Worst

Moved from the city out to the burbs and was hoping to find a good sushi restaurant. This definetly is not it. The sushi is average at best, and overpriced. Cons: $$$$$

Editorial review from Citysearch 2/14/2015

In 3 months I will be 65 years old. I have been eating sushi since our Japanese next door neighbors got me hooked on it when I was 3 years old. I love sushi so much that I have gone to great lengths to learn how to me pretty good sushi. (A lot harder than it looks to make really good sushi.) \r \r So I have eaten a lot of sushi in a lot of fine sushi bars. I honestly believe that Jo's is the best of the lot. If there is a sushi bar to compare in all of Northern California I don't know what it is. I love Jo's and eat there as often as I can. It is always first rate. \r \r And I read some of the negative reviews. To me, they are so off the wall and crazy sounding that I am suspicious that they may have been written by sushi bars that wish to compete. (None in the are can.) \r \r In short, I love Jo's and have never had anything there that was not simply wonderful. more

Dry, fishy, and upset stomach aftermath. 1/10/2009

The headline I added pretty much sums up my experience at ""Jo's Sushi"" restaurant"". Pros: The restaurant was close to my home. Cons: I'm unable to eat there again because of my upset stomach. more

Great Sushi bar... 7/21/2008

Jo's is one of the best sushi bars in the East Bay area. it is a fairly young crowd and thats why me and my roomates love going there to eat and have a good time. the restaurant is very clean and nice more

Jo's Sushi Bar is Fantastic! 7/10/2008

I don't know what Maestro72x & spawn350 could be referring to? I have dined at Jo's at least a dozen times, and the experience is always one of freshness, hospitality, and the familiarity that makes one become a ""regular"" customer. Jo is a sushi chef in the ""classic"" sense, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Volcano Roll or ICHIRO-LL from their maki selection, and ask Jo what he recommends. The only ""one star"" reviews he has received are from users who have only reviewed Jo's, not very credible. Reads more like reviews from the competition, written on successive Fridays none-the-less. Eat at Jo's!!!! Pros: Free parking, great service. more

Disspicable 4/28/2008

Avoid this place or you will get the plague! Pros: You get to leave in one piece. Cons: You will be tossing pieces of yourself later in your bathroom more

Worst sushi experience ever 4/21/2008

I went to Jo's based on the reviews here. I think that most of the people that like this place must also consider Safeway sushi to be excellent. Pros: The toilet has a bum warmer and bidet. Cons: The food and selection. more

I love it! 4/17/2008

Wow, who knew great sushi was in Pleasant Hill! This place is fun and friendly plus the sushi is top notch! The spicy tuna is a must....I will be back frequently more

Jo's Sushi 3/25/2008

We are a regular at Jo's Sushi bar.. by regular I mean every week. The sushi is by far the best I have ever had. The presentation is beautiful. The staff so friendly and warm I feel like I part of a family. The customers are friendly and the bar is a joyous place to eat and socialize. You will not regret your visit. Dee Pros: to many to list Cons: if you can't find a seat.. get there early .. fills up fast more

Great Sushi 11/4/2007

Great sushi ! Good service ! Great occasional specials $ depending on Jo's golf score.... Tables can bi kind of close- it's not a large place ! Pros: Sushi, Atmosphere Cons: Noise level, closeness of tables more

great local sushi 9/25/2007

what a great place.....my wife and I went there for a night out and it was great. Jo was great. my tea was never empty and the sake menu was the best i have ever seen. we are now regulars. for you sushi snobs out there its not the best but it fits us perfectly. go to Jo's you won't regret it. Pros: nice tv. and great service Cons: the bar is really small more

Ok overpriced sushi 9/20/2007

Moved from the city out to the burbs and was hoping to find a good sushi restaurant. This definetly is not it. The sushi is average at best, and overpriced. Cons: $$$$$ more

Nicest, most friendly sushi chef in the Bay Area! 7/31/2007

Part of what makes going to a sushi bar such a great experience is the company...aside from a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere and delicious food, our absolute favorite part of the night was chatting with the great guys behind the bar--one young man in particular who will be leaving for Japan in September to study taiko...so you should definitely try to stop by Jo's before he leaves! Great sushi AND eye candy- can't beat that! Pros: awesome sushi, great price, fun people! more

Fresh, but not much selection 7/12/2007

The sushi was very fresh, but if you are used to the huge and creative selection of rolls you get at a lot of sushi places in the Bay Area, you will be dissapointed. Mostly basics here. Pretty expensive as well. Very tasty food though, and probably closer to authentic Japanese. Pros: fast service, good fresh sushi Cons: poor selection, expensive more

BIG HD Flat-screen behind the sushi bar, and the freshest fish EVER! 3/15/2007

I live in Oakland, and I have established a few favorite sushi bars in Oakland, Berkeley & Alameda. But my work brought me out to Morello Avenue in Pleasant Hill, and a co-worker recommended Jo's Sushi for the expertise of the sushi chef & owner (Jo) and described the place as a ""hidden gem."" SO TRUE! I watched hoops on the TV, ate the ""butteriest"" nigiri, and spoke with the owner about how he became so popular with the people of Contra Costa county. Finally, the one thing that will amaze you is they have the most FANTASTIC bathroom in restaurant history. No kidding. Pros: Best Sushi, HD TV, Great Service, Shockingly clean & comfortable bathroom more

Great place to hang out for Sushi! 12/13/2006

Fun atmosphere, good food and great service. Try the tuna tar tar, Jo's special rolls, and any of the sashimi! more

Just can't bring myself to eat Sushi anywhere else. 8/3/2006

Jo lets folks know what fish is best on the night. Try to order off the specials listed on the shelves behind the bar. Great selection of Sake too! Pros: Easy Parking Cons: Busy on Friday nights more

close to Authentic Japanese 6/8/2006

As close to authentic Japanese as Japanese restaurants get in the area. Probably only second to Miraku. Only place I know of that serves kare (curry). Katsu kare (Pork cutlet in curry) tastes almost as good as the best katsu kare I've had when I was in Japan. Pros: Excellent japanese food, excellent and friendly service more

What a place !! 3/24/2006

You may experience so many different rolls. But Jo's has its original nigiri sushi and side dish. I have enjoyed trying ""Tilefish wakasayaki"" grilled tilefish. the best part of the dish is the scale on the fish. I had never eaten fish scale before, but it's so good. more

Finally! We found our sushi place 5/19/2005

We've been looking for ""our"" sushi place after moving to the area from SF. Tried places in Lafayette and Walnut Creek - nothing great. Then we found Jo's in a unassuming little strip off of Taylor. SO FRESH! GREAT Sushi! Rivals what we had in the city, plus the atmosphere was fun and homey. like the cool sushi spots in the city, where there is friendly banter between the sushi chef and the locals (boxes of loyal sake drinkers line the back wall). If you live in the East Bay, go here! (but you probably already know about it!). Pros: delicious, fresh, friendly service more
