Awful 9/28/2008

Been waiting for years to go here. Just never was in the area or always went someone else, but I had to try it. Got tjheir Saturday 9/29 about 5 or so the staff should be ready for a busy night. Only one other person there. Server came and got order. I got the cheeseburger plate $9.99, which their hamburger is basically is about the size of a McDonalds 1/4 pounder. It came with fries and cole slaw. $10 for this???. I was expecting more. Wife got New York strip ($13.99) that came with salad and she asked for a side of tomatoes and cottage ($2.49)cheese. 2 kids got chicken fingers and fries. Cole slaw and wife salad came out quick. Coleslaw. no taste at all. Wife had thousand island dressing which was not good either. She didn't finish salad. Food came out. One bite of burger, burnt but tasted ok. Second bite....raw hamburger. not undercooked,,,raw. 1st inch around burger was cooked, rest was raw. Sent it back, by the time I got it back, everyone else was done. Cheese not even melted and this is the home of the cheeseburger??? so I got my replacement to go. Never ate it. got it home and it still wasn't cooked. To the cook- There is a difference in rare and raw. I ordered mine well done by the way,. Wife steak was supposed to be medium well. It was rare and to the point the middle was jell like. Never got the cottage cheese. Server disappeared. Kids had no complaints, but not sure how you mess up chicken strips. food made me and wife sick about 30 minutes after leaving. soft drinks were $2.25 each. All this fun cost me about $47 not counting tip. So for $47 the Kids ate, I got an order of fries and wife had half a steak. For someone who had great expectations for this place I would have to rate it as the worst place I have ever eaten. Way overpriced for what you get, service bad. Would I ever go there again, not if they paid me. If you can go somewhere else...go there Pros: none Cons: Bad food, Bad Service overpriced more

The birthplace of the cheese burger. 12/13/2006

Original Cheeseburger 8/27/2006

I grew up in Louisville, and moved back for a short while after college and never ate here. A friend took me just to see what the hype was about and we loved it. The cheeseburger and mini cheeseburgers we so good. The fries were OK, but the homemade chips were the best I have ever had! The restraunt was full of older people, dark, and small, but cute. They are now serving locally brewed beer, which is a bonus. Last thought, I saw on the food network that this really is the birthplace of the cheeseburger, so it must be true!! Pros: Homemade chips Cons: Older crowd more

overrated cheeseburger 8/6/2006

The service was nice, and the atmosphere was not bad, but we went for the cheeseburgers. They were overdone, over charbroiled. Fries and homemade chips were pretty good, though. more

Good Traditional food 8/14/2005

Visited the restaurant with another couple. We all agreed this was a very good choice. The old sign out front advertises the true test of time. Inside the restaurant was quaint but the food was good with some local foods added for variety. The ribs and burgers were great. A good family style restaurant with reasonably priced food. more

Good cooking 8/26/2003

After travelling all day we were ready for some comfort food. This was a great place to go. My husband had a wonderful steak. The hot brown was really delicious. Wish we had had time to go back before leaving town. Pros: Hot Brown, Mashed Potatoes more

Yum! 12/4/2002

THE BEST CHEESEBURGER EVER! You should also try the hot brown. more

Birth Place of the Cheeseburgers 8/16/2002

Kaelin's restaurant claims to be the inventor of the Cheeseburger. While I have no idea about that claim. I do know that no one serves up one that is any better. Others may serve bigger burgers but none beat the taste of Kaelin's Cheeseburger. If the cheeseburger wasnt born there, it sure is at home there! Pros: Great Cheeseburgers, Reasonable prices Cons: atmosphere is just OK more

Not the best. 7/23/2002

I recently ate at Kaelin's and tried the cheesburger, which was overpriced and not all that great. For a place famous for cheeseburgers try Genny's or WW Cousins which are much better. Restaurant was also very dark. Service was fairly good, however. Pros: Service Cons: price and value more

  • The Scene
If you're under age 50, you'll be in the minority. Plenty of customers have been coming since the restaurant's opening in 1934. Most young people just haven't gotten cool enough to come here yet. It's cozy, with exceptionally nice servers who treat newcomers like regulars.

    The Food
This Highlands eatery serves up delicious American comfort food like roast beef and mashed potatoes, fried chicken and barbecue pork sandwiches. The specialty of the house is the cheeseburger: a medium-sized beef patty topped with a slice of American cheese and all of the trimmings tucked into a buttery toasted bun. It's one of the best burgers around. For the ultimate in comfort and indulgence get the cheeseburger platter with crispy fries and creamy coleslaw, and order a chocolate shake to wash it down.
