Best sushi in the Portland area! 5/29/2009

In Alaska, we had a favorite sushi place we always went to. Moving from Alaska to Portland, my boyfriend & I tried place after place, not able to find a good sushi place that came even close to our favorite back in AK. Until we found Le Hana! The food is great, I like the idea of French-Japanese fusion. The presentation is way cool, and you won't find their rolls anywhere else. I highly recommend this restaurant! Pros: Creative sushi rolls, friendly & fast service, nice ambience Cons: Nothing at all! more

Great Food and Excellent Waiter 5/11/2009

We went here on Mother's Day with my wife and my 9 month old sond. \r I feel what makes a great restaurant isn't always excellent, excellent food (it helps of course) but it's the individual as your waiter that represents the restaurant. It's worth going here just to experience the level of excellent service you can receive from Mike. He is well informed and educated about the food and the different Sake. He will even know the origin of the food, Sake and history behind it. He is very courteous, helpful and not hesitant to make suggestions. And more important not offended if you don't agree with his suggestions. \r The food was also GREAT and exactly as Mike described it would be. So...excellent service and food made for a great dinner. Not to mention our son was very restless and unhappy but Mike and the staff was so gracious and patient with our son.\r The owners of this resaurant should REALIZE and honorably COMMEND Mike on what a great employee they have and the excellent representation of their establishment he gives to Le Hana. Le Hana and Mike, in my opinion far exceeds the other 5 star and highly regarded waiter's at other restaurants we have been to. Ask for Mike and he will surely make it a pleasant dinner for you. Pros: Mike the Waiter Cons: Secluded Area more

CLOSED! 8/11/2008

May, 2010 - CLOSED . . . CLOSED . . . CLOSED. So sad. :-( Le Hana's is no longer open in Hillsboro. July 16, 2009 - Le Hana has a fabulous special right now that could end any time, so you might want to call and check. THE DEAL: Buy a drink (doesn't have to be alcoholic) and your bill is 50% OFF!! They have new rolls they are debuting as well. Le Hana's is our favorite sushi restaurant anywhere! The sushi is always amazingly consistent and the wait staff is always attentive and kind. The edamame and miso soup before the meal is wonderful. The presentation of the sushi makes the experience just that much better. Try to Tuna Avocado Tower. They offer tons of interesting meals for those who aren't sushi fans as well from steak to salmon with a Japanese flair. Mike is definitely what keeps us coming back - he is excellent! more

Great sushi rolls, service not good. 7/29/2008

7/25/08 Dinner 6PM. Not to crowded. Ordered drinks and appetizers and main course. Took forever to get drinks & appetizers. Don't order the Capresi wraps, bland and very messy. Why waste your appetite on these! Also not a place to order mixed drinks - very light on the alchohol. Finally get drinks and appetizers and 30 seconds later our entrees were set down on the table. I hate that! Would like a little time between courses. All the rolls and sushi we ordered were just wonderfull. Avocado roll was great as well as the unagi roll. Miso soup came with the meal but we never got it until we tracked down the waitress half way thru our meal to bring the soup. Sevice needs to to pick up - more attentive I guess - but the food was very good. Pros: Good Sushi Cons: Poor service more

Absolutely Delicious Food!!! 6/17/2008

My husband and I have been going to La Hana since it opened its Hillsboro location. In fact, we are regulars and you will most likely see us dining there every Saturday afternoon. We do not consider ourselves creatures of habit and like to venture out to other places, but honestly we are disappointed everytime we do. This is why we keep coming back to Le Hana. Personally I love their sushi and am addicted to their Shrimp & Goat Cheese Gyoza. Try the La Hana rolls -- delicious!! The staff is wonderful and know our favorite table. I'm shocked that there are so many write-ups about slow service, because I seriously doubt anyone frequents La Hana as much as we do and we have NEVER had poor service. On occasion they may be slower than usual, but its not slow enough to be dinged for it. more

wouldn't go back on my own, but if invited would stick to the sushi 5/10/2008

I live in portland, so finding the Hillsboro location was a bit difficult and the online map is misleading. I should know better if they have to put on their website description that they're ""high end"" - if you have to say it, then you're not. Accoustics did nothing but amplify the cackling table nearby even though our party of 8 out numbered them. Service was prompt enough. We just bought the G sake - so a given decent bottle, but not refrigerated and the flasks with ice compartment, while interesting I guess, don't quite chill the sake and water dumps out when it melts. the Japanese part of this so called 'fusion' was good - the French part, not so much. Good/great: nigiri (halibut amazing), Grand Fleur roll, spicy watermelon soup, gorgonzola cheesecake; Mediocre: tuna tower, cajun ahi, spicy hand rolls; Poorly executed: over-cooked mahi mahi in butternut squash bisque, pork with apple fritters (fritters were ok, but they used the batter to stuff the pork -- grainy and too sweet), pork rolls , fried rice with veg-all. ew. \r \r While it was fine, I'm not sure the vision is being accomplished. Perhaps they're wary of the already over-saturated sushi market and thought throwing French in there would bring it some appeal. I don't know. For me, I would not go back on my own accord, and if invited, I'd stick to the sushi. Pros: sushi, gorgonzola cheesecake Cons: everything else is mediocre at best more

