Best

Lockhart, Texas -- also known as the Barbecue Vatican. This place here is the Taj Mahal of Texas barbecue. So what if they only have three side dishes? It's all abou...

Worst

I'm sure I'll get strung up for saying this, but Kreuz has disappointed me. Of course I had to go after hearing all the raves. The brisket was tender but off-puttingly flabby and ...

Yum 10/26/2002

Year after year at the top of the list. Kreuz has likely been in business longer than the rest combined. Pros: great BBQ more

Regular Stop 10/14/2002

As far as Central Texas BBQ's, this is one of the best. It has the usual ""order by the pound"" method of ordering, but this place differs from the rest in that: 1) the seating area is completely separate from the pits and is away from the smoke, 2) the dining area is large, spacious and well lighted, 3) easy parking, and 4) they offer lean shoulder cuts (which, I guess this is more common these days, but some places don't offer it...for those who make the pretence of eating healthy). The meats are done to perfection, excellent smokey flavour and sausages that are not greasy. Excellent. more

To die for meat 10/9/2002

I have been going to Kreuz for the last 6 years. Everytime I am in Austin, I make a point to travel to Lockhart for the best smoked meat anywhere. The pork is to die for. I have never had such a wonderful tasting pork chop. There is nothing about this monument to meat that leaves you wanting. I would suggest that if you are anywhere in Central Texas, go to Lockhart. You will not be sorry Pros: Great Food, Great Food, Great Food more

the best over the rest 10/3/2002

I have been eating barbecue in the austin area for over 30 years and without a doubt Kreuz Market now in there new location is the best deal for the money. What is very unique about Kreuz is that they sell a special cut of beef called shoulder and you or at least i cannot find that anywhere else. Their sausauge is also very tasty. Everywhere in austin you can find brisket and even at kreuz, but if you go order 2 slices of shoulder and one dry ring per person and you will never forget or regret it. Pros: very inexpensive, good parking, small town atmosph. Cons: 30 miles to austin, closed sundays more

Pronounced ""Krites"" 10/3/2002

Tasty smoked meats. No sandwiches - brisket and links are just sold by weight. Hot in the summer. more

Authenticity at its best 9/10/2002

You won't find this kind of BBQ place anywhere else, but the Lone Star state. There are no utensils. There are no plates. What do you get? A piece of wax paper to hold on to your ribs, or beef. The meat is all cooked in an oven with ambers dating back generations--they are serious about their BBQ. You can smell the perfection in the oven before you even walk in. This isn't the original location, but it's the original family that owns the ever important ambers. If you find yourself in the Lockhart area, stop here for lunch, then plan a nap for the rest of the afternoon. more
