Too expensive for food that's not great 9/15/2006

We went to this restaurant because we wanted to try their dim sum, but we came out of the restaurant very disappointed. They don't serve dim sum anymore, so we ordered appetizers- dumplings and daikon cake. Dumplings were okay, nothing special, and daikon cake was just bland. Mediocre - Definitely overrated 8/19/2006

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad restaurant. The ambience and service was good. However, the food is definitely mediocre - perhaps it is overhyped - but the food was definitely average at best. The menu is not at all original - very much derivative of places like the Slanted Door. The food just wasn't prepared well - the meat wasn't tender, the beans were tough, there was too much sauce and it was very watery. While this may be a unique style of food for Chapel Hill, it definitely could use some work. Quite frankly, the issues I had with their food were beginner issues I used to experience when I first started cooking Asian food. Meanwhile, I'll stick to getting my Asian fusion elsewhere. Great Food, Great Service! 8/10/2006

Great crab/shrimp cakes, beef ribs and by far the best was the Kung Pao Chicken (which was the least expensive meal on the menue.) There were four of us and we tasted everyting that was ordered, we all agreed that the food was top notch. (It's hard to please all four of us!) The service was on time and fun. One of my favorite Triangle places 7/10/2006

My friend and I were in on a Monday night, when, typically restaurants are closed, and we were happy this place was one of the open ones. First things first. We were greeted by several staff, all of whom were really friendly. We both split the Imperial Pilsner, one of the finest ways to start an evening together. Our appetizers didn't let us down, either. We split the pork and shrimp dumplings and the Vietnamese spring rolls, both superb - it was all we could do to move on from the appetizers to the main course. I would have ordered something different, but every time I go there, I get the yellow curry, and it was as tasty as ever. My fried ordered noodles, too - the spicy peanut sauce was awesome. Great Dim Sum Experience! 7/8/2006

I went today for my first dim sum experience since coming to NC, with The Triangle Singles Dining Out Meetup group... We had a great time trying all the delicious dishes...There wasn't one thing that I didn't really like that we tried, and we tried 9-10 of them... The only thing I was disappointed with was, there wasn't any desserts on the dim sum cart, and when we went to order from the regular menu, 2 of the desserts were not available, and it just so happened those were the two desserts we were going to order :) All in all a very good dining out experience, and we will definately be coming back! Try it, you won't be disappointed... The rice is wonderful, crab cakes were good... Pork was delish... Dumplings yummy! Heck, it was all good! Pros: Parking, Service, Experience more

incredible pan-asian food, authentic and elegant 5/8/2006

Barring the strip-mall location and the slight priciness of the food and drinks, Jujube would be an almost perfect restaurant. The chefs are able to combine the best aspects of old-school, traditional asian food with updated, fusiony cuisine. The dumplings are fantastic; I'd recommend the Chicken and Cilantro. The spare-ribs and the firecracker prawns are great for a heavier, more savory meal. The seafood dishes are light and clean tasting, especialy the Ahi Tuna. Good cocktails too. They make one with Gin and Cucumber that may replace Mojitos for me as a perfect summer drink. Slightly salty, and overall not as good as The Lantern, but more authentic, and definitely worth a trip. Reservations? 4/23/2006

Made reservations for our wedding anniversary. Arrived early and was not seated until over 30 minutes after the reservation time. Hostess did nothing to update us on our wait and we watched others seated before us. Scallops were good but the chicken was WAY too salty (this is coming from a salt lover). Overall it was a fine first experience but nothing blew us away. Recommend Duck & Dumpling in Raleigh. Pros: Choices, Location Cons: Noisy, Reservations more

Just Great 3/19/2006

We stopped in on Friday night without a reservation and were given a table immediately. Our waitress was extremely attentive but not pushy. We ordered and ate at our pace, which is a difficult balance to achieve. I don't pretend to know Asian fusion cuisine particularly well, but it at least seemed that Jujube was doing things right. We are typically budget-conscious eaters, so we decided to order several small plates and soups to share. Our waitress was happy to make suggestions. I ordered a small bowl of the spicy coconut/curry soup and was very pleased. If that was all I had ordered, I would have been satisfied. The fried calamari was also interesting. Both of our dumpling choices seemed good as well. The only dish I wasn't impressed by was the sweet shitake plate. Though it's a steal at $3, I didn't really see what the big deal was. Old Favorites and Many Triangle Firsts 3/11/2006

Ive had two great meals at Jujube and really recommend it. The first time I was with a date and we were shown to a quiet table toward the back. We ordered three small plates: pork and shrimp dumplings, sweet shitake mushrooms, and broccoli with oyster sauce. Our server saw we werent in any hurry and helped us maintain a leisurely pace. He recommended a reasonably-priced Spanish Cabernet that would otherwise have escaped my attention. For main courses we ordered hanging roast pork and grilled sashimi tuna. Both had wonderful, unexpected flavors, better than any pork or tuna Ive ever had locally. On a second visit, with some friends, we sat at the kitchen bar, watched the wok wizardry behind the counter, and started with the stuffed calamari appetizer and a great Australian Shiraz. My favorite new Triangle restaurant 2/28/2006

Chapel Hill has been waiting for a place like this. It's real Asian food, not dumbed-down for American palates. There's stuff here you won't find anywhere else in the area. Every dish is distinct. My last visit had delectable pork and shrimp dumplings, mussels in black bean sauce, an amazing pear, watercress and roasted pork salad, and shitake mushrooms. If you go and you're a pork fan, I LOVE the ribs in a hoisin-based barbecue sauce and the hanging roast pork. The atmosphere is also unique. Service has been professional and friendly, despite some signs of a new place that got popular fast: the staff can be a little rushed, and you definitely need reservations at busy times. But they're working out the kinks. Bottom line--great place, unique for the Triangle, would be at home in any large city, with food that's both delicious and interesting. Would not recommend. 2/27/2006

I tried Jujube's for lunch. The service was terrible, took over an hour from start to finish. The food was terrible. I had to send mine back, and of course since it had taken so long to come out, I did not have time to get a replacement. Not that I would have wanted to by the looks of the dishes my friends got. The meat appeared to be very poor in quality, hard stale bread, fried rice had lots of burnt areas and tasted charred.... Overall, I would give this place an F. more

The best in the Triangle! 1/28/2006

Since it's been open, Ive returned to Jujube at least once every week , and I cant say enough or tell too many friends about it. Chef Deal has created in Jujube the most thoughtful and tasty food in the Triangle and for all-sized appetites. My friends and I were blown away by the Vietnamese pork rolls, firecracker prawns, and the grilled sashimi-grade tuna, but not before sampling each of the dumplings. DONT MISS THE DUMPLINGS! Theyre better than in any dim sum place around. The bartender helped guide us around the eclectic wine list, and our choices matched our dinners perfectly. Even my picky vegetarian friend loved it. The place is also gorgeous from the ambiance to the photography to the music. And when its too packed to sit in the dining room, get entertained at the noodle bar.
