The service was great and attentive. We went for a birthday and sat down in the tatami room. It was fun drinking sake and chatting. I was a bit disappointed to find out it wa...

great variety, great flavor, great price 1/20/2007

This is honestly the best sushi i've ever had. happy sumo has nothing on Mikado. It is nice fun, and relaxing environment. On thursday nights when there is a DJ from 9-10:30, it is really fun and throws a little edge into the scene. All of the servers are very nice, helpful and qualified. I crave this sushi. If, i lived closer i would seriously eat there everyday. Pros: the flavor is phenomenal. I feel like a queen when i eat there. food is quick Cons: parking is a little frustrating, but what place in salt lake isn't? more

BEST Japanese Food outside of Seattle WA! 10/30/2006

If you find yourself in the state of Utah, do yourself a favor and visit Mikado! The sushi bar is out of this world, but the private dining rooms offer a unique experience. Outstanding service and to-die-for stuffed mountain trout. more

Average at best. 10/17/2006

Mikado used to be THE japanese restaurant in town. My dad used to go there when he was a kid during WWII. The new ownership could have been a good or bad thing. Mikado during the last few years was pretty run down and showing its age. Both the decor, service, and food seemed a bit tired and not up to standard. New ownership broght an influx of cash and they capitalized on the ever popular sushi boom. The interior is much improved and stylish, the sushi bar very impressive. I wish the same could be said for the food.... The entrees were average and not worth the cost. I don't mind modern fusion, but it wasn't done well, and since the traditional stuff was pretty bad they lost serious points in my book. As for the sushi, this is one of the places that made me give up on finding good stuff here in town. They seem to have a few japanes guys, but they are either too young/not experienced, or they've been in the states too long and forgotten how to prepare for a discerning customer. You'd think they'd do their best w/ a japanese customer asking for Omakase...... more

Not good 7/28/2006

I go to Mikado once in a while because it's conveniently located in the downtown area, but I've noticed that their food and service were going downhill. The other day we went there for lunch and ordered some nigiri and ramen soup. Pros: convenient location Cons: food quality going downhill more

Good sushi 5/11/2006

I went to the Cottonwood Mikado, and had a great experience. The sushi was awesome! We also had tempura shrimp and the asian fries. It was all so good that we decided to eat there as often as possible. The service was okay, but I'm picky since I'm a server. I thought he could have been a little more personable, but he was still attentive. Overall, I would recommend this place. Everything that was supposed to be hot was hot, and what was supposed to be cold was cold. Liquor selection could stand some improvement, and it's a little overpriced, but all topshelf. The meal in general was a good value. Pros: affordable Cons: liquor selection more

Can't get your money's worth. 4/9/2006

Although the taste of the food was good, the prices were ridiculously high for the amount of food you get. I got Pacific Rim ribs for $19 which consisted of about 12 tiny ribs with little meat on them, four undercooked potato logs, and a bowl of rice. The noise was unbareable and I had to yell to have a conversation. The service was poor, we waited about 15 just to get change. Our server notified us that they were out of the sushi we ordered right as he brought out the other entrees and so we waited 20 more minutes to get another kind of sushi. Overall, I definitely do not reccommend the Mikado. Pros: Taste is good Cons: Too noisy , Poor service, Too expensive more

AWEFUL!! 3/6/2006

An hour and a half and fifty dollars later... we finally got our cold dry food. However, the manager did kindly take off 3 dollars from our fifty dollar check for it taking so long. How nice.... I will NEVER go back. I came directly back to work and told all 16 co workers how aweful it was too- I don't want anyone else to spend that much on cold gross food that you throw right out after 2 bites. Cons: BAD service, BAD food, EXPENSIVE more

My Favorite Sushi Spot 10/4/2005

I got my sushi initiation at Mikado many years ago and was hooked. I've since missed no opportunity to visit new sushi spots whereever I go but I've found none better than Mikado in Salt Lake City. Excellent selection, excellent quality and skilled, artful presentation by very engaging chefs. I generally visit during off hours and have never had anything but prompt and courteous service. I've never experienced anything other than the sushi bar. Prices are a little steep but if you avoid the exotic (which I never do) you could easily fill up for $20 or less. Pros: Selection, Quality, Preparation Cons: 2 hours away! more

Weak at best 10/2/2005

Sushi and other entrees are average in comparison to some of the sushi places in Park City. Ironically, it was also more expensive than Park City. Pros: Location Cons: Expensive, Service more

