I like this place, but I think it has suffered as a result of a couple of TV spots featuring celebrity chefs. Bobby Flay did a feature here several years ago, and more recently, Tony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern stopped by. Of course, this once hidden gem is now well known to the professional trendies who like to venture out of Manhattan, or the ever growing ones that are now taking up residence in Astoria. What this has done is push the prices up. I tend to think that Ali has a sliding scale of pricing, as many people just ask him to serve them whatever he recommends. The bill comes and I can't help but think it depends upon how you look, Ali's mood, and Ali's financial situation at that time. I can tell you that you will get a much more memorable experience if you go there during off-peak times. On Friday and Saturday evenings, Ali gets far too rushed and although still good, is not as good as he is midweek. All credit due to Ali, the food is delicious, but the best part of the experience is the interaction with Ali when he has the time to talk you through your food.
Pros: Atmopshere
Cons: High prices
