Mel's Country Cafe

This is a little hole in the wall diner that is in Tomball. They are located off of the beaten path near 2978 and Kuykendahl Huffsmith. They have excellent hamburgers and offer a daily special of a specialty like chicken and dumplings. They will cook your hamburger to order and serve it with a huge order of crispy fries. If you can polish off on of their monster size burgers, they will write your name on their wall of fame. The prices and low and the food is excellent. more

I remember being impressed the very first time I ate a Mel's Country Cafe. The food was great, the prices were very reasonable, and the atmosphere was laid back. The only complaint I have is the occassionaly slow service. The reason for the slow service seems to be (in my opinion) the ratio of servers to diners. This place is often packed out, and you see servers running all over the place trying to keep up. Anyway, enough with the complaining, the food here is great. They've already increased the size of the establishment to accomodate the increasing number of guests. Just a side note...there is a burger called the Mega-Mel Burger that has like, a pound of beef, a pound of bacon, a bucket of mayo and cheese, etc. It's HUGE. Anyway, you can order it for $15, but if you eat the entire thing in something like 2 hours, the meal is on the house, and you get your name included on Mel's Wall of Fame. Good luck... more

Mel's Country Cafe has the best hamburgers of any hamburger restaurant I've been to. They are loose meat style hamburgers. They also have hamburgers of various sizes to fit any appetite. I usually get the 1 1/2lb Mel Jr which has about 1/2lb of bacon and a quarter pound of cheese. This behemouth is enough for me and I eat quite a bit. This burger is around $7. They also have the "Big Mel" which is about 3lbs of meat and a whole pound of bacon. If you eat this burger in less than 3 hours you get your name on the wall (and some Tums!) Their onion rings are also some of the best I've ever had. You must go during off peak times because Mel's almost always has a wait. Carry-out works great too when they're real busy (which is almost always). On Friday they also have all you can eat fried catfish. more

Mel's is always packed, be there early or be prepared to wait. The food is great and the price is good too! They have good home-cooking type foods. Hamburgers are awesome too. It is a place with personality too. One of the hole-in-the wall family type dining experiences. more