Total Disappointment 2/20/2005

The service was some of the worst I've seen. We were asked for drink orders without ever being given menus. We recieved our salads after 3 requests and after our entrees. Some entrees were never even put into the kitchen and only arrived after 5 requests and to top it all off, the food was cold, with small portions for the price. Very disappointing experience. Pros: Atmosphere, Takes Large Groups Cons: Poor Service, Overpriced, Mediocre Food more

Amazing changes 5/15/2004

If you haven't been to Mikado (downtown) for a while, you need to check it out! The place has undergone a major renovation, and it also includes a shake-up behind the scenes. The atmosphere is light, modern, clean, and comfortable. (I love the flatscreen monitors behind the bar!). And the changes in the kitchen and at the sushi bar are an answer to many prayers. The kitchen chef is a well-known chef brought in from San Francisco, and the new executive sushi chef, Trace, is a young local who has an impressive passion for what he does. This all means that Mikado has quickly moved from a mediocre Japanese restaurant to the best in the state! If you're a connoisseur of sushi you'll be impressed by the fact that Otoro, Uni, Anago, Ankimo, and other high-end fare is offered on almost every day! Service not so hot. Pros: Sushi, Atmosphere, Location Cons: , Prices more

So So 2/8/2004

This review is of the Mikado in Cottonwood. The ambience of the restaurant was nice, traditional but modern at the same time. We were seated promptly but the service after that was spotty at best. Our waitress was accurate and prompt but didn't smile much and it seemed like she would rather be somewhere else. As for the food, the sushi was fantastic but everything else was average at best. The tea and soup were luke warm. The rice was on the dry side and the main dishes were of small portions. Everything looked pretty but there wasn't much there. I probably wouldn't be so critical if the prices were more moderate. Bottom line is that I would recommend Mizuno Cottonwood if you want great sushi but bring your wallet. Pros: Sushi, Ambience Cons: , Small Portions, Service more

wow 12/12/2003

the place underwent a huge renovation bringing incredible amibience. they brought in a new chef from sfo and the menu is going to make the mikado a huge success. They have catapulted the restaurant to the elite level in salt lake. go check it out!!! Pros: service, food, valet parking on wken more

Best Sushi in Utah 5/16/2003

Good sushi is hard to find itself. In Utah its even harder. Mikado is some of the best sushi ive ever had and the chef is amazing. I would reccomend it to anyone, even if they dont like sushi. Try the volcano roll. Pros: Chef more

not worth the wait 4/8/2003

Based on service, starving is a better option than eating there. It took them 45 minutes just to get our drink order. It went down hill from there. Pros: food was great Cons: service, hospitality, attention more

service??? 4/4/2003

The food is pretty good; however, if you go during lunch plan on waiting. Not to be seated, but to be served. They typically run very short staffed on sushi chefs. Also, no more 1/2 price rolls at lunch...but they don't tell you....just put the squeeze on you when you get the bill. My waiter charged me 15% for my tip for a party of two. Didn't give me an option whether or not to pay. Complaint letters yield responses from the owner though. I wish the front line staff was aas oriented on customer service as the owner... Pros: atmosphere, taste Cons: service more

best sushi in town my friends 2/1/2003

greatest sushi in salt lake. totally worth any wait. great bar downstairs. Pros: great food, nice atmosphere, right downtown Cons: long wait more

High Quality Meal 1/14/2003

I am from NY, and have had sushi from a lot of places we have in NY. My family was in SLC for a convention and found this place, we took 8 people with us. The service was prompt, sushi was excellent, and the others who didn't want sushi, and got the Shrimp Tempura thought it was ABSOLUTELY fabulous! In NY, prices are cheaper, but quality doesn't have a price. Mikado was an excellent choice, and I recommend it highly! Pros: Fast Service, Excellent Selection Cons: Tables Are Tiny, Price a Little High more

Hit or Miss 10/23/2002

Mikado, like all sushi I have had in Utah is Hit or Miss. The first time we went there it was fantastic! We sat at the bar and my husband is half Asian so I guess we got the good stuff. The second time we had a tatami room and the sushi was not great. The ebi we got was rubbery and old, so we sent it back. They sent out a maguro to replace it and the rice had no vinegar whatsoever. I would recommend the bar, just so they know they can't stick you with the bad stuff. Pros: Service, Ambiance Cons: Hit or Miss Sushi more

good quality, bad value 8/2/2002

Yes, the sushi is very good, and the fish is very fresh, but it's SO expensive. there are better valued sushi spots with the same high quality. I only eat here when they have their deals, like all you can eat or half price lunch rolls. I will commend them for having those! The private rooms are nice for a romantic date. Pros: quality, freshness, romantic Cons: expense more
