Editorial review from Citysearch 5/3/2013

Mellie salon offers a fun, relaxing yet upscale environment and fantastic styling, cuts and advice! I have been getting my cut here for 5 years and I would not use anyone else.\r \r Melanie's talent goes beyond cuts and daily styles, although these talents are second to none. She and the stylists from Mellie salon created fabulous styles and updos for myself, 6 bridesmaids, 2 Jr bridesmaids and a flower girl. They created styles that showed off individual personalities and still maintained an overall look with magnificent ease. They all listened to each girl's requests creating styles that were personal and gorgeous! All the while the room was full of laughter, dancing and music!\r \r I highly recommend Mellie for regular hair cuts, highlights and grand events alike. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 2/14/2013

Man does Mellie know hair. She is one very talented gal!\r \r I went prematurely gray at the age of 16 and have been coloring my hair for the past 15 years. I ve moved cities twice in the past 5 years (to DC and back to Boston recently) and have had some seriously traumatic hair experiences in trying to find the right colorist.\r \r With that said, I came back to Boston about two months ago, and went back to my old colorist. He dyed my roots too dark, didn t pull the color through my entire head so I looked like a calico kitten. Then to fix the botched dye job (which was also done poorly) I was charged $400. Horrific.\r \r I found Mellie Salon through a combo of Yahoo/Citysearch/YELP, and figured going to Mellie was worth a shot. She listened to my concerns, and was upfront about both the price and look of what she was going to do to fix my motley colored head. She did a beautiful job on the color, and after the color, she cut my hair, and sometimes getting the cut is scarier than the color, because I think it much harder to fix if done wrong. Mellie cut the hair the best it s ever been cut, she s a master...I love it! She is funny, honest, professional, and excellent at her job.\r \r My highlights, single process, and a glaze, and haircut + style cost $265 which I thought would be an impossibility in the Boston area...\r Love this salon and found my new hair home! more

Best Color and Cut Around 11/1/2012

I went to Mellie's for my annual fall tune up and put my hands entirely of her new colorist/hair stylist, Lindsay. Lindsay and Mellie talked me out of the rut I have been in for twenty years, cutting to the curl. (For years, I've spent hours trapped in the bathroom with product trying to straighten very wavy hair with little success.) more

Downtown Styling in the Burbs 4/17/2012

I went to Mellie's to get my hair cut and colored, didn't have any idea what needed to be done, just knew it was a mess. Thankfully, I went to right place. I had a personal consultation with Mellie, the owner of the salon about what I was looking for, and she brought over a new stylist Kristin to help me attain that goal. The hair cut was stunning, they were able to keep it long but it is incredibly stylish and low maintenance, something I didn't even know was possible. And the color? Kristin suggested using low lights and highlighs, and though I was nervous at first, they took years off my age, are very flattering to my skin tone, and I finally feel like I belong in 2012. Thanks Mellie and Kristin!!!! more

SO HAPPY TO HAVE FOUND YOU! 3/22/2012

FABULOUS COLOR -- Katelyn was my colorist (and new BFF) the salon was inviting and had the cutest little greeter (an adorable dog) This salon is BIG CITY quality at a SUBURB value. Loved the service, loved the people and love my hair! Thank you Katelyn! I See you in 5 to 6 weeks! more

Excellent service! 3/10/2012

This place is amazing, and a fantastic value. I decided to try this place after 10 years of going to my previous salon. Sometimes I left there in tears but everyone was so nice and familiar, I chalked it up to my difficult hair and accepted my fate as someone who could not have great hair. ...until I met Janine. She took the time to understand my hair's unique fine mess of one third straight, one third wavy, and one third ringlets of curls. She asked how I wear it and gave me two different options that would work. I honestly had no idea my hair could look this good. I had no idea my face could look this could with great hair. I already made an appointment to go back. I'm sold. more

""Best of Boston"" Hell Yeah! 9/5/2011

Wow, Superb! 2/12/2011

A close friend of mine gave me a birthday gift certificate to Mellie and I used it toward a hair cut + style last weekend. I had an incredibly pleasant experience from the moment I was greeted by the front desk staff (James?) The salon is absolutely simple, with nice, yet very beautiful decorations and ambiance. I would not have imagined a hip, cool place like this existed in the suburds. What a treat! The haircut with Kerry was excellent and I truly enjoyed the entire experience. She was professional, sweet, obviously highly skilled, and polite. I highly recommend Mellie Salon if you are looking for a special place for hair styling with a positive vibe. more

Spectacular Hairstyle 2/4/2011

I have now been to Mellie Salon twice, first time was for a Brazilian Blowout (still looks awesome after 2 months), the second was just a few days ago. Both visits were phenomenal! The salon is bright, clean and uncluttered, the staff are friendly, professional and helpful, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The first time I sat down my stylist named Jennifer did my Brazilian Blowout in about 1 hour and did a great job. I gotton sooo many compliments. more

BAD STYLE! OVERPRICED! SNUBBY!! 2/2/2011

i m suprised to see any good reviews about this place!! it s absolutly horrible!! HORRIBLEEE ! i would have gotten better hair cut at supercuts ! im not kidding she gave me little girl hair cut with no style , no layers, she was done in 10 min, she started to blow dry another 5 min. my hair looked sooo much better BEFORE i went to mellies, she ruined my hair style i had, when she finished blow drying my hair looked FRIZZY... !! i can tell she gets easily annoyed with her clients, she has bad attitude! more

