Cool place but overpriced mediocre food 7/11/2009

I have been wanting to check out Liberty bar since I moved here six weeks ago. I ordered a salad and my fiance ordered a tenderloin dish. My salad was 14.00 and was the size of a small dinner plate. I was shocked. The chicken was low quality meat, fatty and chewy. I ordered a side of chicken, which the server had an attitude problem with. I took a bite in the chicken and it went crunch in my mouth. The breast was all fat and gristle. I sent it back telling the waiter I could not eat it. When we got the bill he charged me for it! I asked him to remove the charge and he said ""ill see what I can do but I cant promise anything."" That made me furious. He never once said he was sorry for my meal. He acted like a snob. Its a cool place but it is no Ruth Chris. I am not sure where the attitude came in. I will NEVER go back here again. Pros: Cool Venue for drinks Cons: Overpriced food, small proportions, waiters are snobby more

Very disappointed with food and service 3/9/2008

This place use to be GREAT. I have been here twice in the last month and it has gone from bad to worse. Even the bread was not as good as usual. Service was very slow and server seemed very inexperienced. I just read in newspaper owner was planning to open a new restaurant closer to downtown but seems they have their homework to do on this home front. Very snobby and unpleasant atmosphere. Drinks were enjoyable though along with the company of good friends I met for the evening. We always enjoy the slanted floors. I'll give it one more chance but probably not for at least another month and hope it's much better. Cons: Service terrible more

Amazing Food! 1/27/2008

Liberty Bar is an amazing restaurant with amazing food. I go to Liberty Bar at least once a week because of how wonderful it is. The waiters are down to earth and very friendly. I know they love the place as much as I do because if they aren't there waiting they are eating! I've tried almost everything on the menu and the Roasted Leg of Lamb sandwich is my favorite. The Zucchini sandwich with the Eggplant Puree is also wonderful. They also have daily lunch specials and if your lucky enough to go on a day they have their famous Meat Loaf you will not be disappointed. I also go for brunch often because of the incredible omelets. You can choose to have fillings from green peppers and cream cheese to roasted lamb and asparagus. Be sure to get a mimosa with you brunch, they use fresh squeezed orange juice and top of the line champagne. You have to save room for desert. The bread pudding is indescribably delicious. I lived in New Orleans for five years and I actually have to say that Liberty Bar's bread pudding is one of the best I've tried. Also the lime chess pie is delectable especially if you love key lime pie. This restaurant is for foodies and people who appreciate flavor and originality. more

What in the world is the hype about? Its not there. 10/30/2007

It was just OK. I went after much hype from co-workers and friends and it was just ok. The seating was prompt though. We sat down ordered drinks, they finally came and it took 20 minutes for the waiter to come back to take our order. \r \r We ordered appetizers, the cheese plate and the Mission figs. They sounded wonderful on the menu. The mission figs were great but the cheese plate??? i could have done better at home with presentation. It was dinky cheese sticks with dried cranberries. The almonds that came with it were the only good thing. It was disappointing. \r \r Another 20 minutes passes when we have to CALL the waiter to take our dinner order. I had the Strip Steak. Maybe its not a steak place because it was really stringy. The Spinach side dish that came with is was GREAT. The steak was not. \r \r I really didnt mind that the waiter took forever to ask us for our order...but at least refill our water glasses. We had to call the waiter a couple of times to get our glasses refilled. The service was just not well that night. The bread everyone raves about is average. I hate to say that better bread is served at chain resturants. \r \r Dessert time: We all order our desserts. Everyone receives their dessert but me. I figure that the waiter's helper is going back to retrieve it since she was carrying 2 desserts the first time. No. 5 minutes later nothing. We had to CALL the waiter AGAIN to tell him that the girl didnt bring my dessert. He brought it right out and it was cold. I had the bread pudding. It was dry and cold. Another dissapointment. Some friends had the apple pie and the mexican chocolate ice cream which they said was good. \r \r All in all, its just an ok place with below average service and overpriced food. I really wanted to like this cool establishment. But even the ambience the place oozes is not worth it. Pros: the mission figs Cons: bad service! more

EVERYTHING WAS DELISH!!! Great place for brunch on Sundays. Sandwiches are to die for. I do plan on going back. Pros: Bar & restaurant Cons: Parking more

Highly Recommend ***** 4/3/2007

WOW!! What a fantastic building. I enjoyed every minute of our visit. The garlic pork chops were absolutely devine and topped off with the bread pudding absolutely perfecto--oh did I mention the homemade bread.\r A good tip is come extremely hungry so you may fully enjoy. We just moved to S.A. town but heard about this establishment in Phoenix as a real must do. We have definitely put it on our favorite restaurants list. The building is absolutely phenomenal almost like a fun house. We took plenty of pictures. Thanks for a wonderful dining experience. Pros: Fantastic food, ambiece and service. Love this building more

