Best

My son and I have been going to Joe's since he was 7 (he's now 21!) and we continue to love it. Generally, the service is not only professional and polite, but warm. In any rest...

Not worth the money 6/28/2010

I ate here recently with a large group, there was 14 of us, and was not impressed with the food. I ordered tuna sashimi and a side of sweet potato fries. The fries were yummy but the salad was only ""eh"". The portion side was extremely small and the price tag was large. On a positive note, the wait staff was extremely attentive and accommodating. They even offered to split the check into smaller groups, which is always nice with a large group. Pros: was very accomdating for a large crowd Cons: the food wasn't worth the price more

Great for drinks, bad for food 6/5/2010

I've been to the new Joe's (Newbury and Exeter) a few times now since I live in the area. If you're looking for a drink with a view, Joe's is definitely the place. They have a large area with huge windows that can be taken out to let in the spring/summer air. It's great for people watching if that's what you're into. If you're going for food, however, I suggest going somewhere else. The menu choices are really boring, the food itself is not great, and the portion sizes do not justify the price. You're better off going to Cheesecake Factory for similarly priced items, slightly better quality, more food-per-dollar and definitely more menu options. If it weren't for the bar area, this would be a 1 or 2 star rating. Pros: Great bar area Cons: Food quality, price and overall menu selection more

We love this restaurant 5/12/2010

My son and I have been going to Joe's since he was 7 (he's now 21!) and we continue to love it. Generally, the service is not only professional and polite, but warm. In any restaurant, one may find the occasional dud server (reading other reviews), but this has nearly never happened at Joe's and, when it does, I've noted that the server is gone quickly. The menu is varied and really does have something for everyone looking for very well-cooked basic american food. The ribs are the best we've had anywhere (and we've looked!), the specials are often interesting and well-done, the burgers are also amongst the best (always checked on to insure proper done-ness). Any issues with the food are dealt with quickly and with genuine apologies from one of the managers (issues are rare) and one really feels ""cared for"" in this respect. Also important to us is that the environment is very diner-friendly. There are several rooms all with sound-absorbing features that mean relative quiet no matter where you're sitting. It's really nice to have tablecloths and heavy cutlery in a moderate-priced restaurant and the seating is very comfortable. It's our fall-back, go to restaurant, and nearly never disappoints. Pros: wonderful service, very good food, reasonably priced Cons: occasional inconsistancy more

Above Average! 4/20/2010

Both of the Joe's American Bar & Grills in Boston (this one on Newbury, and the other on the waterfront) are great restaurants I highly recommend... and not just because of the delicious warm bread loaf they give you at the beginning of the meal (although that doesn't hurt! :) This one is a new addition to the city, and as it is located on Newbury Street, a popular shopping and dining street in Boston, it is a hot spot for both lunch and dinner. While sometimes chain restaurants seem very ""chain-ey"" this one has fresh food that is anything but ordinary. There is a great variety of vegetarian dishes and dishes for meat-eaters, too. They have everything from gourmet salads to steak to turkey burgers. My favorite part of the whole restaurant is the retractable roof -- so fantastic in the warmer weather, which is so welcome in Boston! It screams ""relax here with a cocktail while you people-watch."" Don't mind if I do... Pros: Great food, great drinks, great service Cons: Busy in the warmer months more

Where everybody knows your name... 4/10/2010

I like Amy. She's the blonde @ the upstairs bar that works during the week around lunchtime. I also like Kevin. He's the guy that comes on after Amy. I know that because they know I need a refill before I ask and they talk to me by name I will continue to go there, regardless of it being a chain. See, I'm not a fan of chain restaurants; this one just has the service. And the new location. And pretty nice sitting out there in the sun with the retractable roof and windows this past week. It's even got more of a crowd than Stephanie's, which is surprising to me, but everyone's got their time to reign! TIP: For a snack, I had the sweet potato fries. Perfectly salty and crisp! For drinkies, try the KJ Chardonnay (I ALWAYS fall back on this one) or something from their beer selection. Sam's on tap :) or enjoy a mojito or espresso martini @ happy hour. Hang around the upstairs bar. Pros: Super friendly bartenders, retractable roof! Cons: Sometimes too busy.. just get a place @ the bar! more

Eat at Joe's 2/10/2010

I've been eating at Joe's for years, because it really varies its lunch/dinner menu well enough to keep me coming back while keeping my favorites on. Example: french onion soup and burger au poivre. The soup is deep and rich and the cheese is crusted as it should be. The fully pepper crusted patty is one of my favorites in the city and the meat is juicy through and through. I get this almost every time. Whenever there is an issue, and Ive had instances where something went, wrong, management was quick to act, and the meal was comp'ed. Good food, good service, cant go wrong with that. Pros: Consistent american fare Cons: spotty service more

