Great place, great hot plates, okay sushi 1/12/2012

Went to lunch here today. the service was impecabble from the greeting to the server to the good bye. Lovely atmosphere and the gyoza were divine! The plating of the entrees and sushi are beautiful. My only small complaint is that the beautifully presented sushi rolls are simply too big to eat properly. a piece of sushi roll should be a one bite gig. Taking these in as one bite is just too much. it's too difficult to savor the delicious flavors of all the components that make up such a delicious sounding roll. more

Best Place Ever!! 7/8/2009

This is such a fun place if you are looking for a night out with your friends! Our favorite servers keep us coming back, and our weekly visits are always a great time! Monday and Tuesday nights are half-price rolls, and Thursday is $5.00 sake night! Ever since this restaurant is under new management, it just keeps getting better! We love Cottonwood Mikado's atmosphere and the friendly and efficient staff! The sushi is so fresh and is the best in town. Its our favorite!! Pros: Great atmosphere! more

Good sushi - half price menu 5/24/2009

I went on 5/21/09 and experienced friendly staff, interesting architecture/decor and good sushi. We ordered a few items off of the half price sushi menu (available after 8 PM, I think) and enjoyed all of it. The citrus prawns were fantastic! Pros: Half price sushi menu Cons: Can't think of one more

N aked fish is lacking food quality 5/7/2009

The service was great and attentive. We went for a birthday and sat down in the tatami room. It was fun drinking sake and chatting. I was a bit disappointed to find out it was no longer Mikado or run by Mikado. The food was not as good as it once was. My Chicken Yakisoba had cilantro in it. A lot of it. I didn't know Japanese food had cilantro in it. Pros: In the old Mikado space. Cons: Not run or owned by Mikado. more

Good food 4/23/2009

The patio is cozy with the stream behind it. The service and food are great. I often get the Chepitos roll and the Pacific rim ribs. The staff is friendly and attentive. I will be back. Pros: Price, service. more

This restaurant is no longer a Mikado Restauant 3/6/2009

There is a new restauant located in the Mikado. It is called N aked Fish Japanese Bistro. I haven't tried it yet. But, I can't wait! more

Bad service...Not worth your time and money. 1/28/2009

....If you're thinking about wasting gas to drive all the way downtown for this lousy place....well... please.... don't! First and far most, the service is the worst. For example, the servers will talk back to you and if you plan to make a complaint to the manager, they won't even give a dam. Plus... the workers don't do their job because they're to busy hanging out in the back texting and gossiping. Secondly, the wait for everything is forever (food, drinks, refills, etc)... For example, it took nearly an hour before the food was brought to my table (Note to readers: this was a tuesday night. I repeat... TUESDAY for gosh sake!) like seriously? I should have threw a plate at my servers head.... And finally, the food was not fresh nor was the taste that great. You can most definitely find better sushi places around Utah that doesn't taste like plastic (exaggeration). Aha.... But hey, if you have plenty of time on your hands and yearning to eat plastic food then I would reccommend this lousy place. =] Pros: ......?..... Cons: Owner don't know how to run his business.... more

Great Atmosphere and Great Sushi 12/11/2008

This was a great find. It's tucked away n the avenues of of Salt Lake, and is a great place for an adventuresome meal. The first thing that I liked was the Japanese style seating, with the futons and low tables. It made for a great atmosphere. The tempura was the best I""ve ever had, and the sushi rolls were incredible. A great find, and great for dates! Pros: Atmosphere, food, service Cons: A bit pricy more

Yummy! 9/11/2008

I love the atmosphere here. I do not know what people are talking about with the mean service. Our service was awesome, funny, friendly... It was a great experience. And they knew about each roll and the other dishes. For those who complain about parking, it is downtown, I am not sure what they are expecting. Pros: Atmosphere, food, big groups friendly Cons: No discount nights more

Sushi's not worth it's price and bad customer service is not worth your money!!!!!!! 9/6/2008

You call this food?! You mean dog food?! Pros: Lucky location (nothing to do with workers) Cons: Customer service, chefs, managers, employees, food, price more

TERRIBLE SERVICE, WORST FOOD, AND RUDE SERVERS 9/5/2008

Mikado gives the WORST SERVICE I've ever had in my life. Lazy service and VERY RUDE servers. They don't care about customer service at all! For example, the dumb waitress did not wrote down my order and it turns out that she messes up my order afterwards. Not only that, she argued with me and said very rude things like ""well... I can take that off your order, but it only costs like 15 bucks so..."" Also, it took them an hour to get my group seated, half hour to get our drinks, and a full ""never ending story"" before our food was brought to the table. [Note: It was a slow wednesday night when I went. Can they not handle that?] In conclusion, Mikado gives bad customer service, lazy rude uneducated servers, and the food was not that great at all. Pros: Nothing Cons: Bad customer service, rude & uneducated servers, cheap & nasty food. more

Best Sushi in Utah, No Questions! 7/30/2008

I have eaten sushi all over Utah and Mikado always comes out number one. My husband and I go there at least once or twice a month. The sushi is ALWAYS fresh, the rolls are good-sized, and we have never gotten a roll we didn't like. Some people have said their rolls are expensive but I haven't thought this at all. Their rolls may be a dollar or two more than some places but they are literally almost twice the size so in actuality I have found them to be less expensive. Sometimes the service is lacking, but overall I am ADDICTED to this place and I have yet to find any place that does sushi as well as they do. If you love sushi, the only place in Utah I would recommend that I have been is Mikado. Pros: Amazing sushi, good atmosphere Cons: Sometimes the service isn't that great more

Great saturday evening experience 3/22/2008

We had a great meal at Mikado this month. A varied menu, excellent sake and some very creative and unusual sushi creations. Definitely a new favourite for me. more

