great asian food 4/21/2009

The food was awesome! The steak plate with cilantro sauce was exceptionally delicious and it costs less than $10. The sandwiches were great too. And all the plates were huge, which prevented me from trying the soups and salads...this place was much smaller than I expected, yet cozy and we were able to stay as long as we wished. Pros: food, service Cons: small more

mooncake foods is a must for great pan asian food. the best dishes are the miso glazed salmon, fish tacos and the steak dish. the lobster mango rolls are great starters. prices are unbeatable and the staff is always very friendly from the waitresses, waiter and the chefs. more

Hidden gem 3/14/2008

I went in there randomly the other day, even though it was busy, i dont have to wait long to order, a minute after i ordered my drink was on the table and 5 minutes later the food was there! Quality of the food is amazing for its price (sliced steak platter is less than $9!)... I loved it. Now i'm about to order my lunch delivered from there :) Pros: Delicious food, very affordable menu, cozy Cons: small space but the food makes up to it :) more

It's a mooncake! 8/30/2007

This place is amazing! And consistent! And always fresh! I order here at least once a week. I always get the same thing, cilantro steak entree. I am not a creature of habit, but I can't get enough of this dish. Almost two years I've been addicted. I dream about it. I am in love with it. To be perfectly honest, I've never once actually step foot in the restaurant. Always ordered in, and always was extermely happy. Pros: Delicious, fresh, tasty, inventive, unique, friendly Cons: None. more

Randomly delicious 3/1/2007

Most random location and random place and random menu. But freakin' terrific. And priced really reasonably. A clean but bare-boned interior, small and diner-esque with a good vibe and a very friendly, welcoming staff. The food is the hero here, and they have the most unique and surprising menu I've seen... and everything on it rocks. Literally everything on the menu is amazing. more

Fresh, zesty food with a familial vibe! 2/8/2007

Mmm, Mooncake. Few restaurants I've been to consistently offer such a high quality of freshness and zing in such a wide range of dishes. When I was there last I had fresh edamame soup, a rather inventive creation I never thought I'd end up trying. Delicious, energizing. Wish I could remember exactly which salad I had (it was terrific) but I know I had a wonton soup that was also a home run. Mooncake fits the bill for me because the flavor quotient is high, their food gives you all the vitamins and nutrients you'll need to power up and go about your business for the rest of the day, and it does so with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Everybody working there's in a good mood there because they're into the food too -- always a telltale positive sign in a restaurant. Put this one on your list and set a date to visit! Pros: Flavor factor is high! The food stands on its own because it is so fresh. Cons: Let me get back to you on that. more

Healthy Late Night Choice 1/2/2007

As usual, I went to Citysearch to find a place for me and my fiance to eat on the late night tip after church. The first choice that popped up was Mooncake. Everything that was described sounded tasty and healthy, right up our alley. Saving for our wedding, the price was right too! I ordered the steak salad and my baby had the grilled chicken. His food looked lovely and tasted even better, with sides of rice and crispy green beans. My salad was bountiful and full of spice. I wish it had a bit of sweetness to balance out the overpowering sourness. The waitstaff was very friendly. My only pet peeve was our being told that they were closing in 10 minutes; I thought that was rude. Working in the service industry myself, I would never say that to a client! That being said, I would definitely go back because the food was\r yummy and the ginger tea was unforgettable! Pros: quality of food, affordable prices, close to subway Cons: comment about closing soon more

Just Lovely 9/28/2006

My friend and I went to this place merely on a whim because it was listed under ""best cheap eats in NYC"" but we were in for a pleasant surprise! The decor is very unassuming almost chintzy but don't let that detour you from going in! The feeling from when you step in the door is cozy and casual. There's a wonderful ""lunch counter"" if you will, that streams nearly the length of the restaurant and cute little tables set here and there. The waitress on this evening was very friendly and extremely accommodating with helping us decide on our meals. There was also great pop music playing from the 80s. The service was very prompt even as it started to fill up. We both really enjoyed our food, ""tuna burger w/wasabi mayo and steak & peppers w/ garlic dill mayo sandwiches served with a tasty side salad. Though the menu choices weren't vast, but the plates I saw being served looked quite tempting and smelled delicious! The menu also doesnt list the desserts they have to offer which should not be missed! The best part about the evening was that long after we finished our meals we weren't pressured to pay up and leave, we able to sit and talk comfortably. Pros: Food, Vibe, and Charm Cons: on the small side so it fills up quickly more

