Chicken tastes like mothballs... 7/15/2008

...typically a sign that the spices used have gone stale in storage (they absorb mothball odors). Otherwise, cheery staff, cheery prices, and cheery ski-lodge style decor. Limited menu (mostly variations on 4-5 basic dishes) with weak desert options. Slow service for a small restaurant. Pros: Ski-lodge style decor, friendly staff Cons: Stale spices raise questions about food quality more

Little Nepal - great eats! 2/2/2008

Little Nepal made our regular tuesday night with great dinner experience! Its cramping place - just accommodating less than 12 tables - is well compensated by it's warm ambiance and delicious food. The waitresses and patrons were all friendly, which added to our warm experience of the night. The Kukhurako Ledo that my sweet Che ordered, and the Spicy Minced Lamb for myself satisfied not only our appetite but as well our taste buds! The food was such a treat! It was our first visit and it won't be our last.. We highly recommend the place! Pros: thumbs up! Cons: expect a long wait for table, and parking could be tough. more

Great atmosphere, awesome food 10/4/2007

Only went here once but thoroughly enjoyed it. Food was great, service was friendly, the wood paneled walls were nice. It's a good place to go when you're in the mood for something different. Can get a little hot on warm, muggy days, but it's worth the trip up the hill. more

Why Did I Wait So Long! 6/1/2007

I had passed by Little Nepal so many times, but only just recently did I finally make it there for dinner. I had read good reviews about the food and was excited to try it out. Little Nepal totally surpassed my expectations and I can't wait to go back and try it again, especially if there really isn't a corkage fee when bringing my own wine. more

Cute find 7/24/2006

My girlfriend and I went there last week because it was listed in the Entertainment Book we purchased. Not many people around 7pm when we walked in with no reservations but it filled up fast by 7:30. Nice cozy atmosphere. Good service. Food was good except the lentils and vegetable curry did not have much flavor. I do not live there so probably won't go back. Glad I tried it though. Pros: Cozy, Parking, Service Cons: Sides - Lentils and Vegetable Curry more

flavors need a little more oomph 2/16/2006

The atmosphere and service at Little Nepal are great. I felt transported by the staff who were wearing traditional Nepalese attire and by the wall decorations. The staff, who love talking about their native Nepal, are friendly and pleasant. However, the food, while decent, could use a little more oomph. We ordered the sizzling lamb platter and a chicken curry. The lamb was dry and a bit tough and the curry, being on the watery side, just didn't have the punch of Indian and Thai curries. The prices are fair (entrees, including both naan and basmati rice range from $10 to $14). more

Charming change of pace 2/13/2006

Little Nepal is a gem. I love this place- it is very clean and designed with care. The dishes are carefully prepared with love and my guests were impressed. If you haven't been over to Cortland Ave in Bernal- check it out. Pros: Service, Curry, Lamb Cons: Long wait WKND more

Decent Indian Food 1/14/2006

I haven't been to Nepal, so I don't know what Nepalese food is supposed to taste like, but if Little Nepal is any indication, Indian food and Nepalese food are the same thing. I'm not sure why people were waiting out the door for tables when they can get tandoori grilled meat and fish at any other Indian restaurant in the city. Don't get the Momo (which is basically potstickers with tikka masala sauce) - any chinese place will serve up a better dumpling. more

nice little spot, just dont get lamb 11/10/2004

Great service, nice decor, clean and spotless. Everyone at my table thought their meal was great. I ordered tandoori lamb and unfortunately it was really overcooked and dry. But everyone raved about their food so I'm willing to give it another chance. Pros: nice decor, great service, clean Cons: , small place more

Good food, but $7 corkage fee 8/5/2004

The lentil dish was delectable. Service was impeccable, ambience was romantic. However, the Citysearch review states that there is no corkage fee, but there is a $7 fee. Pros: romantic, great bathroom!, good service Cons: crowded more

