A waste of time 12/2/2010

I have eaten here many times over the years and the only thing that remains good about this place is the view. The food was very bland and the presentation poor compared to my previous visits. The portions are much smaller and the price is much larger! Even the service was lacking a bit. more

Everything was amazing 11/16/2009

Everything here was amazing! First, when you walk down the steps, you are greeted with a spectacular view of the white crests of the ocean, beautiful gardens and amazing sceanery. When you are seated, the view is still amazing. I had the shrimp watons for appetizer and the MahiMahi. Some of the best food on the island. more

$100 View, $0.50 quality, $0.10 customer service 7/9/2009

The location and view are top quality; with an ambience that requires a modest tweek to be ""fine dining"" material. The meal was a 7 out of 10.....Hey, when the entree prices rival those of high-end charity events, the meals MUST be truly outstanding to warrant higher praise. The customer service is of McDonalds quality; my car was valet parked (mandatory at this restaurant) and returned to me with a 1.5 inch gash. The manager claimed his people are ""above reproach and 100% honest"" and apologized profusely for this unfortunate situation, but sadly, admitted he was ""powerless"" to ""do"" anything about it. Repeated calls to the establishments vice president (as suggested my the manager) were met with deafening silence. I was left to cover the repair cost by the rental agency (who actually recommended the restaurant). Overall, a very frustrating experience ruining a perfectly good day during our honeymoon; a very expensive meal indeed. BTW, a top notch meal was had at Stella Blues in Kihei; for about half the price!! Now that's a real quality restaurant!! Pros: View Cons: Zero Customer Service more

Very good experience! 3/4/2009

On our first trip to Maui we decided to have a special dinner at Mama's. We made a reservation for 5:45 so we could watch the sky darken over the ocean (you can't actually see the sunset from this location, but it's beautiful just the same). We were seated immediately at a table one back from the windows, as it wasn't yet too crowded. We ordered drinks and the lobster and avocado appetizer w/taro chips, which was yummy. I ordered a curry dish w/three types of fish (ahi, opah, mahimahi) that came w/a small side plate of chutney, diced bananas and macadamia nuts. It was out of this world! Perfectly cooked and an ample amount of food for me (and I can eat). My husband got the opah w/caramelized maui onion. He said it was exactly what he was hoping it would be: flavorful, well-seasoned, and perfectly cooked. We enjoyed a leisurely meal, listening to in-house music system, mixed w/the sounds of the surf and voices of other patrons. Pros: Ambiance, Food, View more

Still drooling over the macadamia-nut-crusted mahi mahi 2/9/2009

OK, yeah, it's expensive. The Hawaiian fish chowder was a great way to start the meal. The curry was flavorful. And the crab-stuffed, macadamia-nut-crusted mahi mahi with lobster tail was fresh. Service was very attentive. Nice view of the ocean. You only live once, so go. Pros: It's DELICIOUS! Cons: It's EXPEN$IVE! more

Nice, relaxed and tropical ambiance, but food was marginal and prices were astronomical 7/1/2008

This restaurant was highly recommended, but after looking at the menu and prices, I wondered why. I was told that the food was excellent and very fresh. The fish tasted good, but I have had much better at other restaurants for far less. I had a delicious fish dinner at the Four Seasons hotel restuarant in Maui and the price was less expensive there! I was really offended by the $16 cocktails. For that price, I expected the drinks to taste great and be in a large glass. I had a Mama's special cocktail and tasted a Pink Floyd cocktail and Mai Tai, all were flavorless and tasted like they had very little alcohol - definitely not worth $16. I had a much better Mai Tai at the Four Season's hotel and it was only $12 and I enjoyed it while taking in an awesome view there. The wait staff at Mama's were really friendly and nice, but considering everything that Mama's has to offer, they do not make the trip to Mama's and the cost of the dinner worth it. I would not return to this restaurant and I would not recommend it to anyone visiting Maui. If you do decide to eat at Mama's, try the Lilikoi creme brulee - it was delicious. Pros: ambiance and friendly atmosphere Cons: overpriced, food is just OK, cocktails are awful and definitely not worth $16 more

Not what it used to be 5/17/2008

We have been to Mama's several times over the years, the last time in 2006. It has always been high priced but our visit this time was a great disappointment. As if the $16.00 cocktails are not bad enough, but the menu is way overpriced. The terrible onion soup is $12.00, with what seems like canned beef broth and no crouton or good gruyere cheese. The surf and turf is $115.00, and fish dishes are in the $45-55 range. Appetizers are expensive too. With a bottle of wine, expect to pay about $200.00 for dinner for two. Pros: location Cons: prices, food quality more

Not The Best 4/29/2008

I like Mama's but if you are not a local, then you'll like it better. You wouldn't know the difference but, their menu is over priced! Living here, you would know it is over priced and you can get fish prepared the same or similar somewhere else for at least $10 cheaper. Over rated could be the word. No doubt the views are spectacular, yes, so pay the price to eat and look at views of the ocean. Service is good, sometimes I feel because we are locals, our waiters/waitress don?t want to tend to us as much. You know, you get that feeling when they kind of ignore you? Service should be at all the same level. I'll go back maybe once a year or less. I don't miss their cooking. Pros: Views Cons: Valet Parking Only more

Fantastic soup!!! Wonderful view!!! fresh fish!! 4/12/2008

My family and I just came home from Maui this morning and I am already online looking for recipes from Mama's!! Great atmosphere, wonderful flavors and fantastic views! It is a must if you are on Maui. Easy to find and great shops on the way! Pros: fresh ingredients, great taste and terrific views Cons: Bring a light jacket or sweater..can get breezy more

