When my husband and I called Midland Heating and Air regarding our unit freezing up, they sent a tech out immediately. When the Tech arrived he went straight up stairs to the the air-handler. Not 2 minutes after being up there he states "oh no". He then comes down and said we have mold in the air handler and that we need a whole new unit. He starts to show us the units and recommends that we get a $9000 unit for a house that is only 1200sq. He talks to us and explains that they have a finance program and that no matter what our financial history is we will qualify for a loan. He then tells us that he is going to waive the service fee because we are buying a whole new unit, and that if we decided not to we will have to pay his sales manager who was on the way out to do all the paper work so that our unit could be installed. When the Sales manager arrived we found to our disappointment that financing was not an option. I explained to the Sales Manager that we were told we would have to pay a service call fee, and he then reported, "you know what, I will write this up as an estimate, so you don't owe anything.' We thanked him graciously at the same time worried about what we were going to do! With in 10 mins of him leaving we received a call from the service tech stating we did not pay him and he wanted me to give him my credit card information. He then charged us $79.00 for absolutely nothing! A week has went by and we have been in the cold since. Unsure of what to do a friend recommend I call Comfort Services for a second opinion. The came out almost immediately, the service tech took a look at the outside unit first and explained that the Defrost Board was bad and needed to be replaced, I then mentioned that the Tech from Midlands stated we had mold and needed a whole new unit. Upon his inspection he stated it was dirt... When I asked if he was sure, he asked if the Tech had tested it for mold or just told us. I explained that he just told us. Putting 2 and 2 together it was easy to realize that Midland Air was only trying to sell a unit by taking advantage of those that don't understand. In the end, we do have heat and air which cost us $114 with Comfort Services! I hope and pray that no one else slips into the same trap that we almost fell into.
