I would highly recommend this place to everyone! This place is such a GEM!!! My boyfriend and I came across this place by accident one day after we went to the SF zoo because we wanted to just drive along the coast. We stopped because we were curious about the rates(I figured we likely were not going to end up doing it because horseback riding on the beach is usually $65-$100/hour). We were thrilled to find out that it was $50 for one hour! The gentleman who greeted us at the front, set us up with our liability forms and got us on horses right away. Now I have to say, especially for the price, that this was by far, the most beautiful trail I have ever been on while horse back riding! Not only that, but we spent a good chunk of the time actually on the beach and walking through the water. The trail starts off going down a little cliff/mountain, and the ocean is literally right to your left. It was incredible! 90% of the time the ocean was visible to the left from the trail we were riding along. The horses seemed pretty spunky, and thrilled themselves to be going out on the trail also. I was also happy to find that our guides weren't too strict and we didn't have to stay in a single file line the entire time. We were able to kinda go out on our own pace along the beach. This I think was so much more relaxing in compare to other horse back rentals when the guides are constantly on you about staying right next to them(especially when you are an experienced rider). My boyfriend, and family, and I will be returning to this ranch very soon! This is our new summer spot! more

We recently took a group of 10 year old girls here for a beach trail ride and they had a wonderful time. All the girls had experience riding, which is why we chose a place that didn't offer a lot of instruction. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and laid-back. The horses looked healthy and seemed pretty mellow as well. I wouldn't hesitate to bring a group of kids here again. Overall, I felt this was a good value for the price. more

Great ride, nice people and gentle horses. I've ridden for 20+ years, owned horses and work in the veterinary profession and I really don't understand the bad reviews. Yes, it's an older ranch with older trail horses and not a fancy high-priced dressage barn catering to women with too much time and money for their own good. But inhumane? Certainly not. The guide was friendly and once he saw my friend and I had experience even let us canter along the beach. The horses were eager to go and seemed to really enjoy the departure from plodding along with newbies. That being said I was also here February past and the horses really took care of my inexperienced boyfriend. My friend and I will definitely be back. more

Took my 12 year old son here for his first horseback riding experience. It was AWESOME! I called the day before, whoever answered the phone said just come down, gave a suggestion for the 10am ride as the fog had burned off by that time the day I called. Showed up at 9:50, filled out forms, got a helmet for my son and hit the trail with another parent and his daughter. Had a great time! Trotted in the water, went up and down the beach...was initially disappointed we couldn't go for 90 minutes because they were short handed...but the hour ride was just right. Watered and fed our horses carrots after the ride. Then fed ALL the horses waiting for riders carrots from the big bag we brought. Great start to a wonderful day. more

So much fun! First time I went horseback riding. And it was great. The horses are very well trained. The people are very friendly. $40 is a good price for 1 hour of horseback riding. Overall, great experience. more

I had a great time, and Sergio was a great wrangler. He was very mindful of how the horses were doing, and he was open to what I wanted out of the ride. more

We arrived on a Saturday morning and were the last two riders on a full contingent, about 20 in total with 4 wranglers. The staff was helpful and friendly and kept a close eye on us. The scenery was very beautiful and the horses knew what they were doing. It cost $40/person for about 1 1/2 hour ride. I would highly recommend this experience. more

Steep trails down to the beach might intimidate some beginner riders but we thought it was fun. Riding on the beach and in the water was wonderful! I just wish the ocean ride had been longer than the trails down to the beach. We would ride here again, no question about it. Stable/ranch hands and guides were friendly and one of my best friends was a tabby cat who plunked himself in my lap while we waited for a group of beginners to get on their horses. more

Great horses, nice guide, and beautiful ride down to the beach. You can't beat this for a romantic ride or family ride. We will go back when in town. John was a great guide and made sure we were safe and secure the entire ride. more

Our experience at Mar Vista Stables was outstanding. Parking is free and right in front. No reservations are needed, they make up groups as people arrive. We paid ($40 a person), signed the waiver (4 pages - thank the lawyers), had an orientation, saddled up, and headed out within about 15-20 minutes. There is a restroom but it's pretty primitive. The one hour ride is divided into thirds, with about 20 minutes each spent riding to the beach, on the beach, and back. The scenery is amazing and our horses were well-behaved. My “horsecam” was a Canon point-and-shoot with the strap always secured around one wrist as it would be difficult, and sometimes impossible, to retrieve a dropped item. Be aware that any camera requiring both hands would be tough to use. One hint – bring a bandanna or scarf if you’re sensitive to dust because it gets thick now and again. Helmets are optional for adults. I wore one because I wear one on a bike so it makes sense that if there’s the slightest chance of being tossed off something the size of a horse, I’ll take the helmet every time. We had two “wranglers,” one leading the group and the other bringing up the rear. We had read (and been amused by) reviews on other sites complaining about horses that “don’t listen” and so on. Our experience has been that for the most part, trail ride horses know what to do. This was no exception. There’s usually no need to “drive” or guide your horse – this is their job and they have plenty of practice. So while riders are given instructions on how to handle the reins (horses don’t respond to verbal commands!) and you definitely want to pay attention, be gentle and don’t overdo it. Some of the descents are steep, but not frighteningly so. The trail occasionally runs within ten feet or so of steep dropoffs that may concern people with a fear of heights. With that said, I myself have that fear and it didn’t bother me at all. The vegetation also closes in pretty tight in a couple of spots. Bottom line: the ride was a blast. We’d do it again and highly recommend it. more

