Good Experience 2/25/2012

We stopped by on a Saturday at lunchtime but ordered two combination dinners [#201 & 203]. While the salsa was not “blow your head off” spicy it had character and I especially appreciated the diced onions. I ended up doctoring it up with some bottled hot sauce. The corn chips are thin, crisp, not salty and have an earthy/authentic flavor. The restaurant is clean, the building isn’t anything special and the dining room has nice “tiffany” hanging lamps over the tables. The service was very good, the dining room was about half full when we arrived at 11:45 AM and people came and went it was slightly less than half full when we left about 12:40 PM. Prices are very reasonable and portions are good without being oversized. The menu is huge; you’ll find something you like for sure. There is convenient parking adjacent to the restaurant. My combo dinner “Grande Special Sampler” came with refried beans and Spanish rice. The rice was moist but not too flavorful, I added one of the four hot sauces that are on every table. The beans were very good and not overly fatty/greasy. The taco was very good and I consumed it before venturing on to the other delights on my plates [it took two oval dinner plates to contain my order]”, the ground beef was tasty as was the shell and cheese. The chili relleno was very nicely and creatively accomplished. I believe it was my favorite of all the sampled dishes. The enchilada had a wonderful sauce, very light but tasty shell and the same excellent ground beef as the taco. The burrito was well stuffed and tasty without being too large especially considering what all came with this order. The chalupa appeared to be a green salad on my plate, fresh ingredients very nicely displayed. My Wife chose the “Del Mar Fajitas” combo and totally enjoyed it. I can testify that the sauce was wonderful as I sampled a piece of tomato, green pepper and mushroom. I didn’t have room to abscond with a shrimp or scallop. The guacamole was fresh and very nicely done as I did swipe a bit after mis-directing her to look at a very lovely tiffany lamp behind her. more

Inexcusably rude service 4/20/2009

I will never spend another dollar at this restaurant. If it was possible to give it zero stars, I would. We generally dine in, but one night wanted to order takeout instead. So I called and asked if they would fax me a menu. The man I spoke with told me that he would send it “this time” but I had better keep it. He said that if I ever called back he would not send me another one, and I quote “That’s why we have takeout menus.” I told him to forget it. The food is fine — basic Mexican — but nothing spectacular. I’ll spend my money elsewhere; nothing like turning away customers! (Quite frankly, not to sound petty, but it's not exactly the cleanest place in the world either ...) Pros: Cheap, but I guess that is why they cannot afford menus Cons: Rude bordering on nonexistent service more

I love La Tolteca 11/8/2008

La Tolteca is excellant mexican cuisine - although in my view not 100% authentic - but very tasty and good value nonetheless. There are several La Toltecas in Delaware, from Dover to Bear to Wilmington ... they are successful. Bad service? Rubbish! I ALWAYS had good service. I love the Chiles Rollenos. Pros: A great satisfying mexican meal at an affordable price! Cons: Not exactly 100% authentic mexican recipes. more

DO not eat at this place 9/11/2007

Warning - Do not eat at this restaurant. The staff cannot speak english therefore cannot give you any service. They take your order over the phone and then when you get there, they do not have your order. They are very rude. Pros: Nothing. Cons: Everything. more
