Best

Amazing dim sum. More expensive than the norm, but so worth the price. When I go to Yank Sing, I tend to feel like I am overpaying but somehow when I come here, I never feel lik...

Worst

Koi Palace arguably serves some of the best Chinese food in the Bay Area but also has one of the worst services. The staffs are not friendly and are snobbish. I only go there be...

Mixed 4/24/2004

I was looking forward to a good Chinese meal and while I believe the food was good, the lunch menu was lacking and the service was sub-par. This is not American Chinese food, so dont expect Mongolian Beef or Kung Pao Chicken, as a matter of fact I think I only saw one chicken item on the menu and zero beef, its all pork and seafood. I do want to say that the calamari and the pot stickers were good, but I dont think I will be back. Pros: free parking, tea Cons: , service, menu more

Stay Away!!! 2/21/2004

Took family to dinner here and after reading previous reviews was a bit apprehensive about coming here. But had to try it out based on friend's recommendation. Turns out that most reviews were right. Rude service, noisy atmosphere but in addition to that an overpriced menu as well as their filthy restrooms. Will never go back and never recommend to anyone except for people I dislike. Pros: Parking availabiltiy Cons: , Rude staff, Noisy more

service was horrible.... 1/28/2004

The food they serve is excellent, but the service they provide is terrible. I felt that they only target Chinese people as customers. I asked for some menu item and explained them what I wanted, but they didn't care. I liked it before now I'm disappointed. more

Great Dim Sum/ Flaky service 1/12/2004

The dim sum is excellent here. But you have to order from the menu to get the best selection or your favorites. Service is flaky. You have to forcefull with the waiters to get any kind of service. Be prepared to wait as this place is exteremely popular on Sundays. Cost is reasonable. Canal street LV flaire. Pros: Dim Sum, Cost Cons: Service more

Food not service 1/12/2004

This is my forth time going to Koi Palace. The only reason that keeps me coming back is the food not the service. They have the worse dim sum service by far. Our waiters are not very attentive and you have force them to get any service. Oh yeah, you have to wait for an hour or more to get a table and no reservations. So, good luck on Sunday. Pros: Parking, Food Cons: Expensive, Bad Service, Crowded more

Authentic Dim Sum 11/17/2003

Great dim sum- very very authentic. If you prefer ""Americanized"" Chinese food/dim sum, you may not be accostomed to the food served here. BIG place. Only downside- the wait to be seated for dim sum on the weekends. I only go during the week- and the wait is MUCH shorter (but the service is combination dim sum and ordering from the menu). Pros: Food , Parking Cons: Wait on weekends more

heavenly food, but super long wait 8/24/2003

The dim sum is the best I've had, and the variety is great. They have dim sum dishes that other places don't have, such as the duck wrap, eel pastry. If you are a duck lover, you've got to try the duck wrap. But be mentally ready for the hour long wait and crowed waiting area. The waiting area feels and looks like a trading floor, and people are pushing and shoving to get in and out of the restaurant. One advice though; call ahead and put your name down on the waiting list. It will save you from the waiting at the restaurant. Pros: great food, great variety, parking Cons: wait, service, large crowd more

Horrible service, food not worth it! 4/20/2003

Even when compared with the low standard in many Chinese restaurants, the obnoxiousness of Koi Palace hostesses is astounding. What kind of upbringing did these people possess to behave in such odious manner is beyond me. They have a few good dishes. But not good enough for the indignity they inflict upon their customers. more

Giant delicious suburban dim sum 3/9/2003

The title sums it up but an explanation and some patience are in order for those other than Chinese-American Silicon Valley tycoons and inlaws thereof on extended family Sunday brunches (together, 95% of the crowd). It's all about fresh, delicious food, nothing else. Service is whatever it takes to get the food to the table. Decor is a strip mall mostrosity. If you are adventurous and want great food just point at whatever looks good and enjoy. It's all good (far better than average dim sum) and unless you order the $138 per piece imported abalone from the front display counter the price is incredibly reasonable. We ate for $20 per person, including tax, tip, and shark's fin soup! more

Try it and you won't regret 3/8/2003

Excellent food and pretty good service from most of the waiter/waitresses. Hostesses tend to be a little stuck up (I think they think they look good). Dim sum is great and so is the seafood. Food is definitely on the expensive side, but hey, you DO get the good stuff. No pain no gain!! Pros: Food quality, Dim sum variety Cons: waiting for table more