We went to Mar Vista Stables today and had a fantastic time!!! I brought my 14 year old daughter and her friend to ride, for my daughter's Birthday. The staff was excellent, Junior was our favorite~ professional, helpful and kind. The horses were beautiful, healthy and gentle. We were treated kindly by all. I can't think of a better way to spend a Birthday. The scenery was amazing!!! I would recommend this stable to all my friends. I've been riding for over 34 years and look forward to my next visit to Mar Vista Stables :) Additional comment~ In regards to a few of the other reviews... I NEVER saw any sign of abuse. The horses were healthy and happy. The worker's were very kind to us. We rode with a group of 15 total riders. Everyone had smiles on their faces :) more

We try to go horseback riding wherever we go on vacation. Mar Vista (ocean view) provides an exceptional riding experience. The horses seem well-fed; and, well-groomed. My daughter takes riding lessons back home; and, she said they looked and behaved great. Our guide took us along the coast, through well-worn paths, which provided the horses with sure footing, whether headed up-hill or down. We walked at leisurely pace, so everyone could get lots of great pictures; and, not to stress the animals. The views were absolutely stunning. Prior to leaving, we took a lap or two around the paddock, to ensure everyone had the hang of turning the horses, stopping them; and, getting them to go. Not everyone in our group was as experienced as my daughter, so the extra time was well-appreciated. We will continue to seek out horseback riding opportunities wherever we go. Mar Vista Stables was terrific. more

Horse adventure 6/11/2010

The stable, the horses, the wranglers-Zach, Jaimie and Hallie were wonderful! They wanted to give us a good time by asking if we wanted to do more trails or more beach, to customize our experience. We went on the 2 hour ride and absolutely enjoyed it. We took a slow pace and was able to enjoy the surroundings, the flowers, the trails, the birds, the beach. We had great conversation with the wranglers. Afterward, we hung around the barn watching others go on their trail ride, little children riding the pony ride and witnessed how safety-conscious the wranglers are. Everyone was happy. I will look forward to my next riding adventure at Mar Vista. Pros: safe horses, nice price, relaxing experience more

Horseback riding on the beach 6/10/2010

Mar Vista horseback riding on the beach is really worth the trip! The trail down to the beach is a winding path-\r around fabulous views past wonderful flowers --\r accompanied by the sounds of birds. It is a beautiful location. \r \r As we rode on the beach, we looked up and could see people handgliding off the top of the mountain (like giant birds). There was a huge ship out on the ocean blowing it's horn as we continued\r our ride. Wow. Great sights and sounds.\r \r The pace is just perfect to allow the maximum enjoyment of the experience of riding horses ON THE BEACH ! (The ocean-the surf-the relaxing motion of the horses...)\r \r We liked the ride so much we went on Saturday and came back on Sunday. \r \r Zack was our guide. He made the whole journey such a pleasure, from the trails he chose\r to the care and safety of all the riders and horses. What else can you ask for?\r If you want a relaxing yet exhilarating experience- This is the place! \r \r If you want to\r race, rent a go cart!\r \r We also rode with Jamie and Hallie who were every bit and more than you could ask for in a wrangler! Interesting and fun, -calmly guiding our group through a thoroughly enjoyable horseback riding experience- in a thoroughly special\r location. \r \r The odd thing is the only review I saw was not much to go on, so I am happy to leave a more accurate and probably more common review of what\r most people experience. Every group I saw coming and going were ALL SMILES\r and excited talk. \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r Pros: Great views and time to enjoy them! Cons: Wanted to stay all day! more

Our guide was our first encounter with racism! 9/13/2009

I am not sure where to start one this one but let's start with the positives. 1- The scenery from the stable to the beach is awesome. 2- The price is relatively cheap. As for the negatives: 1- The beach is filthy. There was a floating mattress, a pair of shoes, a dead bird, a couple of dead seals, and junk all along the beach. 2- This place is unsafe for beginners. We were all beginners and I told the ranch that: on the phone, when we first got to the ranch and when we mounted the horses. My horse for example does not stop or turn when asked to. The only thing it will do is follow any horse in front of it. This is safe only if the guide is the person in front. Unfortunately we had an irresponsible guide (Zack I believe his name was) who as soon as we got to the beach refrained from taking the lead so the horses started running and a couple of people almost fell. 3- Last but not least our guide had a filthy raci$t mouth. He thought that we were running the horses on purpose and not because they got out of control! I'll just list some of his remarks and let you judge if you would like to hear them on your next trail ride: ""Bullsh##"" ""You f### pi$$ me off"" ""You damn Eye-ranians riding your camels"" (BTW, we are not from Iran) And finally ""make sure you write your nationality when leaving the review"" I have been in the US/Canada for over 10 years and I have never heard such raci$t remarks. It was a disappointment! Anyhow, as I said before I believe the guide's name was Zack. For anyone who is interested in a professional trial ride on the beach, I would recommend ""Sea Horse Ranch"" at Half Moon Bay. Pros: Price Cons: Racism, Safety more

When my daughter was 3-years old, she used to always tell me she wanted a horse. So my friend from California told me about this Mexican horse stable, so I took my daughter there. The place is well-maintenanced and the horses are very gentle. It doesn't even really stink and my daughter loves it!I will recommend it! more