Service sometimes lacking, food always makes up for it 1/25/2008

My husband and I often frequent mikado downtown. They used to have discount sushi days with a customer card that you sign up for but it has recently been stopped. I live for the connect roll. The miso soup is so-so but my husband really likes the salad and teriyaki chicken although the portion size constantly changes with the plating, which can be disappointing. It's a little over priced so we don't go as often as we'd like but it's not enough to keep us away. Be aware of conventions in town, the place can quickly become packed as it is across the street from the convention center. Pros: tasty sushi Cons: parking, crude talk at sushi bar when rest. is near empty more

Nice change of atmosphere. 12/7/2007

I have been to some of the nicer sushi houses here in Utah. As far north as Logan and as south of Provo. I have my favorites. This might be one that is up and coming on my list. We were in the area of Fort Union and we were in the mood for sushi. So we used a feature on my GPS unit to find this place. We arrived right as the luch rush was ending (always a good time to show up), and were greated promptly. A bit of a wait but very friendly host small taked with us until a table was ready. I would've prefered to sit at the bar but it was that first time for someone in our party. After looking over the menu I was very impressed with their specialty rolls. A bit more expensive then I would've like for lunch but I'm a push over for sushi. I ordered the lunch special which consisted of a sushi roll (california roll I think), shrimp tempura and veggie tempura, two peices of sushimi, fruit (which was a nice treat to off set the sushi), and my favorite about 5 pieces of sliced spicy tuna. All served with a variity of sauces on the side, that the server kindly described and suggested what to use with what (very nice A+). My mom who what out with us and had sushi for the first itme ever ordered there Box lunch. Very good choice for a first timer. Everything came as it stated, in a box! She though it was great. Large portion of sticky rice, shrimp and veggie tempura, a california roll cut into 5 pieces, and a terryaki salmon with baby carrots and sweet pea pods. It was a great time had by all. Because of the timing the crow was just leaving so it wasn't too crazy or loud. I will deffinatley consider coming again if I'm in the area and I'm in the mood for sushi. Pros: Nice New Specialty Sushi Rolls Cons: A bit pricey but to be expected with sushi more

Great service, excellent sushi 12/2/2007

We've been to most of the Sushi places in SLC and this ranks among the best. The sushi, particularly the specialty rolls, is exceptional. We've been many times and never once had ""slimy"" sushi or seen any uncleanliness referred to by other reviewers. The prices are somewhat high, but what sushi place doesn't have high prices? Pros: great sushi, great service Cons: somewhat high price more

Don't understand the hype. 11/21/2007

My friends and family frequents this restaurant and raves about how great it is. I finally decided to take my friends up on the offer and joined them last night. The hostess kindly greeted us and our waitor was great - I just wish the sushi would have been. I was not impressed at all!! The seaweed was slimy. The rolls fell apart when you barely touched them with your chopsticks and every roll we ordered - at least 5 different kinds - all had the same bland, heavy sauce poured over the top of them. At least I had my Sapporo and the company of good friends to enjoy! Can you tell the highlight was not the sushi!?!?! I have no desire to return. Pros: Service and Atmosphere Cons: sushi more

Love their Half-Price Rolls! 6/25/2007

My friends and I LOVE this place. We typically go on Mondays or Tuesday for the half price sushi rolls/appetizers. We sit at the sushi bar and have great conversations with the sushi chefs. Don't know if I'd come to Mikado for a full-price meal, but the half-price rolls are FABULOUS! I highly recommend the Connect Roll and the Red Dragon. Pros: Very friendly staff and chefs Cons: Pricey if it's full priced more

Drastically going downhill 4/3/2007

We have been going to Mikado in Cottonwood for a couple of years. The service has always been iffy at best but the sushi was generally pretty fresh and good. However, the last 5-6 times that we have been there in the last six months, everything has gone downhill - service and quality. Pros: Clean and nice ambience Cons: Service and food are way below what you should expect from the price. more

SLOW Service, okay food 1/28/2007

We went to Mikado for Saturday lunch (1/27/07). We were promptly sitted in the ""basement"" dining section and I thought it was a nice atmosphere, different than other restaurants I've been in. I asked the server a question and he let me know that this was his first shift so he didn't know a lot. That should have been my first clue that there would be trouble. There were no other servers assisting or training him in this section and they were very busy as a retailer convention was in town. We ordered 5 different specialty sushi rolls, emimame (soy bean appetizer), and their Asian Fries. The first 2 rolls arrived fast and so we thought this was going to be our sushi restaurant that we would frequent from now on. The rolls were good, nothing excellent though. The Asian Fries were way over-priced for the amount that you got. For around $5.00, you got 4 Asian skinny fries about 10"" long. For that price, I would have expected double the amount. Then the nightmare began ... we waited literally one full hour and our other 3 sushi rolls still had not arrived. I order all my rolls with no avocado and I heard the server deliver a ""no avocado"" roll to the table next to me. After the table ate it, they told the server that they ate something they didn't order! Guess that was ours! Our water glasses were empty during this hour and I finally had to ask for water. My husband almost had us walk out. The server explained to us that the kitchen was backed up. After 1 hour, 2 rolls were delivered. 1 1/2 hrs later, we received the final roll however it wasn't the one we ordered. We were so put out, we just ate it and called it good. The waiter then told us that he would try to get us a discount but when he came back he told us that he wasn't able to do so. A table with Asian visitors next to us also complained that they had waited 1 hour to receive Udon soup! The service was horrendous, sushi was average at best, and we'll not be returning. If you go, plan on paying for 2 hr parking. Pros: ""basement"" dining atmosphere was nice and cozy Cons: VERY slow service, no water refills, SLC downtown parking more