Paradise by the Bay 2/7/2003

First of all I would like to say that the Koi Palace Restaurant is the best restaurant I have ever been to. Well I live in New York and I came upon this restaurant when I was on vacation during spring break. At first I thought it was just another normal Chinese restaurant but it turned out to be something very memorable. It sounds very unbelievable but it's true. My family and I ordered crab and it was big. At first I thought it wouldn't be so fresh but when the food came out, the smell was mouth-watering. When I took the first bite, it was so fresh and scrumptious. I also ate at other Chinese restaurant and it wasn't the same. The food wasn't as fresh or flavorful. To this very day, I still think about Koi Palace and think about the day I can come back. Pros: fresh seafood, great service, friendly people more

Disappointing 1/31/2003

Food was tasty; service was OK but not great; waiting time was ridiculously long. My biggest complaint is the staff speaks very poor English so they can't explain what the dishes are. It's a difficult place to go to if you aren't fluent in Chinese. Pros: tasty food Cons: long wait times, don't speak English, crowded more

Un Believable !!! ;) 1/29/2003

I have had dim sum everywhere since I first bit into a dumpling in 1977. And I thought I'd seen it all. . . .well, I did until Koi Palace. Their dim sum offerings I've never seen before. Ok a few of the dumplings are ho-hum, but Har Gao (shrimp dumplings) are great! Big fat piece of de-veined (thank goodness) shrimp. Normally I hate Chinese sweets - but the thousand layer cake awesome . . .we were blown away. We were also stunned by their dim sum version of Unagi . . .picture BBQ eel in pastry which looks like a cute little snake thingy. Cute and tasty. When you enter please look at the tea offerings, they have very usual teas. this place is worth every penny and every calorie! PS - even if you arne't Asian they will be polite to you ( a rare treat! ) Eliz. Pros: creative, beautiful interior, the best dim sum Cons: rumors of long lines more

Not again 12/23/2002

If you're in for a big disappointment, this is the place to go. If you're not Chinese, don't even think about having a meal at Koi Palace. I gave them 5 chances and their ratings went down hill every time we go there. Last time I went there, it was already 1:45pm, not only their out of almost everything, it also took the waiter a long time to take our order - while he was just chatting with the customer in the next table. No way I'll go back there.... Cons: crowded - too noisy, over-priced, rude staff more

RUDE SERVICE 12/22/2002

I AM SURE THAT IS A LOT OF CHINESE RESTAURANTS ARE MUCH BETTER THAN KOI PALACE RESTAURANT. THEY HAVE VERY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE TRAINNING. SPECIALLY THE HOSTESS AND THE MANAGER. THEY ARE VERY RUDE. more

Slow, not enough, noisy 11/30/2002

My Chinese friend recommended me to go the restaurant. He said it was the best Chinese restaurant in Bay Area. However, I didn't like it. The service was very bad, and it was so noisy that I couldn't hear what my friends was saying in the table well. If you go there with a few people, you will be seated in the corner or beside the wall. It would be prett uncomfortable!! Pros: tasty Cons: slow, noisy more

Simply the best dim sum! 11/9/2002

Tender, luscious, mouth-watering, tasty, delicious...you get the picture! Well worth the wait... more

Talk to my hand 10/24/2002

I must agree the food is well prepared, but I can,t hear myself think, the whole place is exploding with noise. and rude servers are like never have some kind of education in good manners and right conduct ,I will never recomend this place to anyone ........taking someone out for a meal???Take them somewhere else.......... Pros: food, parking, easy to find Cons: Rude servers, expensive, Rude servers more

seafood from the koi pond?!?!? 9/24/2002

Great authentic Hong Kong style. Crowds are overwhelming on weekends, but worth the wait. Try the bbq'd seabass fillet: slightly sweet flavor baked into a flaky, moist, smooth cut of fish to be remembered. Dim sum is very good; consistent all around. more

Quality for Less Elsewhere 9/19/2002

Sure you get the fancy setting but you could also get food equally as good for much cheaper if you're willing to forego the ambiance. This location is a winner b/c it fills a need for a good chinese restaurant in d.c. but go to any number of other great chinese restaurants if you're in the sunset or richmond districts. more
