Double Rock Park is a shady oasis in the middle of Parkville, easily accessible from the city. There are two state of the art playgrounds, several ball fields, and well marked hi...

Double Rock - Fair and balanced 3/1/2010

My family has been this community for more than 50 years. This park has seen good times and bad. From hosting baseball and softball events to family picnics it has been a mainstay. Where things started to go downhill was when a local television station was hosting a ""movie night"" at the park. One of the worst things that Baltimore County could have agreed to participate in. That particular endeavor brought more traffic into this community than the streets could handle. Not to mention persons of questionable character and intent lurking in places where they shouldn't be. I spent a lot of time in and around the park and I have to say a few things to the fawning reviews of a few people. First, the water that runs through the park and its adjoining community does not contain any fish. Why? Well, number one, this water is part of a storm water management system (check with Baltimore County, it's called Stemmer's Run), which was designed to carry storm runoff away from populated areas quickly. I strongly caution you against casually wading or at worst swimming in this water. In storm conditions, this water is muddy and full of contaminants that are washed off roads. Hence the fish rumor is bunk. Fish can't live in water of such poor quality or keep their position when the water moves so quickly downstream (did I mention that my family has been here for more than 50 years?). We do however, have an abundant array of wildlife. I personally have seen red foxes, opossums, many species of birds and even bats during the summer (they do a good job at keeping mosquitos in check). Even reptiles such as frogs and snakes help to keep everything in balance. For the last several years, a pair of ducks has been roosting in the water behind my house. It's always a welcome sight to see such wildlife this close to the city, living quietly and flourishing. In all, this is a nice area to visit. Just remember that you are visiting someone else's home area and act appropriately. Pros: Place, community, wildlife Cons: Outside Riff-Raff more
