if it's not the best sushi in Philly, look out Tokyo. 6/23/2007

On entering Miraku, we were delighted to see that one of the specials of the evening was ankimo, monk fish liver prepared with a tangle of minced fresh herbs and served cold, a highly exotic taste sensation in the U.S., and a good clue the chef knows and cares about Japanese cuisine. The clue proved true. Our tuna sashimi had the smoothness and fiberless texture of what could have been bluefin except that it lacked some of that deep, benthic essence, but at half the price. You couldn?t have found better yellowtail at the Tsukiji fish market. And the salmon made us wonder why people ever thought to cook it. Even the pickled ginger seemed like it might have been made fresh in house (without the pink dye); it had such a sharp, clean bite that it pleased our son who is not especially fond of this condiment. As for the ambience, the minimalist decor has the taste and cool craftsmanship that is the hallmark of Japanese aesthetic; the music was a mix of East and West, pleasing and at just the right volume. The wait staff kept our needs at the top of their list of things to do. In short, this side of Tokyo, Miraku is now among our favorite Japanese restaurants-?it?s a pity we live three hours away in Washington, D.C., itself no slouchy area for such fare. Pros: Six thumbs up (there were three of us). Cons: Would prefer not to carry wine to a restaurant, but it's literally a small(er) price to pay. more

Best Sushi Choice in City 1/8/2007

Moved from toronto (which, like nyc, apparently has much better sushi offerings than philly) and miraku meets the grade. Excellent quality sushi with surprising prices. Drawbacks include decent presentation and poor restaurant layout (small-ish restaurant).\r Best deals are their fantastic soups. Excellent service. Pros: Service, Quality Cons: Layout more

Finally, good affordable sushi BYO in Center City! 11/14/2006

Driving across the river to Cherry Hill for good, affordable sushi is no longer required. Other than the fact that the restaurant is located on the ground floor of a business building and only has one table large enough to seat 8-10 people, I love Miraku. Everybody, from the hostess to the sushi chef to the wait staff, is friendly and tries to be accomodating. \r \r Everything I tried was delicious; the sushi had fresh, generous fish and the rolls were tasty without being oversaturated with sauce. If you're not sure what to get, I would recommend the combination platter for two as that seems to be the best sushi value on the menu. I did not have a chance to try anything else on the menu, but the chicken teriyaki at the table next to ours smelled fantastic and the couple seemed very pleased with their non-sushi fare. \r \r Finally, the restaurant is BYOB, meaning you could pick up your own sake (or white wine) at the liquor store on 13th and Chestnut without having to shell out a small fortune for alcohol. Pros: Great sushi, friendly service staff, warm decor Cons: Unable to seat large parties more

Finally! 9/19/2006

...some good sushi in Center City! Like the reviewer before me, I moved here from NYC and have struggled in vain to fine high-quality, reasonably priced sushi. Miraku is it! Big rolls, fresh fish, creative maki options. I'm done settling for sub-par, overpriced sushi. more

Best Sushi in Philly 9/12/2006

I moved to Philadelphia two years ago from New York City. I have been on a quest to find a good Japanese Sushi Restaurant in CenterCity Philly. I have tried many and found them to be overpriced and /or poor quality and /or very poor presentation. Well I decided to try Miraku tonight since it is new. The service was wonderful, the resturant space was wonderful, the sushi combo dinner wonderful, the presentation artiful and wonderful and the prices are great! Bring your sake, plum wine or Japanese beer and have a great meal and enjoyable evening before this becomes the place that everyone goes to. Pros: Great open space and very comfortable Cons: Hidden away on Spruce (maybe that is not a con!) more