Waited an hour for our food 4/6/2008

First, let me say that this was some of the best sushi I have had in town. The La Hana roll is to die for! That alone is the reason I'm considering going back. The Tokyo Ice Tea did just what the menu said it would - knocked me off my feet! And also but me in a good enough mood not to leave the restaurant. On this night, my husband and I were going to see the Cirque du Soleil show; we gave ourselves an hour and a half for dinner and drinks, which under any other circumstances is plenty of time. Our food at La Hana took over an hour. My sushi roll came 20 minutes before my husbands stuffed pork. They said the pork took longer to cook, but I've grilled pork...it does not take an hour to cook, not even close. Besides, his pork was completely uncooked on one end. It's hard for me to recommend this restaurant because I don't think you should ever wait over an hour for your food and you should be able to dine together (get your food at the same time). Time after time, my husband and I watched people walk out in a huff before they their food arrived, so I know we weren't alone in our experience. We watched people finish their drinks, complain to their waiters, and go. Nothing we received was at a discount or on the house, but it should have been. Pros: OK street parking Cons: terrible service, long waits for food more

SLOOOOOOOOOOOOWEST SERVICE EVER 3/5/2008

It couldn't GET any slower than this. Employees are very freindly and the food isn't even bad. You just wait forever to get it. Have tried this place 3 times just to make sure I wasn't jumping to conclusions but unfortunately it was slow every time.... Pros: Good location, plenty of parking, no kids, friendly people Cons: Slow service - over 40 minutes to get our food more

worst i've had 2/24/2008

i wasnt going to give any stars minus 5 stars the fish is not fresh iwas staying at the hotel in marriot and it was reccomended to go to lahana so we went was not seated immedeatley. the food was horrible so left as fast as possible more

best happy hour 12/9/2007

my boyfriend found this place one night... we decided to try it out for happy hour.. SO GOOD! the sushi is great, the happy hour prices are great... you can fill up for two people on about $20. the prices for regular dinner menu are a little pricey, but if you like sushi it is worth it. they have a unique menu that i like because it is not the same old same old that everyone else is serving. they have a nice drink menu and the inside is beautiful. they have a nice bar and an upstairs room for i guess what you could call the ""high rollers"" of sushi. we love making it there for happy hour. the service is great, they are really friendly.. except for who i think is the owner he is kind of intimidating.. anyways. we love it. happy hour :) Pros: sushi, happy hour, service, unique menu Cons: pricey if not going to happy hour more

You call this sushi 10/9/2007

Ok I have to say their sake sampler is pretty good, the fish not so much. The ""cook"" does not know how to cut their fish one piece actually had a strip of scales still on it which after that point realized the taco bell across the parking lot would be better. If you want sushi Sushi & Maki and Syun is a million times better. Not worth a trip or $4.99 which is the price of a meal at taco bell. Pros: Taco Bell is across the parking lot Cons: Everything else minus the sake and Taco Bell more

Pretty good food...Pretty bad service 10/9/2007

My wife and I went out with another couple for a 5 year anniversary dinner for both of us.\r The restaurant, located in the new South waterfront area of the city was a nice looking establishment.\r The menu had many choices and the drinks looked good...and tasted good as well. The problem came when the 4 drinks we ordered took about 1/2-3/4 hour before the last of the drinks was served. When asked why our waiter told us there was a MUCH bigger order in front of ours. The only problem with this excuse was that there were no more than 2 other parties in the restaurant...(who were already served). Then they said it was because the fruit needed to defrost...hmmm...ok...I do know my way around drinks and that's about as lame of an excuse as I've heard....\r ON TO THE MEAL. It was good...not great, but good.\r The same slow response to the meal and the check occured as well. We all thought, ""Wow. What would happen on a busy night?""\r Now don't get me wrong. We had a great evening. However I would say it was the company of great friends and my beautiful wife that made that happen...not so much Le Hana.\r Maybe we'll try again in a year or so...after they polish it up a bit (a lot). Pros: sushi was good, menu options Cons: SERVICE,service, service more

Too ""upscale"" for what you get 9/11/2007

We were excited to see a new Japanese restaurant opening up right around the corner from my work. Three of us went to the restaurant for lunch and were disappointed. 100% of all the Japanese restaurants I've ever gone to, which is a lot, never have I been charged for tea. Usually tea and water is free and it wasn't anything special, just a normal green tea. Like I saw in another feedback, we ordered sushi, including the california roll. Was shocked to see fake crab in the roll, especially for the price. I think LeHana is an over priced Japanese restaurant that is nothing special. The three of us said, we'd never go back again. Yes the atmosphere is wonderful, but we're not willing to pay that much above and beyond for green tea and fake crab. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Nickel and Diming for everything including tea, fake crab more