Have to do it at least once! 3/26/2007

I am new to the San Antonio area, heck to Texas, but I am always interested in trying out things at least once. That is my opinion to anyone reading these reviews. You can not pass up an opportunity to dine in a very interesting building something with history something that?s ?Outside the Box?. I visited Liberty Bar with my Husband and two friends on an Sunday afternoon. We arrived just before the early dinner crowd. We started off with the Calamari Appetizer (good portion for four) I had the Hibiscus tea which I do recommend if you like ginger. The Meals at our table varied I had the Lamb Rolls; they were a little overcooked but still delicious. My husband had the Cordorniz special which he claimed was very tasty and tender, apparently also finger licking good, and the third plate was a Alfredo pasta with crawfish cream sauce everything was delicious, served at the right temperature, and with a smile. I would honestly recommend you try it at least once. The building does throw off your sense of balance, but it really is part of the whole experience. more

Great Food and Great Building 3/8/2007

After reading some of these reviews I had to sit down and write something positive--sometimes I think people love to complain in general and to the person who made a comment about the waiter not speaking good English--wake up it's San Antonio--take a good look around you. I too have been eating at this establishment for many years as all of my family has too and we have had nothing but wonderful service and delicious food and as for the building well that is the main attraction that keeps us coming back--what an absolute great conversation piece. The home made bread, bread pudding and garlic pork chops are some of our favorites. We have also enjoyed many a dailey special. Thanks LB for giving us so much enjoyment and keep the good food coming. We always bring out of town guests over for a bite and they always leave with good memories. more

No longer recommended 2/10/2007

We first ate at this restaurant about five years ago and loved it. Since then, we have been back several times and it seems as if the food and the service have been progressively worse. Today was the worst ever and I doubt we will be returning. The food was barely passable - my chick pea salad tasted like a can of chick peas had been dumped straight out of the can, my husband's lamb burger was tasteless, and the potato salad that came with my daughter's sandwich was dry enough to choke on.\r To add insult to injury, the waiter barely spoke English, was unable to provide us with any suggestions or recommendations, did not return to the table even once after he had served our meal, and honestly did not look very clean.\r This is no longer a restaurant we would recommend to anyone looking for tasty food and/or good service. Cons: Tasteless food, bad service more

Ehh, it's aiight 1/12/2007

I had read all these reviews for this place and was totally excited to try it. We had a fun and knowledgable server and he helped me pick out a beef potato and carrot dish for my 1yr old son which he LOVED. My mom and sister both had salads they enjoyed. I had a portabella sandwich that i wouldnt really reccomend, wish i'd gone with the apple, hazelnut and goat cheese salad my sis had. My dad had a chipolte shrimp pasta he enjoyed and the chocolate cake was nothing too special. Overall i thought it was only average, not sure what the huge hype is about!!!! Pros: interesting menu, good bread Cons: Food doesnt live up to hype or price!! more

Disappointing at best 9/9/2006

With such a quirky menu and snooty servers, I was really expecting an unusual and delicious meal. While my dining companions ordered steaks and seafood, I ordered from the nightly special menu - spinach linguine with anchiote chicken. Big mistake! The pasta, while homemade, merely served as a sponge to soak up the grease from the chicken. As my dinner-mates cooed over their steaks and roasted tomatoes, I picked at my oily green mess. As other reviewers mentioned, their homemade bread is quite good, but not worth going back for. If I want mediocre food with can't-be-bothered service - I'll stick with McDonalds.\r \r Also, be warned - your waiter will sneer and/or laugh at you should you think to ask for diet soda or ranch dressing! Pros: Freshly baked bread Cons: Snooty servers & greasy grub more

They do not want your business 12/6/2005

Liberty Bar has been a favorite spot to take customers to dinner for several years. We travel to San Antonio every few months and this is our #1 place to go. This time, however, I tried to make a reservation for a larger group and I was turned down. I was told by the manager that we would take up 5 tables in the dining room and he could not give up that many tables because he would loose business. This does not really make sense, given that we weren't expecting to eat for free! Just my opinion, but I would rather have a full dining room than a bunch of empty tables! I won't return to a place that does not want repeat business and I will no longer recommend this restaurant. Pros: good menu Cons: poor management, slow service, parking more

A Perennial Favorite 1/18/2005

The building looks ramshackle, but it's solid--and so is the food. In fact, this has been one of my (and my family's) favorite San Antonio restaurants for years. There's always a wait, precisely because the food is so good. My favorites are the garlic pork chops and the wild boar sausage, but I don't know anyone who's gone away disappointed. Try the buttermilk pie or the geranium cream! They don't take reservations, but apparently if you call ahead, you move to the top of the list once you're there. Pros: Food, Quality more

Check it out... 12/3/2004

Great place, great atmosphere and a nice friendly crowd. The staff there are friendly and accomodating. The food is yummy!!! My husband loves it - one of his favorite spots to eat. Highly recommend this place!!! more

great funky place 10/25/2002

Innovative, yummy food; friendly folks; funky building. Sometimes the dishes are a bit too heavy, but mostly they come up with some great ideas, like figs and cheese. Home-made bread is the best! more

Give me Liberty! 7/23/2002

THe BEST ham and cheese sandwich -(opt for the sourdough) piled high with swiss cheese and a substantial ham steak more

Bring your marbles ... 5/15/2002

This is where you'll find me when the USDA declares bread and dessert a balanced meal. It's what Liberty does best. Pros: weird floor Cons: a little pricey more
