Editorial review from Citysearch 10/31/2013

I would recommend Kinderhook Small Animal Hospital to any one! I have been bringing my pup Cassie there for 5 yrs now. When ever I have a question about any thing, the staff are always there to answer any of them. They always give great advice about your pets health and go beyond there means to make your pet (pets) better if they are sick. They never hesitate on making an appointment when its necessary. The office hrs are great and so are the staff. When my pup was a puppy (a couple of months old) I noticed that she developed a rash and was licking her rear end so I called his office and they told me that she probably needed her anal glands expressed and that she should be seen for the rash. I made the appointment for both issues and in the process of this he thought that she might have an allergy to beef and beef products. He recommended that we try the process of elimination first before doing the shots because the shots could be very costly. He also thought that once we have her spayed it should help with the allergy. He was right once again. When Cassie was a couple of days away from turning 5 yrs old I noticed that her lymph nodes in her neck were swollen and he told us that he thought it might be Lymphosarcoma and we should do a biopsy to make sure if it was or wasn't. I had the biopsy done and the price wasn't that bad for every thing. During her recovery from the surgery he called us to see how she was doing. I spoke to him personally and told him she was doing great. When he got the results back from pathology I once again spoke to him personally and it turned out that it was Lymphosarcoma. What that meant was she had cancer in her Lymph-nodes. I had to make another appointment to have her stitches taken out. During our appointment he showed us a lot of compassion and was sad also. He told us about different options we had and what some of the prices would range from. He also never hesitated to recommend us to see an oncologist if we wanted to. We decided to see the oncologist and they work together with each other on my pup Cassie's over all health. She is 2 chemo treatments in to her regimen and she is doing great. She has an amazing appetite, playful, and goes every 2 weeks for her chemo therapy treatments. After she had the second treatment done she developed a light green nasal discharge so I called Doctor Southards office and he said that its probably a secondary infection from the treatments and high dose of Prednisone. He put her on an antibiotic and told me to call them in a couple of days to let them know how she was doing. She no longer has the light green nasal discharge and is doing great. He always makes my pup feel at ease, pets her, talks to her and he is very very gentle. He has a calm demeanor, listens to every thing you say and asks questions to properly diagnose any problems if they arise. I will continue to take my pup Cassie there until her time comes and will bring any more of my pets there in the future. I will always and continue recommend Doctor Southard and his staff to any one. They are great and I couldn't ask for a better veterinarian. I am more than extremely pleased and will continue to give him my business.\r Cassie's mom,\r Amy Gableman more

Best animal Doctor & staff by far 4/23/2009

Dr. Southard & his staff took care of my cat Tigger back in January of 2009! Dr. Southard showed the utmost kindness and concern when he diagnosed my cat as having a cancer called Fibro Sarcoma. It was a cancer at the site of where your animals normally receive the rabies vaccine in the neck, and Dr. Southard knew what it was right away! He examined my cat to determine that he was healthy enough for the surgery to remove this tumor before it spreads to other areas and be the end of my cat if something wasn't done soon. It was growing rapidly. Pros: So very affordable! A wonderful caring Doctor & Staff Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Below Average Animal Hospital 5/29/2008

I've been to this Animal Hospital on a few occasions and found Dr. Southard to be unfriendly to the animals, rarely ever petting my dogs and never greeting me with a (hello) or anything. The visit also was only 5 - 10 minutes and he really didn't say a whole lot. The staff did not seem to be very good either. I have recently moved and am bringin my dogs to the Coxsackie Animal Hospital. Dr. Perkins and staff are excellent! They love seeing my dogs, always petting them and treating me very well in the process. Dr. Perkins has spent over an hour with me and my dogs on several occasions. The office is spotless and is always packed with people which shows other people in the community feel the same as I do. more

Caring Vet 1/14/2008

My wife and I have been taking our pets (dogs & cats) to Dr. Southard for over 20 years and have always been treated respectfully and professionally. They are a very caring office. I don't know what rsdifazio's issue was but I can guarantee that she must have done something to provoke the situation. What she describes is just so out of character for Dr. Southard and his staff that I'm sure she's only telling one side of the story. Just goes to show that there's no pleasing some people. Pros: Competent, caring and professional vet and staff Cons: Absolutely none. more

THE LOVING VET 11/1/2007

Nobody has taken better care of my little pookie than Doctor Southard. We have 12 dogs and have been professionally breeding for 24 years, we will go no place else for our dogs. Dr. Southard has saved us money and given us the best advice on their care. Pros: Great Value Cons: only one Vet - scheduling sometimes challenging more

Very Respectful 11/1/2007

Kinderhook Animal hospital has the most friendly and respectful staff in town. We just changed vets from another local vet after a referral from a friend. They also charge so much less than my old vet, it was a very smart move. We love Dr. Southard and wouldn't have anyone else take care of our little ones. Pros: Great Value very knowledgeable Cons: God only made one Dr. Southard more

Best Value Around 10/30/2007

Kinderhook animal hospital hospital has the best prices in town and has a very knowledgeable staff. We moved into town about 5 years ago and have been taking our animals there. We were shocked as to how much we paid for the service we recieved, the best value around. We love Dr. Southard, very quiet, but a great guy to know who takes excellent care of us. High recomend this place to anyone who loves their pets. more

Shocked at rudeness! 5/19/2007

My husband and I have brought our dog to Dr. Southard for the past five years. We will not be returning after today's visit. Our dog is always very well behaved, but is a barker, and can be a bit unnerving if you are not particularly fond of dogs. Apparently, Dr. Southard is not particularly fond of dogs, because at today's visit, he reprimanded me (read: yelled) for not holding the dog tightly enough. I believe that his exact words were, ""If you are not going to hold him, I will give you his records and you can get out"". This, after I *was* holding the dog. He claimed that the dog has tried to bite him every time we bring him in. I can assure you that my dog (a black lab) has never tried to bite anyone. Perhaps part of the problem is Dr. Southard's overall demeanor with animals (and people). He is not particularly friendly, and apparently does not believe in exchanging niceties upon meeting clients. He has never once actually tried to pet the dog, or even call him by name. We had always just chalked this up to him being shy. While I will say that Dr. Southard appears to be a good vet, I was shocked at the way I was treated today, and would highly recommend bringing your animals elsewhere. I would also question if my husband would have received the same rude treatment, had he been there instead of me. Cons: incredibly rude service more
