The best turtle sundaes! 12/17/2006

Actually, it's just really good ice cream - of all flavors. Margie's Candies (like the name!!!) is on the corner of Western & Armitage in Chicago and it's been there since 1921! The menu offers three pages of ice cream creations that are well priced and generally give you way more ice cream than you bargained for. One item includes more scoops of ice cream than you can picture and feeds something like 30 people! Whenever you order something with fudge, you don't just get the fudge on the ice cream, but instead a gravy boat full of fudge. Mmmmmm... The store itself is rather crowded with it's odd collection of decorations and the candy counter situated smack in the center of the store. Margie's sells homemade chocolates made in their store daily. You can also order many of them shipped online at http://www.margiescandies.com . more

overrated 8/12/2006

We were there earlier this summer because this shop had shown up on some best of Chicago lists. The ice cream was ok and the service was nice. What was not nice was overpaying for a nostalgic experience. I was totally bummed when I saw the hot fudge for my wife's hot fudge come out of the microwave in packets. They were trying, I guess, but, at the end, you get an ok sundae and nothing more and you will pay too much for it. more

Hey, if the Beatles ate here... 5/20/2006

This place has a long history here in Chicago. It's small inside, and there is this funky, weird smell that I just cant' place - kind of like an "old" smell (if that makes sense). But the ice cream sundaes are great. I also love their boxed toffee (lots of chocolate and peanuts on top). I recently picked up a small box of mint chocolates which are very good. I just hope the yups don't ever turn this place into another frickin' condo. STOP WITH THE CONDOS, ALREADY, WILL YA!! Anyway, go and pay them a visit. Just hold your nose and open your mouth to enjoy the sweet treats. (Oh, yeah, and THE BEATLES once ate here!! Yeah, yeah, yeah) more

Ice Cream Heaven 5/5/2006

If you're a chocoholic, then Margie's Candies will make your day. Margie's is a traditional ice cream soda fountain, with just enough kitsch to make your sundae taste that much better. Prices are pretty reasonable, and the menu itself is rather extensive. One of my friends is an absolute dessert nut, and he salivates at the mention of Margie's. more

could've been better 3/26/2006

This place looks old fashionedish and that's what attracted me to it. I'm always looking for a place that will bring me back to the fifties or something. Their sweet treats are just okay to me and the service isn't as good as it should be. My visit wasn't bad, but it wasn't memorable enough to make me want to go back. more

Margie's 3/26/2006

I have heard some folks mention about a wierd smell that comes from here. That didn't stop me from trying some of their delicious chocolates. I have not had a sundae yet from them. I also heard the Beatles visited here in the mid 60's. There have been alot of famous people that have come thru the doors of this neighborhood institution. Old school charm! more

Good Ice Cream. 3/16/2006

A unique place to go for dessert. This place has been in the neighborhood for a long time, long before many Chicago candy shops started. Beside that the fact this place is so small and often too crowded, their Ice Cream are different. They also sell chocolate and other treats. I would recommend to come during weekdays when it's not too crowded and the line is not too long to wait, or just come to take out ! more

Margie's Candies- the best place for sundaes 1/28/2006

They're gigantic. They're outrageously tasty. They're served in huge glass clamshells. No wonder the beatles went there after their one of their Chicago Shows. It's filled with pictures of Margie and her family, old, authentic memorobelia and candy, candy, candy. Though I've never tried the candy, I have had their sundaes and sodas and a sandwich (theyve got food, too) and I deem it delicious. more

Classic ice cream parlor 1/13/2006

The charm of this place is that there once was a Margie who started an ice cream parlor. In other words, it is not a corporate clone, it is a one of a kind place. It is a neighborhood institution that generations of folks have gone to as kids and then brought their kids when they became parents. I discovered it after my kids were fairly grown, so I did not become a regular. Refined surgar is best handled like the dangerous drug that it is, but that is a whole 'nuther story, eh? more
