I stayed at Maverick House for about 36 hours until I finally left in disgust... I had heard before I was officially living there that there was bed bugs and people were catching ...

Here's some facts 7/12/2011

I actually stayed at the Maverick House for more than 36 hours and was actually there and experienced the scabies ""outbreak""- Here's what really happened. I guess some dude had been admitted into treatment and about a week later, broke out in scabies and had exposed his roommates to it. It was two dudes that had it and they left until they could get medical clearance, and in fact had come back while I was still at Maverick House. Ed, the program manager came and told all of us that there had been exposure to scabies, what it was, what the symptoms were, how to get it from someone else, and what the timeframe was for it. Then the next day, EVERYONE had to go to Ed's office and sign for some medicated preventive cream that maverick had gotten for us. And by the way, it was everyone that got the cream, there was staff members in line for the cream with us. And that was the ""huge"" outbreak that Donny said he heard about. I will say that yeah, some of the guys that were there while I was there did get bit by bed bugs, but when you get admitted into maverick they have you sign a document that tells you from day one that Maricopa county has had an outbreak of them, and that maverick's gonna put your stuff in a shed for 24 hours at something like 180 degress. I never got bit, I guess it is one room over in the men's hallway cause while I was there, staff was always having those guys take everything out of their room and stick it in the shed while they had a guy spray the room. While you are there you do have to do chores and the staff goes around and makes sure that things are getting done. Is the building old? Yeah it is, and they were getting the roof repaired while I was there. But does the program work? YES...look, it's not the ritz and its rehab, its not gonna be disneyland. I'm sure that I had lots of reasons and excuses in my head my first 36-48 hours in maverick for why I wanted to leave treatment like Donny did too. The difference is I stuck it out and that god that I did. maverick saved my life..and BTW the food does not suck! I gained 15 pounds while I was there...Maybe the weekend that Donny was in treatment the menu wasn't to his taste- If you don't believe me, go check out Maverick House. You won't regret recovery...EVER. more

Disgusting Dirty The Staff Should be Ashamed! 6/19/2011

I stayed at Maverick House for about 36 hours until I finally left in disgust... I had heard before I was officially living there that there was bed bugs and people were catching staff infection. The peer support team kept reassuring me that it wasn't that bad. So i decided to try it out. When i finally got in. They take your clothes and put it in a big metal container outside called a ""hot box"" This supposedly kills and bed bugs that are on your clothes. If you have them. I was told to buy rubber swimming shoes before i came in because there was a chance i could catch something in the shower. So i did that. When i got to my room the bed had a plastic liner over and the guy one bed over from me had caught staff infection from another person in the facility. He said i could only catch it if i touch the puss. I said okay i can handle this. I asked about the bed bugs and another guy in our room said he gets bit a few times every night but he said ""he's gotten use to it"". The other guy said he use to get bit up a lot until he took toilet paper and plugged a hole in the wall. I was grossed out by this time then i started to hear about people catching scabies and some people living there had hepatitis C. Who knows i bet some people had HIV. There were a lot of people that used needles that lived there. When i went to the bathroom I used toilet paper to turn on the sink, lock the door, flush the toilet... etc. The week before i entered the facility scabies was spreading from person to person. And everyone was given a cream to rub on there body. to prevent from catching it and if they had it, the cream would make it go away. One guy gave me a tour and he told me not to take a shower in that bathroom because the water drains so slow that it start to feel up the bath tub and it will rise up to your ankle's. Oh and buy the way the bathrooms were cleaned everyday by recovering drug addicts and the place still looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a week. The guy i told u had staff infection was graduating the next day. He told me in the 28 days he lived there 15 people left either because the facility was to disgusting to live in or they were hospitalized by catching something they had caught there. You have to attend meeting everyday, These are actually pretty good and they do have a good program there. Except i was assigned to the seat next to the guy that started the scabies out-break a weak earlier. The city of Glendale should be ashamed to let such a dirty facility exist on 48th ave and Glendale Blvd. oh and by the way if the program doesn't work. about 200 feet away there is a smoke shop. ( no joke, a smoke shop, I couldn't believe it when i left) Business must be booming. I would recommend if you don't mind being in this type of environment the go ahead and give the maverick house a shot. If you like to be clean like me then i would strongly advise not to go here. If i was allowed to bring my phone in i would have video taped it all and posted it on youtube. I can't believe its legal what they are doing. They only thing i can say positive about this is the meetings and the staff really do care and they want to help you. Other then that this place stinks and the food sucks, and who knows who cleaned the tray's and cups that day. Good luck I really hope this helps someone see what i saw when i stayed there. My name is Donny And i stayed they 6/17/2011 ask around people know me. I'm not hiding anything more
