Best

This place is a piece of MN history. Great little neighborhood bar. The menu couldn't be simpler, and everything on it is worth trying. Pros: All of it Cons: Not the world...

Worst

BEST JUICY LUCY 8/20/2008

My boyfriend and I ate at Matt's first to try their ""JUICY LUCY"" and it was GREAT!! Very flavorful and my first one ever. The we went to the 5-8 Club. Nothing like Matt's. Matt's is ABSLOUTELY the BEST by far. 5-8 CLub's was very dry!!!! not MATT's!!!!! Pros: THE BEST JUICY LUCY Cons: Not a GREAT neighborhood because I live around here!!!! hehehehe more

The best old skool bar around, the ultimate in low overhead! 7/21/2008

Okay, this place is a throw back to the fifties, in fact, I would have to say the decor is the same as it was when it opened. The fun of going to this place is that it totally flies in the face of uptight, rude high brow types. Yes it took 45 minutes to get our food, they had a waitress, a grill man and a beer tender. These people know how to work and work they did. It was amazing to watch how efficiently they ran the place. I was very pleased by the prices $1.25 for a tap beer? What year is it again? I must say the staff was friendly and the main feature of courses the Jucy Lucy. If your stuck up and think you're special and are in a hurry you better skip Matt's Bar. I have eaten in many high end restaurants and spent the previous three days eating out while in Minnie for business downtown and paying real money for a meal like $100 a person. Yes I'd much rather have been to Matt's and it was worth the trip out of the way. And if you can't figure out the neighborhood parking and can't figure out why your car got broken into, then there may not be hope for you. One of the comments below complaining about the bathroom really amuses me, if you need an extra clean bathroom and are expecting such in a place like this I have one bit of advice for the ladies, just hold it but most women can do that no problem, right? I for one recommend Matt's. I did not wait to bite into the Jucy and the cheese flew out on to the wax paper, but you can scoop it up with the fries and this burger was a gift, now my life is complete. Thank you Matt's and thank you Jucy Lucy! Pros: Awesome burger, disgustingly greasy yet delightfuly tasty! more

The Best Burgers in the Country.... Bar None 7/10/2008

If you haven't been to Matt's for a Juicy Lucy, then you haven't experienced the BEST BURGER in the country.. Ignore the wimps who can't handle the parking... geez get over it... more

Simply put 6/15/2008

Simply put, I LOVE the burgers and fries at Matt's!!! The service is adequate and the food is outta this world. The prices can meet most budgets and in all reality this place meets most needs. I think the biggest complaint is Matt's doesn't meet most foodie needs... ATM, uber friendly waitstaff, split checks, and Pros: The best Juicy's more

Classic 6/10/2008

Compared to other South Minneapolis bars, the service at Matt's is great. I've waited 45 minutes at a few other establishments around this area just to get the waitress to get up from in front of the TV and take our order. Matt's has a few waitresses that are good at handling lots of people in an efficient, if brisk, way. Food at Matt's is simple and consistently good bar food with tasty hamburgers and generously portioned fries. Pros: Cheap, good food, casual Cons: Brisk service, can get too loud more

Best HomeMade burger indeed! But anything else..... 5/25/2008

Alright.. so.. after so much hype on matt's bar, I desided to go w/ my girlfriend and check it out! more

What Happened? 5/11/2008

Went to Matts today to celebrate Mothers Day. It was the first Mothers Day since my Moms death in Jan.. I've always loved Matts for the friendly service and great burgers but was so dissapointed today. Our waitress was rude and condescending, as was the bartender. The food was good but went to use the restroom and found it unkept and a little disgusting. I realize the ambience of Matts is it's simple menu and relaxed atmosphere but this was too much. Won't be going back for a long time if ever. The last time we were there was so fun, we had a great waitress and had so much fun but today...NOT. Took my Dad there to try and cheer him up a bit but didn't happen. Come on Matts...take a little time to clean it up. more

Good food, but service and friendliness has really gone downhill .... 3/29/2008

I was at Matt's last night for the first time in several years. The place is full of nostalgia for me - I've gone there many times after rehearsals or shows. In the past, the staff was always friendly and welcoming - - after all, we're a group that brings in a lot of business. Last night, however, I couldn't believe how rude and confrontational the waitress was! Someone with us simply commented that their ""one ticket per group"" policy (no matter the size of the group or how many tables) was out of the ordinary. The server seemed to take it as a personal insult. She wouldn't let it go and basically chewed out the customer for it. I think it's just as well the person ended up not ordering anything - I fear what she would have found in it! If anyone from Matt's ever reads this, please make sure all your staff remembers that repeat customers keep them in business, and many won't put up with such rude, uncalled for treatment. Please go back to the friendly service you used to offer. Pros: Good food, cheap Cons: Very rude, confrontational waitress more

