I went to SJS (before the U) and graduated in '71. We lived in the SJ area after college, but moved to the east coast in '93. This is a new location, but our friends tell us it is the same pizza. We STILL DREAM of House of Pizza! Let's go to the HOP! more

House of Pizza 7/31/2009

I grew up near the house of pizza. And we had their pizza very often. I love it. To most it brings back memories of the days gone by. I can honestly say I have never seen any other pizza like it. If you eat your pizza with utensils & only eat flat pepperoni this is definitely not the place for you. But if you like chunky spicy pepperoni and plenty of sauce and cheese with an old school atmosphere you got to come have one. It’s a place where old friends meet with cold beer and hot pizza to reminisce & catch up. Located downtown off Almaden between San Carlos and the 280. House of Pizza you either like it or you don’t but you won’t know until you try it. Pros: good pizza more

Grab a table the line can get slow. Worth the wait. 5/4/2008

Most people seem to know this place from the old Downtown SJ days.. Always seemed to be OK people to me. People are people . Old San Jose original Pizza.. (May have HIspanics, number of Whites, Pacific Islanders, Persian, Egyptian, Japanese, African, Dominican, American mix crowd). (Kids are allowed to be kids). (People are not too worried about you.) (The crust was good). Pros: Great date place on weekdays, not so family polite on the weekends or busy shark days. Cons: Great date place on weekdays, not so family polite on the weekends or busy shark days. more

Possibly the worst pizza I've eaten in the bay area, but there are many other reasons to avoid this place. 12/16/2007

If this is the best pizza in San Jose, there is something seriously wrong with this place. The crust was that of a frozen pizza and I cannot stress this enough. Not to be outdone, it was as if the cheese, sauce and pepperoni were all competing with the crust on which individual contribution were most detrimental to the pizza as a whole, ending in a melee of mediocrity that left me feeling sad.\r \r The pizza was bad, the atmosphere was worse. This was largely an uneducated and crass crowd with an obvious criminal element as well. There was a bar filled with career alcoholics that seemed transplanted from the seediest of San Jose dive bars. Accentuating this scene were a number of bikers boisterously, if not obnoxiously, recounting some of their more colorful life experiences, including ""We Kicked that Guy in the Face,"" and ""I Totally Banged that Chick."" Seeing the many children running around made me feel as though I must have been the subject of a practical joke. Why would anyone bring their children here?!\r \r The whole experience was bad. Pros: Embodies the new America: fat, dumb, and ugly. It will make you feel better about yourself. Cons: You will lose a certain amount of faith in humanity. more

Best place for pizza and good drinks 9/27/2007

Pizza, if only it was good enough to call it that! 9/15/2007

I was expecting a lot after reading the reviews online. Unfortunately, I was let down when we ate the pizza during our NFL football watching. The pizza was ok at best. The crust was soggy and too soft. There was too much cheese. The pizza was better than a chain but not by much. You have been warned. Pros: Service Was Good Cons: Pizza, Pizza, Pizza more

Good Pizza, mediocore atmosphere 9/10/2007

I went to this place based on the excellent reviews. I was suprised by the limited selection of toppings that were available. After waiting in line to order for 5 minutes, my wife and I ordered a medium five topping pizza for $18.99 and took a seat. It took a while to find a seat that wasn't sorrounded with trash on the floor. After about 20 minutes, we got our pizza. The pizza had a nice flaky crust and spicy pepporoni. The pizza was very flavorful, though I have had better pizzas in other places. I couldn't find anything notable about the cheese or ingredients to say that it was better than the chain pizza places. The atmosphere was unique with all the artifacts and probably a good place to take kids, but I don't think I will return. I think I was expecting more from this place, because it was rated so highly. Pros: Excellent pizza crust, good overall taste, convienent access, good for kids Cons: Messy tables, not exactly cheap, noisy more

Dont forget to play some of the 45,s that they have in the jukebox.Oh ya,did I say old school? Yes I did. Now go and re-live some of those memories.. Pros: Precious memories more

The very best around.... 7/9/2007

My first visit was 1970 and we've been their biggest fans ever since. The style has not changed in all those years, though the location has. As much as I miss the old place, it was too crowded and parking was near impossible, so despite the petitions everyone signed to save the old place, it's current location was for the better. My kids have loved this place since they were old enough to eat solid food, and now my grandkids are old enough to enjoy it as well. Three generations of gastronomic delight! We almost always order the confusion, but any combo is great. The edge pieces are crispy goodness and the center cuts are heavenly prime juiciness - two great styles in one pizza.\r \r The atmosphere is relaxing, fun, informal, and you never feel as though you have to tell the kids to quiet down. The bar is fully stocked and they mix their drinks liberally. Cocktail prices are not cheap but you do get your money's worth. \r \r The pizza is best enjoyed when eaten hot & fresh as served. Even after it cools down for a couple hours, it's still great. Leftovers out of the fridge at home the next day are still good but just not the same. Besides the usual microwave treatment, I've tried warming in the oven, warming in an iron skillet (covered and uncovered), frying in a little EVOO and/or butter, steamed, or just eaten cold. Any other ideas? I may try deep frying it some day but that seems a little extreme.\r \r With the passing of George a few years ago (I think it was 2004), the Kukar family is doing a wonderful job of maintaining a great institution. Long live the House of Pizza! Pros: Ambience, value, easy freeway access more