Janine is the Best! 11/8/2010

I absolutely love love love my new hair cut. Janine sat me down and consulted me about my overuse of gel (LOL! ) and then asked me what I wanted. Since she cut my friends hair I told her I trusted her to make my hair beautiful, but I did want to keep some of the length. Janine was nothing short of amazing. She cut my hair beautifully. I walked out of their feeling like a new woman. The best layered hair cut I have had in years. She is such a sweet person and very real. I had a wonderful experience. I will continue to go back to see Janine. THANK YOU! and Thanks Suzanne for the excellent referral. more

Just Love It! 11/1/2010

What a great experience! I went to this salon for the first time a few weeks ago, and I have to say I walked out feeling like a million bucks! Jennifer did my color, and she was so helpful in telling me what my options are. I have been coloring my hair black for ages, and wanted to change to a more natural color. She advised me to do it gradually, and I must say the result is simply beautiful. She colored my roots a deep dark brown that blends in perfectly with the rest of the hair, and gradually will keep coloring my hair like that as it grows, until I reach the lighter brown I am dreaming of. I must say, I am very very impressed with the results. She really knows what she's doing! My original color was sort of a drab, because the person who previously colored it didn't really know how to blend a nice color. I told Jennifer what I wanted and it looks better than ever, and boy, did she gave me THE BEST COLOR I have ever had, EVER. I look totally different now, and I really feel like one of those models from the cover of a magazine. She did a great great job overall, and she changed my look completely. I honestly couldn't imagine my color would be so gorgeous, as I have had plenty of disappointing experiences in the past. Not this time though. She is REALLY good at this, I I cannot imagine going anywhere else from know on. This visit to Mellie Hair Salon really made my day!!! more

Great Salon/Great Stylists 9/21/2010

I just wanted to say I am a little difficult to please, and I have never been this pleased with my hair. I've tried several salon over the years, I had a great salon in Phoenix for a few years, but since relocating to Boston for work, I've been going to Mellie Hair Salon for about 2 years now, and I have always really loved my hair. I usually go to Janine, but I have also gone to Catherine, and both are great. The salon is comfortable, and the staff are all very friendly. This salon really is a hidden jewel tucked into East Milton Square. more

Awful Salon 9/14/2010

After several years of getting my hair cut, colored and styled at a high-end Newbury Street hair salon, I decided to try a local place near my home and see if I could capture the same quality hair styling I was used to. I checked various salons and came across Mellie Hair Salon. The salon website boasts that the salon is ""high-end"" and utilizes ""the latest, cutting-edge"" techniques. I called and spoke with the owner, Melanie. I explained to her I needed color, cut and blow-dry. I informed hair that my hair is long and curly and that I needed a stylist that was a pro at using a hair dryer, as the style I like is sleek and straight. She booked me with Janine. The day arrived for my appointment and I was greeted at the front door by Melanie, who was dressed in frumpy clothes and a 80s bob hair style. Immediately I was disappointed with Melanie's look, because obviously as the owner of a salon that is supposedly high-end and trendy she was certainly not any of these things. Nevertheless, I was promptly escorted to a chair and I was introduced to Janine and my consultation began. I took one look at Janine and realized her arms were very skinny and she was very petite, and I had doubts about whether or not she really was competent enough to blow-dry my hair. But I've had my hair fabulously blow-dried by petite women with skinny arms in the past so maybe it would be ok. I explained to Janine that I wanted to match my old color and that I needed to cover my grey. She said she liked it but did I consider low-lights. I said no, I was looking to keep the same color. She insisted that they would look nice and so after some back and forth I said I'd give it a try. During the consult she also tried to sell me the Brazilian blow-out, which apparently is a big money maker for the salon. I passed. The appointment progressed, the color was completed and it did not look that bad wet. Then Janine started my blow-dry. I had high hopes for the blow-out because she in fact separated my hair into parts which was a signal that she may know what she was doing. Unfortunately Janine got tired half-way through my blow-dry and after 20 minutes she said she was done. I knew my hair takes at least 30-40 minutes from start to finish to blow-dry so I was skeptical. I touched my hair and it was still wet. I informed her of this and I also suggested she try the flat iron, if that would help her complete the job. She blew-dry a bit more but by now she was getting annoyed with me. Imagine! A hairstylist annoyed because a customer pointed out that she did a half-a** job. She tried the flat iron and further showed her incompetence by not handing the flat-iron correctly and not showing any sign of technique or experience with it. I had enough of amateur hour and said I'll go pay now. The amount I paid for this haircut exceeded what I normally payed on Newbury Street by about $20. The color was mediocre and when I took a look at my roots I found many grey hairs still not completely covered with the new color. The moral of the story: there is a reason Newbury Street is where all the experienced, edgy and high-end salons are located. Mellie Hair Salon said it was this type of salon; but in the end it was a rinky-dink, no talent, no style salon that obviously caters to ""old lady hair."" The vibe in the salon lacked energy and was dull. Janine showed no class when I voiced my concerns after the blow-out and was incompetent. I would not recommend this salon. more

Excellent Salon 2/26/2010

This salon took me by surprise. I had an appointment based on my mother's recommendation, and I'm happy I did. Kate cut my hair and the cut is really great. Also, the price was 20% less than what I was paying in Providence. The salon is nice and modern, and it's obvious the staff is well-trained and they're all very professional. No tatoos or crazy looks, just mature pros doing their thing with fun music playing. All in all, and superior experience. I found my new salon Pros: Excellent Value, talented hairdressers more

Pros: talented, young, hip Cons: parking more

Went here for the first time last week and have finally found ""the one!""
