good. It is a special event type of place. Ive been going there for 7 decades and still think it's great. more

Heat it up to body temp please! 1/14/2003

I've enjoyed Murray's steaks for 13 years now. The ambience is classic to nearly musty but unusually consistent as is the food. The staff is attentive and can still quickly move around even without the aid of a Lil' Rascal scooter. I prefer the locker-aged New York strips over the filet mignon's and the evening sommelier has typically been square on the beans with qualified recommendations. My only unanswered question remains... does the musical ensemble remember meeting the original composers of their well-played classical pieces? Pros: Tasty steaks, Consistent quality, Intuitive sommelier Cons: Same dust from '41, Mummified staff, Long wait to seat more

go for the silver 1/13/2003

there's really only two reasons to go to Murray's, aside from Murray, I suppose. The silver butter knife steak special. Fork tender is the word here. Served by people who must have been standing there when Murray decided to build a restaurant around them. Experience bith - they're worth it. more

consistent 1/3/2003

Murray's has been an excellent dining establishment for years and years. I've never heard of anyone being disappointed when dining there. Sometime the wait can be excruciating in the evening - but you're always treated with class. The garlic bread is like none other. I recall when Mrs. Murray would watch over the restaurant and the garlic bread with great pride and aplomb. Pros: good food Cons: crowded during peak h more

Best date spot 1/3/2003

With the silver butter knife steak you can not miss. I loved being taken back to a romantic era. My now husband and I enjoyed a romantic evening and split the silver butter knife steak. The best steak I have ever had. I grew up in the twin cities and now live in New Orleans and there is no comparison. If you do not want steak, you do not have reason to be here. more

Worth Every Penny 11/14/2002

After traveling the world, I still can not find a steak that holds a flame to the dry aged perfection that Murray's serves. I have been to Murray's on several occasions and can't fathom that people can rate the food a zero! Preparing a dry aged steak is an art and Murray's has created a masterpiece. The last time I was there the British Broadcasting Company was there because Murray's was on the 'Top Ten Steak Restaurants in the United States"". The staff may need a reminder that smiles can get you a bigger tip but, for the steak I would walk through hot coals. From the other reviews it seems hit or miss, but the food has always been on for me! The people who believe the ambience is outdated, missed the point, it allows you to relax and even makes a workaholic consider coming for tea time. Pros: Perfect Steak, Live Music, Classic Setting more

excellent 10/25/2002

the most delicious garlic toast I have ever tasted, great service and the butterknife steaks are a treat to remember Pros: service, quality, atmosphere Cons: price more

Royal Treatment 10/7/2002

ATTENTIVE waitstaff. Wonderful, vintage atmosphere. Fantastic food. Go to Murray's because you want to feel good about the money you pay for an evening out and because you want the best food quality and taste. You will never be disappointed. Pros: Delicious Food, Great Service more

In business since 1941 10/2/2002

It strikes me that the restaurant had to be around since befor Pearl Harbor. I say this because they have an old Life magazine advertising their silve butter knife steak in a issue dated December 6,1941. So much for history. Simply stated Murray's is the second most over priced and overrated restaurant of this catagor. the only restaurant worse than them is Goodfellow's. Save your money for Manny's of if seafood is your preference then go across the hall to Oceanaire. Cons: SERVICE ROTTEN, RUDE WAITERS, OVER OVER PRICED more
