Oh what $300 million would do to bring this glorious old giant into a more current world. Not to change this grand place, but to preserve it for decades to come. Pros: activit...

Mohonk Mountain House 4/22/2006

Mohonk is a very special lakeside mountaintop retreat in the Hudson Valley. It is surrounded by some of the most spectacular hiking trails and scenery in the Valley. First built in 1869, it is an architectural marvel--all 251 rooms! It offers 85 miles of hiking trails, lake swimming, boating, tennis, golf, horseback riding, carriage rides, special theme weekends (chocolate lovers, mystery), spa services, and children's programs. Whew! Visiting Mohonk is like taking a few big steps back in time. The place just wants you to take it all in. Sit in one of the Adirondack rocking chairs and enjoy the view. Enjoy the cozy comfort of a blazing fire in one of their many parlors (some of the bedrooms even have fireplaces). Paddle a boat gently around the lake or take a leisurely carriage ride around the property. Take afternoon tea or enjoy a music concert. Don't want to relax? Then hike the trail up the Observation Tower atop the ridge for an extraordinary view of the Shawangunks and Hudson River Valley. Take your camera! Staying here isn't cheap and you must make a reservation. Not the kind of place you just show up. Consider buying a day pass and hiking the many trails--a great way to enjoy the property. more

Incredible resort in the middle of the mountains! 1/16/2006

Mohonk Mountain House is very old and very classic mountainy style, but it's still a lot of fun for the younger crowd because there's so much going on. The conference rooms are comfortable and provide all the facilities you'd need. The rooms are rustic - no TVs, but there are outlets and wireless connection (thank goodness) so it's not all bad. Or you could even rough it and leave your computer at home. There is boating and hiking and a really cool rock maze that is scary and dangerous and not your grandmother's hiking trip but a lot of fun. The food is good, I have no complaints. Make a trip to Mohonk and you won't regret it! more

Great food, lots of activities 9/18/2005

Mohonk Mountain House has much more than just hiking, swimming, climbing, ice skating, golf, etc. While you can pay a day rate and take part in any number of activities, and the hotel is incredible (although very expensive - includes all three meals), the restaurant is worth a trip in itself. The food is incredible, and definitely a dining experience. Try the mother's day brunch. Mohonk Mountain House also does weddings. more

Ultimate luxury - but you PAY 8/5/2005

This place is great - but it's also for people with far too much money (and more than me). It's an old Swiss Castle at the top of a mountain. The rooms are all luxurious, and many have fireplaces - which is great in the winter. The food is superb. However, if you want the Mohonk experience without the price, stay someplace in town and get a day pass to hike on the Mohonk grounds. Your wallet will thank you - unless you can afford it, in which case I'm sure it's worth every penny, if you're into the whole luxury travel thing. more
