Editorial review from Citysearch 11/8/2012

Had dinner Tuesday at Moran's Chelsea...Really liked mostly everything ordered. Baked clams, salad w/blu cheese dressing, all great. Strip steak, mashed & creamed spinich. I did not care for the spinich, I like it chopped fine, I guess that's a personal thing. Mashed spuds were just like my mom used to make. Steak great. Coffee, desert excellent. My only gripe is the treated logs thrown on the fire. The scent I find sickening. It passes but because of it, I won't be coming back. more

Craving for more 12/13/2011

The best steak I had ever eaten. It was on this restaurant. I could not forget that time. It was in the evening, I really hungry during that night and I was craving for a steak. The first choice I had in mind was Moran's Restaurant right away. more

Exceptional wedding reception location 5/9/2011

Moran?s was a perfect venue for our wedding reception for many reasons: it has a friendly atmosphere, excellent food and drink, extremely friendly staff and the best event coordinator/manager you could wish for, Tom Murphy. From the moment we first met Tom I think I knew that Moran?s was where I wanted to hold our wedding reception. Tom is very straight talking, none of the typical NYC ?fluff? and he made it clear very early on that he would have everything covered on the wedding day and in safe hands. Everytime we met Tom he was very professional, courteous and although he?s obviously a very busy man, he fit us in even when we turned up unannounced. Over the months we worked with Tom on our wedding, he showed flexibility (we changed the table arrangement many times and completed the reception in a rather odd order), willingness to go above and beyond (he entertained specific requests for Australian wine and a specific signature cocktail from Australia) and shared his experience which allowed us to develop, with him, the best reception we would have hoped for (in fact better!). As the wedding drew closer, Tom kindly allowed us to store items at Moran?s (we made our own centerpieces, place names etc) and he also dealt with enquiries from other members of the wedding party such as my Mum! Tom was even gracious enough to work with our wedding day planner and ensure that they fulfilled their duties as well. On the day of the wedding Tom and his staff were beyond wonderful. Everyone was looked after extremely well and he even had a team charged with completing our photo guest book for us - way beyond the call of duty, but immensely appreciated. He ran everything like clockwork, dealt with anything thrown his way (we had a birthday cake to present and had to present it earlier than expected - the cake Moran?s produced was amazing) and all our guests kept commenting on how much they enjoyed the food and location of the reception. Looking back on our wedding day now, I still find it astounding that we were able to find a reception location in the middle of Manhattan, at an extremely reasonable price and with such a great team of people (and great food!). I can?t recommend Moran?s to anyone enough - Tom and his staff go above and beyond what you would expect and it?s because of their efforts that our wedding reception was the amazing success it was. Truly exceptional. more

Great place for a wedding 6/3/2010

I recently photographed a beautiful wedding at Moran's and have to say I was really impressed with the room and the overall feel of the place. The back room is made for weddings and everything looked beautiful. The food was really outstanding and the staff was very pleasant to work with. I'd highly recommend it for weddings under 100 people (or however many they are suited for). You can view some of my photos through my blog which can be seen at danielkrieger(dot)com Pros: beautiful private room, great food, excellent service Cons: not really made for super large weddings more

A Chelsea Gem 3/9/2010

My wife and I were looking for a place to get a drink after seeing a play nearby. We are not from NYC so we weren't expecting much. As we were walking by this quaint restaurant, we noticed a fireplace in the window. Being the middle of winter we were immediately drawn in. Well, once we walked in, we were immediately greeted and had our coats taken and hung up. We were going to sit at the bar and just have a drink, but once you smell the food being cooked in the kitchen (which is open for all to see) you have no choice but to eat. And eat we did. My wife and I both shared the fried Zucchini which is shoestring style. Light crispy and VERY addicting. We also shared the Mac and Cheese which is TO DIE FOR. As we weren't that hungry after all that, we then shared the Grilled Seafood. Which was so delicious and fresh. Lobster tail, Scallops,Salmon and Shrimp. All of my favorites. We will definitely be coming back. Possibly just to eat here! Pros: AMAZING Staff and food, REAL fireplace more

Irish Illusion 11/30/2009

Appears warm, Irish. But has inhospitable manager. And be aware of mandatory service charge Pros: table service Cons: mediocre food, high prices, inhospitable manager, more

truly love the food at morans. i like the fish and the deserts are great! service is great too they are so warm and friendly. they run a very respectable establishment that is organized and pristine. more

good food 12/10/2008

good menu with top-notch service. Wonderful location, close to all. Delicious seafood platter. Large portions. A place to go with colleagues and/or special occasions. Been there on business. more

