Best

I have long believed the Arcade Restaurant in Memphis has the best sweet potato pancakes I have ever tasted. Jospeh's gives them a run for the money and may actually be better. ...

Worst

Unfortunately, no matter how many times I try, I just can't find a way to like Joseph's. From the slightly too ""hole in the wall"" atmosphere, the service attitude straight out ...

Fair at best, with a little attitude 9/17/2008

We arrived on a Sunday morning around 11:30 for a late breakfast (they don?t serve lunch on Sunday). There was a lot of confusion at the hostess stand if there was actually a table available. Turns out there was going to be a wait, but the catch is?.there were several open tables. We waited. However, a local couple arrives, speaks to the owner and is promptly seated ahead of everyone else that is waiting. Seems if you are one of the local aristocrat regulars the owner of Joseph?s will seat you right away, the rest the tourist and paying customers that keep her afloat shall wait! As it turns out, the kitchen was way behind, so the average Joe waited. The breakfast was acceptable. Nothing to write home about, and in a town like Charleston you can do better. There is a wonderful bed and breakfast just around the corner that has a very nice brunch. It will be more expensive but a much more pleasant experience. Joseph?s was not terrible, and they did have two gentlemen playing music that was relaxing and enjoyable. Joseph?s It is fine if you can?t find anything else, but in Charleston, I assure you?.you can find something else. more

great food great price 5/6/2008

I love the food here. I like their Dr. No Carb salad--steak salad with peppercorn sauce. and their sandwish that has the steak filet on a cresent roll. They give u a lot of food, and it all tastes good. It has a very relaxed atmosphere, and it's a good place to bring children. more

Can You Say Overated? 10/17/2007

Unfortunately, no matter how many times I try, I just can't find a way to like Joseph's. From the slightly too ""hole in the wall"" atmosphere, the service attitude straight out of a NY truck stop and the inconsistent food quality, it all adds up to a lot of more misses. Pros: Interesting choices when prepared correctly. Cons: Service is generally off the mark. more

Sweet Potato Pancakes 10/15/2007

My husband and I ate breakfast at Joseph's while celebrating our 5th anniversary. We had to wait outside for a table, but not too long. We enjoyed watching people. I ordered the sweet potato pancakes with a side of bacon. My husband ordered the classic breakfast with two eggs, grits, bacon and toast. He enjoyed every bit. The sweet potato pancakes were really delicious (especially since it was fall of the year). The only thing I found strange was my toasted pecan butter. There were chives in it! I don't know how they got there, but I ate it anyway. I did find myself adding a little syrup to them, the butter wasn't enough alone. Overall, a great little restaurant for breakfast, but I would not recommend the coffee. It tasted like cheap Foldgers or Maxwell House coffee. Pros: Sweet Potato Pancakes and Toasted Pecan Butter Cons: Coffee, small restaurant more

Sweet Potato Pancakes & pepper, onion, sausage & cheese omelette are both FANTASTIC!!! 8/6/2007

I have long believed the Arcade Restaurant in Memphis has the best sweet potato pancakes I have ever tasted. Jospeh's gives them a run for the money and may actually be better. With the toasted pecan butter, it iwould be a shame to ruin them with syrup. The pepper, onion, sausage & cheese omelette was recommended by our server and it was also a great choice. The flavors of the ingredients melded very into a delicious taste treat. The 20 minute wait passed quickly, as Joseph's has outdoor seating and provides coffee & water while waiting. Foodwise, the only negative were the grits. Appeared to be instant with a slice of Kraft american cheese semi-melted on top. If you are familiar with grits, you will be disappointed; if you are not familiar with grits, Joseph's will give you a bad impression and you may never order them again. Our server was pleasant and great at taking our order and delivering it when it was ready; however, otherwise, for coffee & coffee refills, he was pretty much AWOL. Nevertheless, except for the grits, Joseph's is a ""must do"" for breakfast in Charleston. Pros: Sweet Potato Pancakes & pepper, onion, sausage & cheese omelette Cons: Grits & Service more

Best Sweet Potato Pancakes in the world, Great Service, Generous Servings 9/18/2006

After being told about Josephs Restuarant at another closeby establishment we decided to go the next morning...For Charleston, the prices were very reasonable...Looking around we noticed the servings were tremendous especially on the pancakes...If you have lesser appetites we found ordering a la carte was the way to go for the two of us and save money also...After completing our first meal we conversed with our server and learned that they specialized in sweet potato pancakes...So we decided to return the next morning and ordered them...and oh my they are to die for...Large cakes with pecan butter...You should definitely put this restaurant on your list of places to eat when visiting Charleston...You won't regret it!!! Pros: Easy Walking Distance to Historic District, Highlight Breakfast, Generous Servings Cons: If anything ambience, & parking...Not fancy, but in it own way "Very Charleston" more

Great cafe experience! 6/27/2006

I moved to Charleston for the summer to work and this is the perfect place to go to lunch! It is obvious the restaurant is family-owned and the food was great! They offer healthy food and food to indulge in. I recommend crab cakes for an appetizer and the salads and turkey sandwiches are great! Pros: Great location, great atmosphere Cons: Parking more

Fantastic Find 6/25/2006

My husband and I were in Charleston for the weekend and took the time to check citysearch (thankfully) for ""best of..."" in a couple different departments. What a great decision! We ended up at Joseph's for breakfast and couldn't have enjoyed it more! Definitely recommend the sweet potato pancakes (FABULOUS) and the roasted pepper/sausage/cheese omelet. Great service and amazing food! more

Great Lil' Hideaway 8/4/2004

I take everyone that comes to visit me to this place. Its nestled in the heart of down town next to the Gibbs Art Museum and has a great atmosphere. Its not overly expensive for lunch approx. $7 plus tip and every time we've been we've had excellent service. In the spring and fall they have their back garden open for seating which is absolutely wonderful! Pros: Good Food, Inexpensive, Great service more