Best Pizza Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 11/9/2006

My dad used to take the family to house of pizza in the original building as a treat on Sundays! . what a treat! . some 40 years ago! The family loves their pizza... When we had big family get toghers with extended family members we would call it in and pick it up... there were always slices missing when the pizza runner returned back with the goods! I still go whenever I am in the area... Its quality has never changed over time.. It is still the all time best pizza I have ever had! more

The BEST Pizza and a fun place to have Friday night drinks!! 8/10/2006

I've been going to this place since I was a kid!! The pizza is the same as I remember it! \r House of Pizza is totally family friendly and not ""stuffy"" in any way. The jukebox has some major JAMS on it, we play ""what can I do"" every time we're there. The veggie pizza is to die for...just great! Pros: Fun ambience and Veggie pizza is great!! Cons: sometimes parking is hard to find more

I've been eating here since I was little!! 2/17/2006

I've been eating their pizza since I was very little. The pizza is a bit different than other pizzas, the toppings are on the inside of the pizza, not on top of the cheese. It is a bit greesy but its sooooooooooooo goood!!! I wouldn't recomend it for a romantic place, but it is a good hangout with friends and family. The place is filled with cool antiques and oldies music. The video games are bit outdated, but if you love old school video games then you'll love it. Pizza is a bit pricey, but it is worth the price. more

Lots of fun! 6/19/2005

this restaurant has such a friendly atmosphere and is always full of life. it is the place to be on any weekend and stays open until the wee hours of the morning due to the great amount of customers who simply don't want to leave. it would be great to see younger faces in the crowd, but more and more they are coming to this great place for some REALLY great pizza and great service. This family owned business has been successful for so many years because it is simply a great place to be! Great for family and friends, everyone should stop by and enjoy themselves! Pros: fun, great food, family friendly Cons: kinda expensive, can be too busy more

GREAT FOOD! 3/22/2005

I LOVE this place. One of the landmarks in San Jose. If you are scared of grease, this pizza is not for you. If you can appreciate good things and overlook health concerns momentarily, I think you will love this interesting and great change of pace pizza. more

Best Pizza Around 12/11/2003

I love this place. It is a real family place, lot's of kids, lot's of adults. Those who don't like it are snobs and should go to Scott's, pay three times too much and feel better about themselves. That is fine with me, more for the rest of us House of Pizza lovers. My favorite is linguica, pepperoni and mushroom - yummmmmmmmmmmmmy. It has been my fav for about 30 years now!!! more

THE BEST pizza ever 12/11/2003

I grew up in San Jose and I remember House of Pizza when it was at its old location. When I moved to Newark, we made special trips to House of Pizza...and even now that I live in the Central Valley...if we are even 45 miles close to San Jose, we'll make a trip there. The crust, the cheese...mmmmmm the cheese. I love the way the atmosphere is full of life. If you want great pizza...go to House of Pizza! Pros: Pizza, Pizza, Pizza Cons: parking is scarce more

The best pizza house around 9/7/2003

I've loved this restaurant since I was little. And now I take my kids there and, their like it too. I hope this pizza house never changes. Pros: very good food, friendly people, good pricing more

The ONLY pizza for me 9/7/2003

i have enjoyed this pizza since i was 9 and it has always been my favorite. people who dont like this pizza are crazy or dont know good food. my usual pizza is a large half combo half all meat. Pros: GREAT Pizza, lots of parking, full bar more

BAAAAAAD Pizza! 8/8/2003

This was some of the WORST tasing pizza I have ever tasted! I even gave them a second chance, but it got no better. The crust was too thin and tasted like it had been frozen, the sauce had a funny taste and the cheese was awful. I'd rather have a pizza from Domino's, and I won't eat THAT crap either! I don't know why this place has ANY customers, other than maybe most people from Silicon Valley just don't know what a good pizza REALLY tastes like. more

The Fixin's under the Cheese 7/22/2002

Being from Chicago I know a good pizza and House Of Pizza is up there with the best. Ive Been going there since I was 20 and Im pushing 50 now. Pros: Fast Service, Family Owned, Good Parking Cons: Crowded, Noisy, A Weight Gainer more