Quick lunch 10/20/2008

The corned beef sandwich I had was a bit pricey, but solid. The fries were great too. Drinks were refreshed immediately, and service was excellent. A good place for a business meeting-- there's plenty of seating, it's somewhat upscale, and there is minimal risk of offending anyone. more

Delicious Sefood 10/14/2008

I am not reviewing the actual restaurant as much as a particular dish. If you go to The Moran?s, I highly recommend the jumbo shrimp with a zesty cocktail sauce. The House salad , was this good! One of the best meals I have had in New York. The only drawback - just slightly too salty. That's pretty salty because I add salt to EVERYTHING. The shrimps are also cooked so perfectly. In addition, their drinks were perfect too.I would recommend to anyone. more

Best Place for Bat Mitzvah 5/9/2008

We had our daughter's Bat Mitzvah here and it couldn't have gone any better. Service was great, food was great, atmosphere was wonderful and staff was so helpful and friendly. I've had many friends that attended the Bat Mitzvah come back for dinner with and without us. They loved it. more

Great Steak 12/30/2006

Last night my dinner at Moran's was extrodinary. I had the Filet Mignon cooked exactlly to the tempature I specificed which came with mashed potatoes that tasted homemade. My boyfriend ordered the Surf and Turf which I tried. The lobster was incredible, nothing I have ever experienced in New York City, usually lobster only tastes good to me when I'm up in Maine. After dinner we ordered desert and then he proposed to me! It was the best place to have been proposed to. The scene at Moran's is extremlly romantic with dim lighting, fireplaces, waterford crystals, brick, wood and the christmas decorations were spectacular. Moran's has a very comfortable, warm, welcoming and romantic setting with wonderful food and excellent service. I can not wait to return. more

Inviting atmosphere, great food! 12/4/2006

I recently dined with a group of six at Moran's in Chelsea -- we had an excellent experience! We were seated at a back table near the fireplace and Christmas tree - very cozy atmosphere! The waiter was prompt (but then a little vacant once the restaurant filled up) and drinks were served quickly. We all ordered different food - sole stuffed with lobster, strip steak, seafood linguine, surf & turf -- everything was delicious! I was disappointed the restaurant was out of creamed spinach that night (and it was early) - as it's my favorite. Prices were on target, most entrees were in the $27 range. more

Total Disappointment 11/14/2006

We went there for my birthday after reading the reviews on this site. Thnking it will be romantic with good food. What a total disappointment!! Everything from the bread to the wine to the main course was horrible. The seafood was fishy, the meat was dry and hard and the vegetable was salty. It was like eating frozen microwave dinner but 10 times the price. DO NOT GO EVER!! You've been warned. Pros: Prompt seating Cons: Everything else more

5 star price, 3 star food ... 10/25/2006

I read the reviews and was a skeptical of the reviews so I decide to test the water. Bam! They were right. The place was nice but definitely not great and it was by no means the most romantic place. The food was fine but I would not say great, especially for the price of it. Good luck to all of you skeptical review reader - like myself ... :) Pros: Place is ok Cons: Too pricey for the quality of food. more

If Only the Quality Matched the Prices... 8/10/2006

My wife and I had been driving past Moran's on occasion for years, finally decided to make a reservation and give it a shot. We arrived around 6 PM one very chilly Saturday night, were greeted warmly and were seated at a comfortable table within sight of the fireplace. We thought, ""This is great, we're in for a terrific evening.."" Pros: Terrific ambience, friendly service, warm and friendly atmosphere Cons: Terrible, terrible food more

Nice place, nice service, quality food 7/9/2006

Had wedding here in '97, back at least once a year on anniversary - always enjoy the food & memories Pros: Ambience more

We ate the food at our own wedding! 6/24/2006

It was that good. Great steaks, fabulous desserts, even the vegetables and salads were excellent. The baby lamb chops are deservedly famous. What's more, the portions were huge and the value even bigger. All thanks to that humble genius of a manager, Tom Murphy. Even the jaded Manhattanites and snobbish Bostonians among our guests were impressed! A great place to tie the knot or just loosen your belt. Pros: Pretty room with fireplaces, copper and crystal. more
