Unique! Good! Fun! 5/23/2010

We were visiting from California and heard about McMenamins. We passed by this one so we dropped in for a light dinner. Great place! Old school turned restaurant/pub/theater/gathering place. We settled into an old classroom turned bar. I had a good raspberry beer and we ordered several appetizers which were all very tasty. I was surprised how good the food was, better than your typical pub food! Fun to explore the hallways, the art on the walls and the different areas of the school-turned-restaurant/brewery. Pros: Big place, with intimate areas more

Funky Fun 7/15/2002

We loved staying at this one of a kind hotel on our recent visit to Portland. Each room is in a converted classroom and all are spacious and uniquely decorated. My husband loved examining all the original art, much of it inspired by the schools long history in the community. It would be perfect for a school reunion! Dinner and breakfast were both delicious. Breakfast was included, as was entry to a movie. Our one disappointment was that Oregon liquor laws prevented our 12 year old son from watching a film in the evening, since drinks and pizza are served in the theater. Pros: Unique, Free Parking more

Editorial
  • Old School Days
The 82-year-old structure has been beautifully transformed from school-about-to-be-razed to an entertainment mecca in the heart of Northeast Portland. Chalkboards and cloakrooms are still in place, as are waterfountians, situated at child level.

    The Food
The Courtyard Restaurant serves typical McMenamins fare, plus a whole lot more. There's a blackened chicken-breast sandwich, portobello mushroom ravioli, an ale-marinated steak sandwich, pizza, appetizers and more. The restaurant overlooks the courtyard, which features a flower garden, lots of outdoor seating, and a huge adobe fireplace--great to gather 'round when it's cold.

    More Than Food
The old auditorium now houses a 300-seat movie theater, where you can sip McMenamins beer and munch popcorn and pizza while you take in a flick for a buck. Minors are allowed in the theater for early showings and matinees only.