Wow. They do their thing from start to finish... 9/8/2007

My wife and I dined at the new location near the new high rise buildings on the North end of John's Landing at the end of the OHSU tram. It says exquisite service on the sign right when you you walk in, and that was what we got. The food was delicious. I noticed they had non-specialty rolls at decent prices, $5 for spicy tuna, california rolls and the like, of which 2 could probably fill somebody up; the budget minded could get away with spending $15 -$ 20 plus tip. However, their better dishes like the Hamachi Fusion and Grand Fleur that I got were $15 each, but EXQUISITE.\r \r Back to the service portion. I noticed something good right away with the atmosphere, which then continued with the hostess, the waiter and the complimentary edamame. The server was willing to ask about any substitiution or information we didn't have and was attentive at the right moments. I tried the Sake sampler: the WAKATAKE ONIKOROSHI was a PERFECT compliment to the Hamachi Fusion - a slightly sour but extremely fruity Sake.\r \r What I guessed, and then confirmed by talking to one of the partner owners, was that the tips are shared between hostess, chef, and server - that policy alone pays off as everybody is of one mind about service - exquisite. Don't miss the hawaiian sushi chef either (didn't catch his name) but he's funny - we had to refuse his offer for pizza, however. Don't miss Le Hana. more

Great Restaurant with one tiny exception 9/5/2007

La Hana continues to be one of my very favorite restaurants. The interior is gorgeous, the staff is exceptional and the food is consistently excellent. Unfortunately, the watermelon soup now contains fake crab, instead of the previous fresh crab. The mound of Krab in the soup was gross, while the cold watermelon soup was fabulous. My partner had the lamb again, and it was just amazing, done perfectly with right on seasoning. My halibut katsu was flaky and delicious, the salad was fresh with a sweet vinagrette and the fried rice divine. So, keep it up La Hana, but bring back the real crab and toss the fake stuff. Pros: Consistently great food, classy interior, professional staff Cons: Fake crab more

The unexpected restaurant 8/31/2007

This restaurant is wonderful. I have been there numerous amount of times. Each time I go back with my boyfriend, they greet us as though we are friends they have such friendly environment. I always get the bento, the chicken bento is such a great deal I love it.and he gets the steak. You have to try the teriyaki chicken that comes with the bento it so GOOD. I rarely leave left overs. There was a time we went and the steak was a over cooked. we weren't planning to say anything until the host came by and asked, all we did was mention to her that it was over cooked. but not to worry, she insisted and called the manager. When the manager came she apologized and had it recooked. Even though we had to wait a bit, the hostess and the manager kept making sure everything was good. Since then the manager and host know us by name. I know if anything were to go wrong with this restaurant that host and manager will always take care of us. Pros: food, service, decor more

Best Japanese, great customer service, romantic 8/12/2007

I have dined at this bistro many times and have nearly sampled everything on the menu! The food is wonderful. The staff is super and really understands the japanese cusine and culture. The sushi is fresh and wonderfully presented as well as their many fantastic entrees. There are so many choices even the non sushi eater will enjoy this beautifully decorated cafe. My favorite is the La Hana Bento which comes with miso soup, tempura vegatables and shrimp, four servings of cali roll, huge serving of plum chicken, rice, and a lovely mixed green salad. All for $15 what a deal! Don't even think about skipping dessert! I can't wait to try their two new resturants I'm sure it will be great! Joanne, the manager, is the nicest person and greets all customers warmly. You will love it! Pros: service, good food, warm staff more

Much more than expected 8/10/2007

Fresh, Creative, Delicious Sushi 6/19/2007

We found our new go-to sushi spot! We went here on a slow Sunday afternoon (we were practically the only ones in the place) and found everything to be top-notch. \r \r I love the sleek decor and the food was fantastic. We had the Le Hana specialty roll (highly recommended!) and several other rolls/nigiri. They have a lot of really interesting specialty rolls on the menu; combinations that I haven't seen anywhere else and can't wait to try.\r \r I had a glass of wine that I thought was a bit pricey at $10, but when it arrived at the table it was practically a half bottle in a huge glass (on second look, the menu does state that they are 10-oz. pours, which are huge by restaurant standards)!\r \r Everything was fresh and delicious and the service was great. We will have to go there when they're a bit busier to see if that holds true, but overall this was a great experience. We'll be back again and again. Pros: Creative Rolls, Fresh Fish Cons: A bit off the beaten path (like another reviewer said, it's behind Taco Bell!) more

Best sushi in town 4/1/2007

This has become our favorite place to go for sushi. My husband and I go there at least once a week now. We used to be Mio regulars (still love that place too... ) but there's something about Le Hana that is just spectacular. Everytime we've been in there, the service has been spectacular, warm, friendly and perfect on timing. We went there for Valentine's Day and ordered the tasting menu... oh my goodness!!! What a menu it was! We started with the Spicy Tuna appetizer, followed by the soup, followed by the assorted sushi plate, followed by a choice of the lamb chops (absolutely the best lamb chops in town) or Halibut. Then there was dessert. The meal was unforgettable. The owners are warm and friendly and as I said before, we've loved this place since it opened. You have to try it. Pros: Terrific sushi, varied menu - vegetarians welcome, great staff Cons: hard to find since it's behind Taco Bell and pretty unassuming more
