Holy crap, that's a lot of books... 12/13/2006

First off, let me say that if you are looking for new or recently published books or anything hip or trendy then you will hate John King Books. John King Book is first and foremost a used and collectible books dealer. Man does he have a lot of them! John King Books is located in an old glove factory just west of downtown Detroit on Lafayette (not far from the Post Office). There isn't a whole lot of parking, but there is a small lot to the side of the building and is accessible to customers. This place probably has more books than the entire Detroit Public Library System. It's huge. All four floors of the factory are stuffed with all sorts of collectible and used books organized in a fairly easy to navigate fashion. No matter what topic, I'm sure you can find at least a dozen books on it. They even had a category for Beanie Baby books, among all things! They have a vast collection of classic novels and textbooks to sort through. I have never left John King Books without spending at least 30 bucks and getting half a dozen high quality books. more

Heaven On Earth, John King Bookstore... 8/15/2006

Oh! The pleasure of an afternoon at John King Bookstore! This place is a balm to my literature loving heart, offering both quantity (it is a veritable warehouse of used books) and quality (staff is amazingly knowledgeable and friendly). There is something so pure in the bibliophilia at King, manifested in its unadorned, ascetic milieu. No café here, no CDs or DVDs or novelty items, just multiple floors of dusty shelves filled with wonders. Pull up a crate in one of the aisles and lose yourself in your selection--no one will bother you for hours; staff and fellow customers understand this kind of passion for the written word. Special requests are always quickly filled by the terrific staff (Need twenty copies of the same edition of The Odyssey for less than fifty dollars? They can do that.) In the upper floors, each aisle has its own light switch for you to turn on as you explore, intensifying the experience of King as your own private text heaven. more

Definitely the Largest source of books in Michigan!!! 5/15/2006

I was tipped off from a friend about this bookstore and listen to this. I never went down there but whenever I couldn't find a book in my area, I could call them and get them to mail it out to me. I love the John King Book Store. There has NEVER been a time that they didn't have what I was looking for. Pricing is comparable to others and if they are the only ones to have it in stock...than its worth the extra pennies!!! more

If you like books... 3/27/2006

Then John K King is the store for you! It's a monstrous four floors filled with books, and if you're like me, you'll need pretty much a whole day (and a whole paycheck!) to wade through. They sell almost every single kind of book you can think of there, and old magazines. Whether you're looking for a used copy of a recent bestseller, or a book you read 30 years ago as a child, or an old textbook, you'll most likely find it here. The staff is helpful and friendly, and they love books as much as you do, if not more! Just try not to get lost in there, 'cause who knows when you might get out. more

Find rare books here 9/17/2005

I like this place very much for just one reason. They have a good collection of rare books. You can find any book here that you cannot find in any other stores. They charge their customers in accordance to the rarity of the books. Remove the rare books from this place and you would have just another bookstore in the town. I am someone who would pay anything (of course not my fortune) for the rarest of the rare books. They are very good at maintaining the standard of these old rare books. more