The Best! 3/5/2006

I just got back from NYC, and we went all over the place to eat. Mooncake Foods, was, by far, the best. The food was delicious, and it was so affordable. The summer rolls were light and tasted very healthy, in a good way. Both of my friends got the chicken, which came with the most delicious cilantro chili sauce. The sauce was so good that my male friend wanted to take some home. I got the steak kabobs with peanut sauce, which were big and juicy and done to perfection. The service was also wonderful and friendly, and made us feel at home. The only thing was that the restaurant was a bit small - but we got there right on time and didn't have to wait for a table. Whether you are a local or a visitor, this place is not to be missed. Pros: Food, Prices, Service Cons: Small more

Simple goodness 3/1/2006

I work nearby and I eat here at least once a week, if not more. It is very healthy yet cleverly delicious. You just have to try it to believe it! People who work there are always wonderful. In fact, I think I'm going to have to go there for lunch today. I really can't recommend just one dish because they're ALL good. It's pretty small and it gets packed during lunch time, so you have to go early or slightly late. If you get it to pick-up or deliever, you don't have to worry about that though. more

Yum Foods 2/23/2006

This place, although very small and lacks any kind of ambiance makes up for it with its food...Its simply Delicious...everything. I went there with my girlfriend, based on the previous reviews and was amazed. The food, and all the sauces it comes with are Just Great. Really no other words to describe it. The only thing thats better, is the price. you can fill your self up, pig out, and go away with a full wallet. I've been to some expensive places in the city, and the food there wasnt worth the money. I'd gladly pay more if this place raises its prices. Pros: Great Food, very cheap, quick service Cons: ambiance lacking more

My Favorite Place 10/5/2005

I noticed this place while sitting in traffic trying to get into the Holland tunnel. It is now my favorite place. Very small, understated, incredible incredible food. So simple and perfect. I always get the honey and soy chicken wing appetizer. Then its either the miso glazed salmon or anyone of the salads. The ginger tea is exceptional. Writing this makes me want to go there tomorrow. The staff is great. Always so pleasant. Pros: Food!, Service more

Best dumplings in town 7/27/2004

I tried the snow pea dumplings once and I just can't resist going back for them. The best dumplings in town. Chinatown can't compare. The menu is simple, food quality is superb, service is personable and price can't be beat! The only disadvantage is its undertone local diner ambience. So even though I love this place, I don't think it's a place for parents in town or dates... Pros: Food, Price more

the best!! 3/16/2004

i love, love, LOVE this place! the food is great, the service quick and the owners are so friendly!! everything on the menu is tasty, ive had it all!! do yourself a favor and go quickly! more

I just can't get enough of this place! 1/28/2004

I have now eaten at Mooncake Foods a few dozen times and I cannot come up with enough good things to say about it. I have tried almost everything on the menu, including the whipped taro, and I have never once been dissapointed. The food is exceptional; each dish has a unique twist, whether it is the spicy wasabi mayo on the tuna burger (which is fabulous) or a spicy lime vinagarette on a salad, Mooncakes does not shy away from trying something new. There are few restraunts that offer such a variety of unique and innovative flavors at such a low cost. Pros: inexpensive, great service, intimate more

Mooncakes 10/13/2003

Tasty, healthy, friendly, and reasonably priced. I eat there weekly for lunch and especially like their assortment of wonton noodle soups. Though you can purchase a wonton noodle soup just as tasty down the street in Chinatown for 1/2 the price, the ""No MSG"" policy makes it well worth it. Appetizers are reasonably priced while the rest of the menu is ""Soho"" priced. more

Whats on Watts? 9/17/2003

No prentension, no reservations needed, no ""scene"", no ""hipsters"", no attitudes, no overpriced food, no B&T, no Eurotrash, no socialites, no credit cards, and no loud music. Great food and great people at an affordable price make this Asian-influenced diner near the Holland Tunnel one of NY's best kept secrets. Pros: Healthy Food, Warm and Friendly , Cheap! Cons: Tiny more

little shop of wonders 9/16/2003

Mooncake does what many restaurants in the super-saturated Manhattan market fail to do -- stand out. The menu boasts flavorful, healthful food from a decent but not overwhelming selection. I consider myself a regular, and dinner for 2, including appetizers, drinks, and a dessert, barely rounds out at $30. The summer rolls remind me of the ones I've had at Vietnamese restaurants, minus Centre St. The honey-soy chicken wings are to die for. As for entrees, the ""plates"" are divine, (chicken, porkchop, & salmon) as is the lemongrass shrimp salad and Thai steak salad. Go ahead, explore -- there is nary a miss on this menu. I have not had any of the sandwiches, but I've heard good things about the new lobster w/ garlic butter. This Soho gem is definitely a place where one easily becomes a regular...even if they take residence in the Upper West Side. Pros: Healthy Asian food, Great value, Excellent service Cons: Tiny space more