Amazing Juicy Lucy's 3/13/2008

They have the best juicy lucy's I've ever had. The cheese inside is very tasty. The fries are very good and they give you a lot for your money. Great dive bar that has an old school feel to it. Limited seating so get there early. Pros: Good Street Parking Cons: Too small. more

good food, not the best service 3/7/2008

the food is low price, good classic american burgers and fries but nothing special. i went on a Sunday around 5 and it was packed! there was only one server and one bar tender/server/food preparer. so the service was lacking. probably wouldn't go back unless i was hungry and in the neighborhood. Pros: price Cons: seating, service, parking more

Dont change a thing 2/29/2008

We recently visited Matt's for the first time in a couple of years and had a great time. Come for the juicy lucy, and stay for the cheap beer. The staff and patrons, many of who were obviously regulars, were friendly, I could have stayed all day! Pros: The Original Jucy Lucy, Friendly staff, Timeless dive bar atmosphere Cons: Not the greatest neighborhood, Lock your car more

Classic juicy! 1/8/2008

There are many that claim their ""Lucy"" as the original - but we didn't really go looking for the original - just a great burger and this is one of the best! A great corner joint that gets you in and out without worrying about the frills! (This means that you shouldn't expect plates, just baskets and wax wrap) You don't have to worry about how to eat the specialty, they always make sure you know the rules so you don't get hurt. Pros: Food Cons: Parking more

Devine dive burger 5/2/2007

If you are looking for a fancy burger or the typical california blt burger look elsewhere. If you want ambience, forget it, unless of course you are like me and love to drink grain belt in a dive bar. This is a bar burger, and it is a darn good one at that. Yes, it is greasy, heart-clogging food, but when you crave the molten cheese with the onions, you have to have it. I used to live over on Longefellow by Matt's, but even now that I live in Saint Paul, I try to get over there when the craving hits. Pros: Grain belt, molten cheese and onions Cons: None more

Jucy Lucy and the Fries are Awesome! 4/30/2007

Matt's Bar has the best burgers and fries in the Twin Cities! I rarely eat a lot of meat, much less hamburgers. I would order pasta over a burger any day, however, I find myself craving Jucy Lucy's! The fries are great- always hot and fresh, just-right crispy, plus you get a huge basket of them. The hamburgers and grilled cheese are good but nothing compares to the Jucy Lucy. It has a liquid cheese center that I find myself craving every couple of months. The atmosphere is great, it is a classic dive-bar, you can show up in your sweatpants and fit right in. Matt's doesn't need fancy decor because their food is enough to have people coming back over and over again. I always take visiting friends there and everyone has loved Matt's. It has actually become a traditional must-eat-stop for some of my out-of-state friends when they come to visit. It is worth at least one visit! Pros: Jucy Lucy, Fries, Casual Cons: Need cash (atm on site, but no credit cards accepted) more

Average- Way better burgers 1/31/2007

In talking to people, this place elicits mixed reviews like no-other. People either love it or think it is medicore. I am in the latter category. The bun is nothing special, just a regular bun. The Burger- a ""Juicy Lucy"" is fine. But both times I have ordered them they can have come back to burnt for my liking. The fries are average. I was excited when I heard about this place- But not even close to the best in the Twin Cities. Pros: Always packed Cons: Burnt Meat more

watch out tongue! 12/26/2006

Only the greatest burger and atmosphere in Minneapolis! Great staff and great service! The fries are perfect and you have to eat the entire basket before your Jucy Lucy is edible anyway. Be sure to try the fried and raw onion combo on your burger. The grill is seasoned to perfection! Pros: everything you want in a bar Cons: everybody else likes it too more

Don't go for the Fries! 12/4/2006

I was pumped up for a great burger and fries after reading the reviews. I Called my order in and picked it up. I love Hot Fresh fries so I didn't want to wait. Grabbed a fry right away and it was SOGGY! Pros: Friendly staff, good burger Cons: Soggy Fries more

An inferior Adrian's 11/18/2006

I've been sporadically going to Matt's since I was a young lad. Now I'm 22 and have travelled to enough bars and enjoyed enough burgers to know that Matt's doesn't even come close to the supreme deliciousness of an Adrian's burger (I'm partial to the Lurtsie: bacon cheeseburger or when I feel like filling my stomach, the monstrous Juicy Lucy.) I gave Matt's a 6, however, because of its atmosphere and value...and almost gave it a 7 because of the HD TV's. But the fact remains - Matt's is receiving undeserved praise for their well-done over-cooked JL...maybe the chef's a vegetarian??? Respect the beef. Pros: Cheap. Good service. Cons: Just average food. more

Yummy burgers! 11/13/2006

No one comes close, Matt's has the best burgers hands down. No frills here, just a basket with the best burger and you can order a basket of fries. Best meal for under $5 in town. Pros: burgers Cons: service more

Best burter 11/2/2006

This by far the best burger in the city. If you can't get In-n-out you must go here. The jucy Lucy's are excellent, and they have great fries. Pros: Great food, cheap more