Disappointed with the food but beautiful Scenery 4/3/2008

I read many reviews on this restaurant before visiting Maui. I felt this was a must stop visit and I booked reservations ahead of time. When arriving the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous with one of the best views. We were seated and I just feel in love with the restaurant and ambiance of the place. The food however was just average food and not at all what I expected. I guess after reading so many great reviews I was expecting the food to be fantastic and was highly disappointed by the quality of the food. I felt very mislead to eat here and didn't even finish my food. However the drinks were very good and the atmosphere was amazing so if you don't mind spending a lot of money on just average food you will definitely be impressed with your surroundings and cocktails. more

I sent the Shrimp Won Ton back 2/17/2008

My new bride and I went to Mama's on our honeymoon based on the recommendation of good friends. The prices were not just high, they were staggering. For instance, just a cup of coffee at Mama's (not a specialty drink like a latte, just a cup) was twelve to fourteen dollars. Pros: Beautiful view of the ocean (like many on Maui) Cons: Poor quality food - at any price more

The view? Priceless. Food? Overpriced IMHO 1/27/2008

We knew this place would be expensive...but we were shocked at the high price and small portion. My husband got a whole THREE spears of asparagus on the side of his Mahi Mahi stuffed with lobster and crab ($50). It just wasn't worth the money. The view however was spectacular and the service was excellent. I loved the towel given to you by the server at the end of the meal, soaked in almond oil...I will go back, but more prepared to spend more than I wanted to last time! Pros: Beautiful scenery!!! Cons: High prices... more

Wonderful meal 12/4/2007

I won't repeat the other great reviews, but just say the food was superb, the restaurant itself is gorgeous, the ambiance pleasant but not stuffy, and the service was great. It is more expensive than Citysearch ranks it (in the $$$$ range), but totally worth it. I will go there gain for sure next time I am in Maui. Pros: Incredible food and views. Cons: Nothing! (it's not cheap, but you get what you pay for) more

A smile to your palate 11/19/2007

For appetizers we had sashimi, crab cakes, shimp wontons and the seared beef polynesian. The sashimi was excellent. Crab cakes and wontons were my least favorite. They were a bit greasy and over cooked. The seared beef was wonderful. The beef is served on ripe grilled papaya. The sweetness on the papaya was balanced with the olive oil and lime juice. The flavors complimented each other. The food is unbelievably fresh. Fish were caught minutes before arriving on our dinner plate. For our main course we had Opah and Mahimahi. The Opah was juicy and flavorful. The Mahimahi was the better out of the two. The macadamia nut crust added a light crips to the soft, flaky, buttery fish. As we had dinner we sat and overlooked an ocean sunset, for the restaurant had no walls or windows. From our dinning table we gazed at the orange and yellow hues reflecting off the soft white sand beach as the sun slowly shadowed the curved coconut trees. Great ambiance, great food. The only set back was the service, but theres room for improvment. I can't wait to return. Pros: Great food and good views. Cons: Terrible Service!!! more

making memories! 7/6/2007

My Sister insisted that we try Mama's Fish House, forgetting to tell us to bring our piggy bank. In spite of the total bill $250+ I have absolutely no cons. We were greeted and seated promptly and had a wonderful view of the ocean which is almost right outside of the large window. We splurged on specialty drinks and appetizers that were just so delicious! The whole meal was outstanding and very fresh. We couldn't help but have an exquisite bottle of wine with our dinner. After dinner we tried Mama's special coffee and a marvelous dessert. Priceless... well uh, almost. more

Fantastic Fresh Seafood, Incredible View 4/17/2007

Mama's is the best Overall Restaurant in Maui. Pros: Great Location Cons: Expensive more

Why the hype? 11/9/2006

My husband and I weren't impressed. Yes, the decor and atmosphere is wonderful, especially as the sun sets. However, the food was so-so. We were expecting a lot because EVERYONE raves about mama's fish house. We don't understand what the hype is all about.... because it's definitely not about the food. During our 10-day stay in maui, we fine-dined every night... and mama's fish house is pretty much near the bottom of our list of fabulous maui restaurants. Gerard's (located in the Plantation Inn in Lahaina) is definitely the best in Maui.... If there is one restaurant you must try in maui, it's Gerard's..... so skip mama's. more

Fantastic views and good food 10/25/2006

During lunch you can watch the surfers and wind surfers while eating lunch. The service is excellent but you must get your reservation in quickly to get your perferred time to eat. A few days is the best time. more

You Must Expereince This 9/28/2006

Our friends took us to dinner and we were excited and truly looking forward to the experience. We were not in the least disappointed. We arrived just as the sun was setting and as we walked down the steps, past the car, were amazed at the setting and ambience. Here was a restaurant literally steps from the beach, full of energy yet entirely in control. We had reservations but did have to wait a few minutes which allowed us to take pictures and relax on the benches outside. Once seated, we were treated with true Aloha. Our waiter was knowledgeable, courteous and prompt with true attention to detail. This did not change the entire evening. While reviewing the menu, the prices did stand out, but the food lived up to the expectation that was promised. Pros: Overall great experience Cons: Only 3 seatings available, reserve well in advance! more

Very, very... (at infinity) Pricey, but Great Food 7/9/2006

The final bill will be a shock, but if you get a table nearest the ocean, the view and the food will make the bill more palatable. It is near the airport (no other reason to be in that area unless you're driving the ""Road to Hana""), so this was a great way to spend our last evening before our red-eye flight back to the States. Pros: Food very tasty, ambience Cons: Prices (min $35/plate), service more