Average... 5/21/2004

The food was average. They offered mostly Indian dishes which are common to most Indian restaurants. This is not a vegetarian restaurant as the citysearch marks it as. It offers vegetarian dishes like many other restaurants. Ambience was decent though. more

Definitely a destination spot 4/7/2004

First learned of this place from the April 04 issue of San Francisco magazine and decided to try it, never having had cuisine from Nepal before. It was a great experience, from our friendly wait staff to the delicious food. The curry made with tandoori chicken was so good, we could've licked the bowl it came in and ordered another! Only somewhat down side: sitting very close to the next table and hearing their conversations (and having yours heard as well), but that's pretty typical of small neighborhood restaurants. Make the trip to Bernal Hts. and eat here! Pros: Delicious food, Friendly wait staff, Inexpensive Cons: , So-so parking, Loud more

Really good Nepalese Food 1/15/2004

Located at the end of cortland Street. This has become one of my favourite restaurant. The food, the tradition, and the ambiance is great. more

My FAVORITE restaurant 12/30/2003

This is absolutely my favorite restaraunt in the city. The service is so warm and friendly and the place is so clean and quaint. My favorite dish is the tofu tandori, with a sauce that I cannot truly explain to give it any justice, but is to die for. Sort of creamy, with spices that are almost sweet. YUMM. It does get crowded on the weekends, and there isn't a good place to wait. But make reservations or go on a weekday and it's a snap! Pros: Inexpensive, Food is great, Kind service Cons: Few tables, Closed on Monday more

they lie about the wait 10/7/2003

After being told the wait would be a specific 7 to 8 minutes (not 78 minutes - we asked), we waited over 50 minutes! As the wait progressed, and we inquired, the owner/host would say things like, ""oh, it's about 3-4 more minutes."" At that point they showed us a table for a party of 5, where three people would sit on one side and two on either end. (Meaning one long side of the rectangle would be empty and three people would be facing no one.) Of course this was a ridiculous seating arrangement, and neither us or the 6 top after us chose to sit there. When we explained our feelings, the owner/host said rudely, ""Ok, then wait."" I would have left had we not waited 1 hour at that point. They made NO apology, NO compensation and didn't even offer us a free appetizer while waiting. Pros: Good food, inexpensive Cons: inaccurate wait time, tiny more

Great start-up 6/10/2003

The service was a little disorganised, but that's not hard to expect from a place that's only been open for a couple of weeks. The food was really good and overall I enjoyed the experience. Go there--you'll have a good night out and it will help them get their business off the ground. Pros: vegetarian options, clean and new, friendly service Cons: disorganised service, a bit crowded more

The best Bernal experience 6/10/2003

We were 4 people on Saturday night and waited patiently for 30 minutes as we studied the menu. We had tandoori chicken and lamb plus shrimp in curry along with those fabulous momo-dumplings and spinach stir fried with onions. The rice and naan included in the meal were fresh and delectable. The service was great too. In between mouthfuls we all praised the food and swore to go back again and again. We now have their menu for delivery in the Bernal Heights area. Too bad this will really have people discovering the neighborhood. more

Real Find 5/23/2003

The Little Nepal restaurant will have its tables booked solid indefinitely as soon as people discover its tandoori chicken curry (Kukhurako Ledo), in which already excellent tandoori chicken is taken to the next stratosphere with a light but creamy and beautifully spiced, perfectly balanced sauce. Paired with competitive naan at competitive price, this dish is a candidate for--no kidding--the best ethnic dish in San Francisco, and most flavor for dollar. It competes favorably with, for instance, the duck curry at Thep Phanom, the famous lamb and chicken curries at Shalimar, and the Achar Ghost at Alhamra (all must-tastes for the SF foodie). The wine list is pitiful, and should be reworked for more appropriate choices (e.g. German/Austrian Rieslings) but they have the important beers (e.g. Taj Mahal, Flying Horse). $5 corkage forgives the poor list. Pros: Charming, Tasty, Bernal! Cons: Packed, Hits and Misses, Poor Wines more
