Getting more yuppie all the time & bartender has an attitude 3/25/2010

I'm a native & I have been going to this bar on and off for near thirty years but last Tuesday was my last time. How come? Well the bartender did the old Vegas trick of saying I owed ten because he used some fancy vodka that I did not order. And then when he said "fine" ('cause he knew I wasn't going to pay) I was fishing around for change (because I wasn't going to give him a tip) he said, and I quote: "I don't take any thing less than quarters" Who the #%#@ hired this pompous fool? He is the first bartender I haven't tipped and he is emblematic of how this bar has just become another yuppiefied relic of the old New Orelans...by, by Maple Leaf bar never again! Pros: used to be good Cons: too yuppie more

Enamoured out of towner... 6/9/2009

Loved this place...great atmosphere and the tin walls and ceiling are remarkable. We don't have tin bottles in OH so another tourist moment. Love that the vibe was in flux...meaning that the bar staff is impressive at being in the moment and shape shifts to the moment....wished I had seen it raccous. Wish it was my neighborhood bar...sigh. Pros: ,,,brought by a regular. Felt welcomed off the bat... Cons: didn't have wine zinfandel...it's not a wine bar..I adjusted more

Best Monday night combo in NOLA 5/4/2008

Every time I visit New Orleans, I plan on spending Monday nights at the Maple Leaf. Papa Grows Funk carries on the tradition of great music from about 10 PM till closing. Friendly crowd that's a mix of locals (mostly) and out of towners, great bartenders, and music that makes you want to move. If you can get there early enough, eat at Jacques-Imo's two doors up the street. Great food and great service. A night out of the French Quarter - imagine that! Pros: reasonable cover, outdoor patio, two bars, friendly crowd Cons: it's a cab ride from FQ and warehouse district, on hot nights it is warm inside more

Good music, people, and food! 3/18/2008

Great place to get away from the usual New Orleans scene. Things don't seem to get going until after 10, but then it rocks. Great place to hear music, meet some good people, and enjoy a non-Bourbon Street experience. You're in for a great time if they have a crawfish boil.....served in rounds on a 3 by 5 sheet of plywood placed over the pool table with corn on the cob. S*** the head! Pros: Music, venue, people, atmosphere. more

Love this locals place 4/7/2006

Post-K still a great place to hear live music, less than $10 to get in most nights. Our favorites are George Porter and whoever he plays with, regular gig almost every week, Bonearama, Papa Grow Funk. Couldn't be a more friendly casual place that locals frequent and where tourists can feel comfortable. Uptown location so you can get out of the French Quarter and see a different side to New Orleans music and music clubs. Bring your dancing shoes, get a few cheap beers and shake your booty til the wee hours. Looks like a total dive bar on the outside, don't judge a book by it's cover some of the best music in New Orleans is playing on the inside! Pros: Little or no cover, Inexpensive Drinks, Local love it Cons: JazzFest gets crowded more

Best of The Best 8/21/2005

It's hard to pick my favorite New Orleans bar, but this has to be it. I love The MAple Leaf!! It is by far my favorite place to see live music, the drikns are cheap if you know how to ask for the specials. The back bar and patio are the best in the city and the amount of "smokers" is quite high! more

Good Music, Friendly Locals 8/1/2002

Have only been here twice. The first time a couple of years ago on a Sunday night. There weren't many people, but a great band was playing and we were kicking up our heels with the locals. We also shot pool and played chess in the back. Everyone was extremely friendly. Went there again this past Saturday night. Good R&B band playing, very crowded. Once again, friendly locals, but terrible bartender. Would definitely go there again, but I actually prefer it on an "off" night when there's more room to move around. Pros: Good music Cons: Out of the way more

Uptown classic 6/10/2002

Home to Rebirth Brass Band (Tuesday nights) on Oak Street, uptown. Great music venue and bar. Small, crowded, wooden floors, but thee place to see Rebirth and Walter Wolfman Washington. If you dont want to pay the cover, hang out outside with all the other students peering in the window and sipping a brew from the outside bar. The Spleefgives new meaning to Party hard", You can truly make yourself at home in the back patio, but be warned: If you are indulging in your favorite contraband, you may be asked to share. more

Required stop for true music-lovers 5/20/2002

You haven't experienced real New Orleans music until you've worked up a sweat dancing your tootsies off at the Maple Leaf. The crowd is casual and eclectic -- from college kids to burn-outs -- but a love of can't-stand-still-music is the common thread that ties everyone together. ReBirth is the show to catch. more

Catch a Concert 5/20/2002

A dive that barely seems big enough to host a band...until you realize how many just how many people can be packed onto the dance floor. Catch Dirty Dozen or another fun show during Jazzfest for a truly funkified experience. Pros: great shows Cons: small more
