excellent waterfront dining 11/1/2007

I can not believe anyone wouldn't think the Mooring is a great place. It has a great waterfront dining room, indoors and out. The food is always amazing, we eat here several times a month, being locals. We always bring out of town guests here, you can't beat the view. The service is usually great and the as I said we are never dissapointed with the food. The halibut with pistatios and scallop chowder are terrific, as are the lobster spring rolls and bag of donuts. The wine list is extesive with a lot of 1/2 bottle selections also. Parking would be nice but it is Newport and most places don't offer parking. Find a meter, they go off at 9 and the night is free after that. Pros: great view and food is always good Cons: no parking, need a reservation more

dinner is over priced 10/21/2007

Bad Night to go - will try again another time! 9/9/2007

My husband & I decided to come to this place on a Thursday night (730ish) mostly to avoid the weekend 'rush'. We were not seated right away and there were PLENTY of open tables available. We waited at the bar and we weren't even noticed until maybe 5 minutes later. Got 2 beers to ease out the wait which set us back almost 10 bucks. After about 20 minutes we are seated under the canopy area looking over the harbor but on the upper deck. Chairs were uncomfortable. Waiter was terrible as well. It was very loud, with lots of shouting and talking and not to mention crying kids. (who takes their kids to a rest. like this? - I wouldn't exactly say it was kid friendly!!) I ordered the mooring scampi and my husband reluctantly ordered an open faced turkey sandwich (I am the seafood lover). I decided to try lobster again since my first time 12 years ago. Our food arrives about 25 minutes later and Im not a chef or anything but I dont think it even takes 15 minutes to cook SEAFOOD. My plate was $36 and it consisted of a bunch of scallop fillers...2 pieces of shrimp and a raggedy looking lobster tail. Maybe 2 out of 10 scallops were cooked decently, the rest were mushy and undercooked. My TWO PIECES of shrimp were OVERCOOKED and rubbery! The lobster was chewy and overcooked. Our waiter was slow and we seemed rush just to get out of there, requesting our bill AND paying WHILE eating.\r \r I would probably give it another try alone, later in the winter months and probably right as it opens in the day. But for now, it gets 1 star. I was disappointed. Pros: View Cons: Still paid for parking @ 930p in a public lot, noisy, slow service more

Don't Miss the Scallop Chowder 6/28/2007

I found this restaurant through opentable dot com and I am glad I went. I had the scallop chowder which was flavorful. The broth was more thin like soup than thick like chowder but the flavor was there. I had the surf and turf for dinner which had an amazing mushroom demi glace. The shrimp were dry but not terrible. My filet mignon was cooked just the way I wanted it. I would eat here again if in the area but I would order something else, only to try a new item. I would order dessert next time as well. This restaurant offers an incredible view of the wharf. Pros: Right on the wharf, prompt polite service Cons: Noisy more

I trust no other in Newport! 4/3/2007

I was a little baffled by the other 2 reviews, The Mooring is practically the only place I will go in Newport.\r I average 1-2 times per month, but with a little one it's hard!\r It is the same chef since 2003, and the renovation has allowed the menu to shine!\r Pricing is average, and the menu is all day, so you can grab a beer and sandwich on a busy Saturday night and be out the door for under $20! Not many places in Newport can do that.\r I do, though, now avoid Saturday and Friday nights because it's almost impossible to get a table! They are truly one of the busiest places in Newport! more

Avoid the summer months 12/12/2006

The Mooring has undergone an extensive renovation that actually opens up the back bar area to wonderful views of the water. The walls that once enclosed the back bar have been removed and now afford views of the dining area. Being a local I avoid this place in the summer, go in the winter months for a far better experience. I do believe the food has suffered since the reopening, not up to the same standards. I prefer to sit at the bar for a burger or sandwich. The meals can be average and in a tourist area very expensive. Also the cost in the summer to park in the lot right in front of the restaurant is outrageous at $20.00. The Mooring does not validate parking. In the winter months you can park in the same lot after 9:00pm for free. Pros: Decor, water views Cons: Parking more

Pass this one by!!! 9/26/2006

Their once great menu has turned mediocre! The regular chef must have been replaced....food is being served undercooked, overly greasy and certainly not deserving of the high prices. Three of the five dinners we ordered could not be eaten (soaked in grease, or undercooked) I have heard similar stories from other tourists who have eaten there. At one time, I thought very highly of this restaurant, and I was surprised to find it has changed so dramatically. At this time I would not recommend The Mooring....there are many other fine restaurants nearby to choose from. Pros: Good location, waterfront Cons: Poor food quality more

Great Seafood! 12/2/2002

I am from Memphis and was in Newport for business. I stayed at the Mariott and found it be nice. Great workout room. Anyway, the frontdesk recommended the Mooring. It was a short walk, in the snow! But, the restaurant is very inviting. The service was great. And the food was wonderful. I had the ""bucket of mussels"", the clam chowder and the seafood caserole special. It was full of flavor and just what I wanted. I'd visit them again. Pros: great food, great service more

So-so 11/23/2002

The food is well-prepared if uninspired. Ambiance is relaxed and 'very Newport'. However, what would have been an 8 or 9 night was ruined by the rude bartender we encountered while waiting for our table. Knocked the rating down considerably. My husband and I will head for Clark Cooke from now on. Pros: view, parking Cons: rude staff more

A MUST STOP!!!!!!!! 8/7/2002

As an avid Newport visitor, summer is not summer without a trip, I highly recommmend the Mooring. It's off the ""beaten path"" right on the habor, a great view. Wonderful and interesting dishes not to mention the friendly and professional service. Has never let us down in 12 years. A MUST STOP!!!!!!! Pros: Great Parkimg more
