Mobo Sushi

I'm really surprised at the negative reviews that some people have posted here. I guess everyone has their own tastes. For my husband and I, they are VERY GOOD. We've been coming here since we came to Santa Cruz. The ambiance is nice, the staff is friendly , and (best of all), the Sushi is EXCELLENT. Mobo's is tied with Takara for our favorite sushi. Mobo's has a fairly large menu of neo California style sushi, but is over-priced. After ordering a teishoku entree (set course complete w/ rice and miso soup), I wanted to walk out of the door when the waitress brought my rice when everyone else was having their appetizers, as if the rice was my appetizer! Rice is never served as an appetizer! It always complements the entree. \r \r It seems that the common theme among many sushi places in Santa Cruz is to serve an array of fancy sushi rolls with english names, comprised of non-Japanese ingredients such as mayo, cream cheese, and bbq sauce. However, I've come to believe that it is a sneaky way for a restaurant to use bad quality raw fish and cover it up with some mayo, imitation crab, and roasted sesame seeds. This has got to be the most overrated sushi place I have ever been too. Its not a good value, the service is horrible the sushi isnt even that good and the ambience sucks. This place attempts to be upscale and trendy but fails on all accounts Cons: Overrated more

Food is pretty good, but service is lousy. I've been to this place on numerous occasions and have had mixed service. My last trip had a wait of 30 minutes, but took over an hour to have us seated and a waiter at our table. Mobo Sushi is only OK in my book. Although they have a few creative fusion rolls if that's your thing. I'd much rather eat at Pink Godzilla where they have more fresh ingredients and good prices. Pros: decent food, parking Cons: overrated more

Really big place and almost always packed so you know they're doing something right. The fish is fresh, the rolls are very creative/nontraditional and the service is usually very good and very fast. The elegant matriarch of Mobo is always around, making sure everything is running smoothly, and they have a surprisingly wide selection of liquor (including delicious unfiltered sake by the bottle) plus two sushi stations running full bore. Limited outdoor seating in a sweet garden courtyard around back and a few private booths are a nice respite from the otherwise young and boisterous crowd. Music is hip and upbeat and photos of friends and silly patrons line the walls. I would go here anytime. Absolutely. more
