Best

Amazing, fun atmosphere. Nice workers, great good and music. I live in Alabama and I would drive down here just for this restaurant. So much fun.

Worst

The place is only good for two things, the music, and dancing. Locals know not to eat here. Go listen to...

wonderful! 9/2/2009

my boyfriend had already eaten here and suggested it to me while on the trip. the restaurant was refreshing compared to the the humid 90 degree weather, and the food was awesome. we ordered the seafood gumbo, boudin link (good but small for the price), and the seafood platter (a huge amount of shrimp, oysters, crawfish, stuffed crab, jambalaya and french fries), all of which were delicious. highly recommended! Pros: huge portions, friendly Cons: a little expensive more

Best Gumbo 9/16/2008

I'm a Cajun, born and raised (but relocated), and I recently had the opportunity to dine at Mulate's in New Orleans. The food was outstanding... reminded me of my grandma's. The service was great, and the music even better. Definitely a great family alternative while in New Orleans. My kids loved it! Pros: Very family friendly Cons: No parking lot more

Average food, and prices a little on the high end. 6/13/2008

As a born and raised south Louisiana boy, I have to admit this is not what I expected fom a local Cajun style resturant. The food was average and the prices a bit high. But then again, maybe I expect too much as my entire family is ""Cajun"" and Cajun food is what I was raised on. The place and the ambiance is nice and the service pretty good. If you are looking for a taste of Cajun cuisine, it's overall not a bad place to try. Pros: service is pretty good Cons: average food quality and prices a little high more

Great cajun food 5/22/2008

While in NO for a business convention a group of us went to this restaurant for lunch because it was close to the convention center. It was delicious! I had the fried crab platter and I have to say it is some of the best crab I have ever eaten in my life. This is the real deal when it comes to cajun food. The service was a little slow, but the place was really packed so we didn't mind waiting too much. I wish we could have returned for a 2nd meal while visiting but just couldn't make it happen. If I ever again return to New Orleans I would absolutely again go to this restaurant and would recommend it highly. Pros: Great cajun food! Cons: Service was slow more

Good Music, average food 7/19/2007

The music last night was Lee Benoit, he and his family were great, he's a great singer, we bought their CD. The food was OK, my wife and son ordered the shrimp/crab pasta, pasta and sauce tasted good.\r \r Daughter had fried shrimo, kinda heavey tasting, didn't taste very fresh, fried alright but not a good flavor. \r \r I got the Catfish Mulates, Catfish topped with Crawfish Etoufee. Crawfish in the etoufee were old tasting and gray looking, Jambalaya was OK. Ordered the catfish blackened and it was breaded instead. \r \r Desserts were very good and good coffee. Dinner for 4 $100.00, Great atmosphere there that night, dancing, etc. Maybe caught it on a bad night. Pros: Good Music and atmosphere Cons: mediocre food more

Great Cajun food - and most certainly for locals! 5/16/2007

I've been going to Mulate's with my family since I was a child and have always loved it. Sure, it appeals to tourists in some respects -it's located across from the Riverwalk, one of the most popular tourist spots. But I think they have never let their food lose quality just because they're coming in. Affordable food that satisfies any craving for somethin' Cajun. Pros: Delicious food that's affordable more

TOURISTY 4/8/2007

It is COMPLETELY TOURISTY. You rarely will see a local here. The food is below mediocre and overpriced. Suggestion: go to a local restaurant (K-Paul's, Bon Temps, Domilise's Mandina's) then head out to Decatur/Charters/Frenchman, etc and go to one of the many music spots. more

THE ONLY NAME IN CAJUN FOOD! 6/19/2006

As a woman of Spanish/ Cajun heritage I asked my grandfather, a New Orleans resident where I could go to zydeco he promptly replied ""well of course, Mulates!"". I immediately told relatives of the place and they fell in love with it. It feels like an old dancehall spread out, and has a stage at the back. Zydeco bands come and play nightly. The crab au gratin is good (but pricey), the red beans and rice and the absolute best on this planet, the french bread is good also. There might be other copycats, especially here in Texas, but Mulate's can trample them. Pros: EXCELLENT food Cons: high prices but worth it more

mulate's 2/16/2004

Real Cajun food! Not pseudo cajun for tourists. What makes people think that if you add plenty of spices and tabasco sauce food becomes Cajun? Pros: inexpensive, good service, atmosphere more
