Sushi with style and swagger. 12/21/2009

In this day and age of supermarket sushi, its refreshing to see the sushi brought back to the mantle of elegance, Prepared with skill similar to when the dish was executed by a master Sushi chef. Every dish presented was not only delicious, but artfully designed. Walking in this establishment, i was met with hip music and an equally hip atmosphere with dim lighting and unique decor. The service was decent with a slight communication problem, but aren't all authentic Sushi spots? I think it only adds to the authenticity of this place. I have brought my girl here several times for that chilled atmosphere, as well as the great food. Come at dark to appreciate the great food, great decor and lighting and set the mood with that special someone. Pros: Authentic and unique Cons: language more

Great place for a Japanese meal with friends and/or family! 12/21/2009

I have been eating sushi for about 20 years and I have found a sushi bar, Makisu, that is as close to Japanese style and quality as I ever have found in the US. This establishment is very gracious with new eaters, serve extremely fresh fish, with varieties that usually are only found in Japan. I would recommend Makisu to anyone. Pros: Good food, Great atmosphere! more

Great sushi! 12/18/2009

Makisu is a great place to go to for a sushi fix. Their sushi is really good, one of the best I've had. The ambience is not bad either, love the decorations. So if you guys are around the Skokie area, hit up Makisu in Village crossing! more

I was hoping for so much more 6/5/2009

Let me just start by saying I was praying this place was going to be good, because I spend so much time in village crossing. I passed by on my way somewhere else and first impressions where its clean and looks cute, I'll go there tomorrow. A friend and I go the next evening in casual wear, didn't seem to matter. We were greeted and seated immediately. THEN, about 15-20 mins go by before out waitress even comes to or table. They were not busy. This place is decent size and there was maybe 4 tables of people there. And plenty of staff. The food came in average time. I ordered a vegetable noodle dish not in the mood for sushi. It was probably just not what I expected, not my taste. I didn't eat. My friend ordered a couple of sushi rolls, all in which he loved and were plated beautifully. However, he had to order a couple rolls because they would not allow him to switch out one roll in the combination he wanted. The combination had three rolls and included soup and salad. He wanted one roll substituted for a roll of the same price. The waitress would not have it. We offered to pay a little extra and still no! So he had to order them all separate, ended up paying more and didn't receive soup or salad. This was absolutely unheard of and ridiculous to me. I really don't think I should return, but I might give it one more shot. Like I said I was really hoping I'd enjoy it here. Pros: Parking lot, plating Cons: Service, prices, more

Neo-Japanese cuisine hits Skokie 3/10/2009

I was passing where my old favorite Chinese restaurant used to be in Village Crossing when I found this place replaced it. My first impression with the decor and feel: very ""earthy"" toned. It felt like I was in a Japanese garden with bamboo and wood designs all over the place with the walls painted with earth toned colors. The music they played was this techno/lounge music which didn't bother me. The greeting, however, not so well. The lady that did not greet me didn't think I belong there in my casual wear, as if I was lost in the mall or something. But I was seated anyway. Even more no-nos followed when the waitress informed me they were out of menus (mind you it was lunch and ONLY about a dozen people in there). So, they gave me their take home menu to look off of. The more disappointed I became when I found out one order of sushi meant 1 piece (and only about a finger-width in size too). Heck, for the price they charged for the various sushi I could get 2 pieces in another place I frequent. The roles are small too, decorative but small. Although, I do give them props for making various ""dragon"" rolls. I also ordered the salmon teriyaki lunch box which didn't come in a traditional bento lunch box. Instead, it is served to you on 1 square plate divided into 4 sections served pretty lukewarm (salad, fried rice, salmon, and vegetables). Their miso soup tasted like know how it should be, but in a very small cup (not a bowl). I asked for sake, but they did not have a liquor license at the time. Needless to say, my first visit didn't go so well. But that doesn't mean I wasn't impressed. I'd say this is a good place for that ""neo-Japanese"" cuisine, high in creativity and decoration. It also looks like it would be a good date place or for small group outings as well, just don't expect a filling meal. But, they have to improve on the quality of food and service (and get that license) or they may be short lived. Pros: Very decorative, Neo-Japanese cuisine, date and small group place Cons: Servings were SMALL, no liquor license, not enough menus, food somewhat blan and lukewarm, coustomer service needs MAJOR improvement more
