Great Falafel, Easy On The Wallet 3/22/2007

Mamoun's is the perfect snack spot. The falafel and other assorted Middle Eastern snacks are all very cheap and despite the grimy atmosphere and tiny interior space, Mamoun's is still my #1 pick for falafel when I am in the area. I wouldn't travel far to get here but if I'm in the Village I always have to stop in for a quick bite. The best thing about Mamoun's is that it is open really late so even after leaving one of the bars in the area there is a cheap, delicious snack just a few blocks away at most. The one downside... cash only... but with such cheap falafel and snacks, that's usually not a problem. Pros: Cheap, Cheap, Cheap, Delicious Falafel and Middle Eastern Food, Quick Service Cons: Tiny Space, Grimy more

Still going strong 11/23/2006

With so many eateries going the way of gone thanks to the explosion of the pricey highrises it's great when places like Mamoun's are still going strong. I don't want to date myself and say how long I've been enjoying their fried-to-order falafel, but it's been a mighty long time! So for cheap, realiable, delicious eats when your out on the town or just walking by this place still can't be beat! Pros: Cheap, hot, consistant Cons: More seating would be nice but who are we kidding, that's never going to happen! more

The ONLY place to get a Falafel! 11/2/2006

It might look like a whole in the wall but what more can you possibly want? They're fast, they're cheap, AND they are absolutely delicious! This is the best place to get a Falafel in the city! Pros: Cheap, Tasty, Filling Cons: Space is soooo small! more

Thank you, God! There's one on St. Mark's now! 10/31/2006

Rejoice, East Village! There's a new Mamoun's on St. Mark's just off Third Ave. This place makes the second-best falafel sandwich in the city (#1 is Rainbow, on 17th/Broadway) and it's so far superior to vile Chickpea around the corner (saurkraut does NOT belong on a falafel sandwich!!!) as to be in a different league. St. Mark's Mamoun's has the same three tables as the MacDougal shop, as well as two outdoor cafe tables on the sidewalk. Only downside is that it's down a short flight of stairs and thus handicapped-inaccessible. Pros: Great cheap street food, fast service Cons: almost no seating more

if you live or have even visited NYC and don't know about this place, HOW CAN U NOT??? mamouns is the best place to get falafel pita by far. $2 for the tastiest, fastest food you will ever eat. just go here, and dont be fooled by the fact that its a closet, just eat the food and you will be addicted!! more

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOD 10/18/2006

Good, cheap, but overrated & hiit-or-miss 8/27/2006

It's good and cheap, and although there's usually a long annoying line of NYU kids it moves fast. Service is quick. The first few times I had the hummus and babaganoush falafel, it was great. But over the years, I think the quality has slightly declined--maybe because the popularity increased and certain sacrifices were made by this tiny restaurant, or maybe it was just those fews days I went.\r \r Stop by if you're already in the area, but don't break your neck to go there.\r \r Pros: Cheap Cons: Hiit or Miss, crowded beyond capacity max. more

Want some dirt in your pita? 7/25/2006

I used to get the tabouli sandwiches, but the last TWO times I got one, it was gritty like the parsley hadn't been washed. If you've ever eaten sand (not intentionally, I hope), you know how unpleasant this is. I've given up on the place. more

If you want a cheap colonic 6/28/2006

2 of my friends and myself went to mamoons last week, and got butt river for 6 days. I lost 15 pounds I recomend mamoons instead of a colonic because a colonic cost 60 bucks. don't get me wrong I will go back I need to lose 50 more pounds.\r \r Thanks\r Davide Renne Pros: Weight loss Cons: they are more

Don't believe the hype-- it's actually GROSS. 6/16/2006

(sorry about readability here, this isn't taking my paragraph breaks.) Okay, we are falafel connoisseurs... not experts or snobs, but we like our falafel, and my girlfriend is even quite picky about it. So on our trip to NYC, we sought out the best falafel. And let me tell you, Mamoun's was the exact opposite of it. We got lucky by only having a short line; the positives ended there. The falafel sanwich there consisted of a pita filled with hummus, falafel, and other ingredients. To start with, the pita was nothing special-- their pitas are fresh, if you consider that to mean ""fresh off the truck from the distributor"". They had 50 bags of pitas, the same kind you get at the supermarket, they'd rip open a bag and you hope that you don't get a dry one. For allegedly being ""the best"", I'd expect more... this is the food capital of the world, they've got to be able to get better pita. Grade: C minus.\r The hummus was pasty, and chalky, yet was still really watery. NO THANKS, I like my hummus nice and spreadable and with a pleasing flavor. Again: pasty and CHALKY. And runny. Bring your soup spoon. Grade: F.\r \r The falafel ball itself: UTTERLY DEVOID OF TASTE. Are you kidding me? This place is ""the best""? The falafel seriously had zero taste. The texture was okay, and it wasn't too oily, but I would hope for some actual FLAVOR. It had no kick or spice AT ALL. Your average falafel at any other place in the city will have more flavor. Grade: D.\r \r Other ingredients in the falafel sandwich: iceberg lettuce, pre-chopped in the bag, and diced tomatoes. Gee, thanks-- anything else that they can get in bulk for pennies, just to make you feel like you're getting a full sandwich? Grade: C minus.\r \r Other foods: the other thing we tried there was the tabouleh. ""They can't mess THIS up,"" I thought. But I was wrong. It had minimal bulgur-- which is a key component-- really, almost none at all! And the parsley-- the other key component-- was minimal too. Their ""tabouleh"" was basically chopped cucumbers with a bit of parsley. Grade: D.\r \r Atmosphere: that is putting it nicely. We were lucky-- or unlucky-- enough to get the booth right there. The interior is dingy and dirty. It made us want to eat quickly and get out... which, come to think of it, is what they might want. \r \r Were we there on an off-day? Well if you'd like a second opinion, my sister agrees with me. I mentioned my Mamoun's experience to her, and it turned out that she and her husband had eaten there on a trip several months earlier-- also while questing for ""the best falafel"". She had the same complaints, but with one additional one: they gave her a can of Coca-Cola that had a layer of dust and ""something mysterious crawling on it."" With that in mind, I'll give the atmosphere/interior a grade of D minus.\r \r I'm sure you Mamoun's devotees will prepare the boiling oil for my next trip to NYC, but please look elsewhere in the city for falafel-- keep an open mind. Chickpea's was good (though still nothing special.) The place across the street from Mamoun's-- I don't remember the name-- was MUCH better for everything we ate. Give that one a try-- their falafel sandwich was tasty and much more enjoyable, and the staff was nicer, and wasn't trying to hurry you out. I am really just a person who likes falafel, and went there hoping for the best, but instead I was HORRIBLY DISAPPOINTED. I've tried to be very descriptive with my criticisms here.\r \r So let's look at all these grades above. C-, F, D, C-, D, D-. This works out to a ""GPA"" (for ""Grossly Putrid Adventure"") of 1.01. Any way you look at it, that's a solid F. Sorry, Mamoun's, but I'm here to tell people that the emperor wears no clothes.\r \r (Incidentally, best falafel we've had is at Truly Mediterranean in SF CA) \r Pros: Quick service Cons: Dingy/dirty atmosphere, and the food was actually really BAD-- see review more
