We went to this place a couple of weeks ago and it was excellent, I had the Jambalaya and then had the Bread Pudding for desert. We just went back on Friday night and they are no...

Lagniappe is gone. Closed. It's something else now.................. ........................ .............................

Where's the spice? 8/7/2006

I grew up in Louisiana and the food was/is so great because of the spices. I've tried two dishes at Lagniappe and have been disappointed. The presentation is good, but there simply is no seasoning on the food...I miss home. Pros: The customer service was great! Cons: The food was pricey for lunch, ie: $10 for a sandwich and there was no cajun flavor. more

Authentic Louisiana Food! 8/7/2006

Lagniappe is the real deal, ladies and gentlemen. I was born and raised in Cajun Country Southern Louisiana. I lived in New Orleans for 12 years. Upon moving to Portland in 2000, i was extremely disappointed in the few ""New Orleans Style"" restaurants that i tried. Well, that all changed when Madison opened Lagniappe. Now, when i feel a little homesick, all i have to do is grab a shrimp & oyster po'boy. more

Good poor boys 7/9/2006

My wife is a Cajun girl and I have been very fortunate to eat many true authentic in the Bayou classic meals - so we are tough critics when someone slaps on ""Cajun, Creole, or Southern"" to their place in the NW. more

Almost like taking a trip to the Gulf Coast. 4/26/2006

If you have the hankering for a po' boy this is the only place in Portland you can go. After returning from a trip from the Gulf Coast, I was ready to move to Mississippi just for the po' boys alone now, I can get the real deal here in Portland. I've only had the shrimp Po' Boy so, I can't comment on the rest but, it's dead on... the reason the po' boys are so authenthic is because the owner grew up on the Gulf Coast. Don't kid yourself with these other so-called ""Cajun"" restaurants, just go to Lagniappe! Pros: Excellent Food, Friendly Service more

Oyster Po' Boy 3/16/2006

This sandwich is a piece of heaven. A must try. Pros: Food, Location Cons: Ambience, Decor more

I found a keeper! 12/17/2005

Two words -- absolutely delicious. After my first bite, I was amazed that this restaurant wasnt filled to capacity! My husband had the catfish dinner and I had the shrimp po boy. The catfish and shrimp were lightly battered and fried to perfection. The flavor made my tastebuds dance a jig. The po boy could have served two -- yes, it was that big. The coleslaw had just enough zing to be interesting. Hush puppies were hearty -- crispy brown on the outside and tender and tasty inside. My husband enjoyed the collard greens. As the previous reviewer indicated, the interior decor is lacking and they dont serve any welcoming snacks or beignets. My comment: THEY DONT NEED TO. With food as good as they serve at Lagniappe, who cares about the decor. If youre looking for a scrumptious, hearty southern meal, look no farther. Pros: Darn good food more

HA HA! 10/31/2005

ok. It CRACKS ME UP call things like ""Beef Briskit"" cajun. How bout we serve up some ""cajun matzo ball soup"" too? more

Lagniappe (a little something extra) was Lacking 10/7/2005

Visited new Alberta location. Little exterior signage. Former Mexican/Italian restaurant? Too upscale for neighborhood, until gentrification. Hopefully settling in may improve ambiance. Crude interior paintjob in MardiGras colors, no other decor. Is it an upscale French Quarter courtyard or a workingman's oyster shack? Jury's still out. Needs plants, decor to help draw attention away from sketchy neighborhood outside. Prominent bar, but no drinks menu. Delightful Popcorn Crawfish appetizer! Impressive Oyster Poboy, good Collard Greens, lackluster Pulled Pork. Many ""extras"" lacking. Need jazz music, sweet tea, multiple hot sauces, Louisiana beers! Asked for green Tabasco; waiter never heard of it, pointed to a cheap red sauce from NewOrleans on every table. Where's the lagniappe? No welcoming appetizer, no pecan pralines or beignets afterward? Lagniappe implies generous, warm Southern hospitality. Overall, felt like chef is passionate about Louisiana food, but maybe never been there himself. Pros: Great potential, Adequate Menu Options, Large Portions Cons: Poor Ambiance, Uninspired Overall, No Lagniappes! more

TRUE southern food! NOW AT 20TH and ALBERTA!!! 8/12/2005

Being a southern boy, born and raised, I can assure you this is the real deal. Madison is in the kitchen for a reason, to serve you up some authentic New Orleans grub. Take the trek down Broadway and bring your appetite, those po-boys are big! Pros: Specials Rock!, Friendly, Knowledgeable Servers more

Real Southern Food 9/24/2004

My wife and I both grew up in the South, and have been sorely disappointed by the other Southern food in Portland. The hush puppies are right on, the cole slaw is a perfect mix of sweet and spicy, and the catfish was the closest I have had to home. Even the corn bread wasnt overly sweet! A tomatoes and mustard based BBQ sauces and bunch of traditional Louisiana and contemporary hot sauces are available. Beer selection is limited, but at least its Rip Curl or Fat Tire. We sat outside and were pleasantly surprised by Broadway not being too loud. I never thought I would have tasty Jambalaya like that this far from the Mississippi. I havent tried the Po boy yet, but it looked huge. Based on the dishes I had, I dont see how any of the food can miss. Everything we had was delicious. Pros: Great Food, Hush puppies baby!, Hot Sauces Cons: , Closed Sunday more

THIS IS SOUTHERN FOOD AT ITS BEST 9/10/2004

Lagniappe has the best southern food in Portland, period! Madison makes a mean muffaletta and his crawfish etouffe is the best I've had since leaving NO. Everything on the menu is superb except maybe the ""bread"" pudding. I think it qualifies as a custard myself. Try the roast beef po'boy (dressed) and the andouille sausage and smoked chicken gumbo for a real soul experience. Maddy, you are the roux master! Pros: fresh ingredients, music, top-notch chef more

dingodulce 8/16/2004

This is it..this is the real deal. Having moved here from New Orleans, I've really been disappointed my most of the restaurants in Portland that serve ""southern"" food. Laignappe is authentic and absolutely delicious. Their jambalaya is some of the best I've ever had-here or in New Orleans! The shrimp and oyster po boys are heaven on earth!! Pros: food, friendly staff more

True Louisiana Fare 7/27/2004

I was raised in New Orleans and still have family there. I know and love authentic New Orleans food. Lagniappe is the only restaurant outside of Louisiana I have ever visited that is the real deal. The fried shrimp taste just like my Mama's. Yum. The prices are perfect and the food is authentic. This is true Louisiana comfort food. Pros: authentic, affordable, family atmosphere more
