the worst place i have ever been. from the bed bugs to the crack heads I spent every minute away from that place that I could. I'd rather stay in the street.

I have been advocating for a friend of mine who recently left Lakeside after a 2 1/2 year stint there and I can assure you that he couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. He claims the room there was just okay, the food was atrocious, the staff was only semi-helpful, and if he ever had anything to say that could be deemed ""angry"", he was threatened with hospitalization. \r \r Adult homes in general have a bad reputation, but I think something needs to be done to change this trend. Especially since the mental health community has never had the love or the respect it has needed. My friend had a case worker named Michelle (his social worker, I believe) who would not answer my questions when I got to the root of my friend's complaints and said she would not take my calls anymore and hung up on me. From what I hear, the owner, Avi, and his wife, run the place. Or is it Avi's mother? Apparently, Avi's mother, who owns the place, supposedly, drives a nice Mercedes Benz or a BMW and most of the residents are treated as animals, cattle, etc. And, yes, they are extremely over-medicated. But overmedicating is what American healthcare is good at, particularly in the mental health field, mainly and particularly because of the corruption and cronyism of the pharmaceutical industry and the insanity of things like the FDA, our idiot politicians, and so on. \r \r What I recommend people do is to contact their local politicians, the attorney general, and any inspector general they can of any and all agencies that can affect crappy, useless adult homes that are not really serving residents the way they could. Specifically, people here and anyone concerned should contact the Office of Mental Health - try to get through to Commissioner Michael Hogan's office, if possible. Let them know the situation at Lakeside and anywhere else. \r \r I, for one, like many others, am committed to there being a sea change in the way people recovering from mental illness have resources that don't work - and haven't had what they needed in pretty much all of recorded history. Lakeside deserves to be audited and closely examined. Small claims is next for my friend - time to sue to get some money back that Lakeside is illegally holding onto (they forced him to sign away a whole month of Social Security when he didn't even have money to eat). \r \r Yes, it's that bad at Lakeside Manor. more

@ Debbie K; I too used to work there in the 90s. I actually met my x-wife there, we divorced in 2007. She was a receptionist there in 1993, (chiquitamelanie), yes that same one who wrote above. The problem with Lakeside Manor is that ZC and Sandy Lustig, (not sure if the have passed it to their daughter and son-in-law yet), do not pay well and when the pay is minimal, you don't attract the best people. When good people do come, they don't stay. I really didn't stay long at Lakeside and for the most part was treated with respect by most. For me only 1 good thing came from being there was I had a nice 14 year run with my ex, (I don't hate her), I can see how the place could be run down because they do not like to spend money on Lakeside Manor. more

chiquitamelanie, the 90s were a long time ago...I just left my job there and I can tell you if things were good then, they are no longer so. In 2008 the Staten Island Advance published an article which you can find a link to on google which interviewed the neighbors of Lakeside Manor. The phrase out of control was used in the title. I dont know who owned it back in the 90s, but it is run by the Lustig family now. The place does have bed bugs and the staff is very callous in there treatment of the residents. The wallpaper is peeling from the walls in areas it does exist and the ceiling tiles have holes in them. I functioned as a social worker there and very many of the residents desperately wanted out. The residents have very long list of medications on there medication sheets and are threatened with being sent to the hospital if they do anything disruptive. The administrator is a bully. more

I worked for Lakeside Manor on and off during the 90's assuming different positions. Avoid - Dump - Poor Supervision 10/14/2008

This place is a pillar on the community of Silver Lake, the facility has garbage on the grounds, no maintetnace has taking place, the staff lacks empathy in handeling the patients and community, the patients or over medicated (known as the walking dead), they pan handle in the neighborhood, drink alchol on the grounds and are under poor managment with little to no supervision. Do a serach on the facility and discover the many law suits against the owners / president of this Private Property for Adult Housing. Pros: Silver Lake Cons: Ownership, Care, cliental more
