good food nice atmosphere, over priced, and americanized 1/18/2009

The food here is good, and I like the atmosphere, very trendy. However, the service is nothing to shout about, and the meals seem very Americanized, so if you are looking for authentic Thai, go elsewhere. Also, the menu is a bit overpriced in my opinion. more

Great Food, but SPOTTY service 8/19/2007

I've eaten at Malee's a few times now and thought I should make a couple comments. First the good: It's proximity to the movies and shops makes it a great option. The food has always been very good with the sushi being above average. The portions are the typical American size...too big, and the number of plates on a table for a group can quickly outgrow the space you have (but some people don't mind this). The decor is nice and simple and the bathrooms have always been clean when I've been there. Now the bad, and I hate to point it out because I worked in restaurants for several years. The service at Malee's has routinely been SPOTTY at best. Drinks take FOREVER. The hosts are nice enough, but often under-trained. And most importantly, the servers are spread thin. The servers we've had have always been nice enough and accomodating, but they are often taking care of too large a section and you can feel neglected. The service at the bar is also always spread thin as the bartender is either distracted making restaurant drinks, or is focused on his/her customers and the restaurant patrons wait forever for their drinks. I've seen managers behind the bar trying to lend a hand EVERY time. They simply need to overstaff their bartenders. Often there is only 1. I've also noticed that after food is delivered, again because the staff is attending to so many tables, if you've got a problem or need something, you won't see your server until that "Is everything okay?" check-up which often comes at like the 6-8 minute mark instead of the 1-2 minute mark. All told, I like this restaurant and I visit it with my family whenever I'm in town from L.A., I just wish they would address some of their service issues. Pros: Decor, Food choices and quality, location Cons: Servers spread thin, Hosts inadequately trained, bar service hitt or miss more

Try Everything!!! 4/23/2007

So, a client gives you "thank you gift" and knows that you love great food. Trouble is it's all for one restaurant and it's $100 worth. This however, is no problem if you have to use them for Malees Thai Restaurant on Tatum (or their other place in Scottsdale -- just as great.) So, where to begin? Being from NY, I always engage the service people to find the most popular items, the best of the best and the specials (and flirt with the women :) ) etc. So, far so good. I found the staff knew all the dishes and it seemed could describe the tastes and their likes of most of the dishes on the menu They obviously eat here, and a lot. For example, to die for foods: that I also like and you must try are: Coco Chili Fish! or Tom Ka Gai soup and my current favorite: Chicken Panang. All these have a clean (and sometime spicy if ordered hot) flavor that accents the food without overpowering it. The Panang Chicken that I like the most now has the crispness of the veggies and nuts, while the chicken is moist. The fish is wonderful with you wanting to take the sauce home in a bowl with a spoon... Oh you have to try this dish too: The Spinach Chicken that comes over a bed of crisp spinach with awesome sauce and chicken. (Okay now I am hungry)... oh, the gift that I got can be purchased for 1/2 price! so, that means that when I got my own gift cards, I paid $50 and got $100 in food. It means my $100 gift that got me started also was only $50 but I am happy that I was introduced to this wonderful place !(Oh, tax and tip not included in these) I suggest the mailing list to find out when to get them.. they make great gifts at 1/2 price!!!!. they offer cooking classes too but haven't taken them.. Pros: taste, flavors come through, lots of food on the menu more

Malees Tahi Bistro & Sushi Bar 4/20/2007

I made a reservation for 8 people at 7pm, we arrived 15 minutes before and we were not seated until 7:15pm. The manager sat us and advised us that they are going to treat us as VIP's due to the misunderstanding. Our waiter was prompt at first but didn't notice that we didn't even have menus. We had to go the hostess and get menus our selves. Then we ordered when the waiter came back, we ordered appatizers, sushi and regular Thai food. Our appatizers came out in about 30 minutes and the waiter advised that they are about 2-5 minutes behind, so we are like no big deal. Every time I needed a refill on my soda I had to flag down the waiter and ask for a refill. Next thing I knew I looked at the clock and it was 8:45pm and we still have not recieved our entrees. We asked for the manager and about 5-10 minutes go by and no manager. So we got up and looked for the manager. We advised the manager about the situation and we stated that we would pay for what we had and that we didn't want to wait any longer for ouir food due to the time was now 8:55pm. There were 2 other tables that had 4 people at each that were sat about 20 minutes after us and they both received their food and one of the tables even paid and left and we still had no food. The manager finaly came with our bill and it was $100.00 they only discounted 10% of our bill. I am very displeased with my whole experince and I can guarntee you that we were not treated as VIP's as promised. Pros: Drinks are good Cons: We never got our food after 2 hours of waiting at the table. more

Not worth it 1/21/2007

I have eaten at many sushi restaurants and this one was by far the worst dining experience I have ever had. We were seated at the sushi bar and took about ten minutes to get any kind of service. Our waitress, who was not very friendly, quickly took our order and didn't seem to care if all our other needs were taken care of. Not once was I given a refill on my drink or for that fact even asked. The sushi chef's were making sexual jokes and comments to other female employee's right infront of us. For the quanity and quality the food is way overpriced. I will never dine here again. Cons: The whole dining experience more

Doesn't live up to hype 12/20/2006

I loved the food at the old location in the main street area of Scottsdale. I have no idea how that location is now. But the Desert Ridge location is not as good as Scottsdale was. The service on Tatum was so-so at best. Even though there was almost no one there, it took forever for someone to take our order (but they were fairly quick bringing the drinks--I think they had seconds in mind). The food was nothing like I remembered in Scottsdale--even though we ordered hot, it was not (spicy or temperature) and very uninspired. I must say below mediocre. And the atmosphere was also not good. I must admit that I will take a pass in future, even if someone else is buying. more
