I, too, was duped by the advertising and environment. I thought it was a place for multiple breeders to sell their dogs. We got a gorgeous sweet eight-week-old lab from MO Puppy Expo last summer. It wasn't until we got her home that we noticed the cough, and she also broke out in a rash. It turned out that she had pneumonia and a staff infection. She also had a strange gait, which the vet suspects may have been the result of never being outside of a cage.
I am glad that I have a wonderful companion and family member, but I am sick that I supported this industry. Ms. Schindler made repeat calls to my house to ask about the dog. She acted very concerned and upset about the situation; however, after googling her name and learning about all the criticism she has received, I think she was more concerned about further chastisement than the dog.
The folks at MO Puppy Expo like to take pictures of their customers and dogs and hang them on the wall. I need to call and make sure mine isn't still up -- I am ashamed of my association with them. Heck, I may even join the protesters out there every Sunday.
I am now of the opinion that in Missouri, the state most notorious for puppy mills in the nation, it's best to just rescue. In fact, we just rescued a German Shepherd through a wonderful organization here in St. Louis.
Just google her name (Bonnie Sue Schindler) and USDA to learn more. You could also just google the name -- there's a plethora of information about her on the web.
Pros: I love my dog.
Cons: I unintentionally supported something that's immoral.