Worst Joe's experience ever w/ Darmouth Street 9/4/2009

I ordered the Baked Chicken. I have eaten inside Joe's American Bar & Grill restaurants before, but this time I ordered through an online dining-in service. This may be the reason that my food was so ill-prepared. Below is the description of my meal provided by their restaurant. Cons: Careless preparation of food / disturbing finds more

Uncomfortable Experience for Parents 8/10/2009

Went to Joe's yesterday for lunch. Had been there before so thought I knew what to expect (good comfort food, relaxed atmosphere). I have a 1-year old and, as happens, he had a few loud outbursts as learns how to use his voice. After one of these squeals, a young woman at the table adjacent to us got up and approached her server. It seems that our child and his voice were making her uncomfortable. That's fine - different strokes for different folks. Pros: Friendly, attentive staff Cons: Patrons more

Needs a revamp. 1/4/2009

I have been here a few times actually it is the first place I ever ate in boston. I ate there again last night and the condition of the place has dropped a little and the menu hasnt changed in four years. Saying that I had the rib eye and it was fine. Athmosphere is only ok. Pros: Great outdoor dining in the summer Cons: Needs a revamp more

Very dissapointed 11/4/2008

More like Below Average Joe's Bar and Grill. My friend was raving about the baked chicken and it was garbage! The chicken had next to nothing flavor, and it was supposed to be stuffed with cornbread but it was laying next to it. Second, the cornbread was very dry. more

WASTED NIGHT OUT 8/10/2008

Last night we (party of 4) had the displeasure of dining at your restaurant in Woburn. I should have been for-warned by all the empty seats for 8 pm on a Sat. night. I?ll get straight to the point. First, on three occasions, our server, Kristen was nowhere to be found. I?m not talking about she was briefly in the kitchen, or checking on an order. I mean outside smoking a butt for 15 mins nowhere to be found. And once, at a time immediately after the busboys brought the wrong entrees to our table.(and why is it your busboys are serving the meals, anyway??) Cons: service, food, more

Awful experience, embarrassed.... 5/21/2008

This was our friend's first time in Boston on a Sunday, so we thought we'd take him to a good, but quick brunch (the lines at other places were an hour long.) Joe's had been consistently good in the past. Pros: location, short wait Cons: poor food, dirty bathrooms, poor service. more

Great burgers!!! 10/14/2007

It was a rainy afternoon and we were looking for a good American burger. We picked just the right place. Friendly staff greated us at the door and we were seated promptly. The restaurant was cozy in the mist of the afternoon rain. It was warm and welcoming. And did I mention the burgers? They were delicious. Great wait staff. Great prices. Pros: great service, great prices, great food more

Great Sangria, Good Food, Crappy Service 10/10/2007

I came to Joe's on my last day of vacation looking for a light lunch. I didn't know that eating by myself meant that I was to be treated poorly. The gentleman who greated me at the door was extremely nice; and the girl who took me to my table was also lovely - but that is where the courtious service ended. I had been sitting there for almost 10 minutes before my waitress finally came to take my order. I ordered the Pink Sangria (lovely, I highly recommend it), a salad (which was fine but not outstanding - fresh but the dressing was bland) and the crab cake app (which was mostly just beautiful sweet crab meat and little filler; I wish I'd ordered just that and the sangria). After that my waitress basically just plopped down my meal and went awol for the remainder of the time; except when the couple next to me ordered coffee and she reached ACROSS me to take the little container of sugar off my table and give it to them. She never asked me how my food was or if she could get me anything else. When she saw I had finished my food, she just brought me the check without a word. I know servers don't typically make much off of single patrons, but I have friends in the service industry so I try to tip usually 40% when I'm out alone. And while I'm too nice to not leave her anything, let's just say she was luck y to get ten. If you go to this establishment, make sure you bring a friend. Pros: Food, Sangria Cons: Service more

Been to Better 10/11/2006

I have eaten here 3 times and always it's the same. True the waitstaff was very nice and very helpfull, but the food couldn't make the cut. Like baseball it's 3 strikes and your out. Pros: New items, romantic in evening Cons: Poor quality foods more

great service and friendly atmosphere 9/26/2006

greeted immediately and friendly service, was very impressed with the service of the bartender Lisa and her friendly attitude.Prices reasonable and food above average. more

Eat @ Joe's, again? probably not. 10/10/2005

It's a nice looking place, w/ a decent Sunday Brunch selection on the menu. However, the ""spicy"" bloody mary wasn't spicy, my ""Filet Mignon Eggs Benedict"" came out w/ some really questionable cut of ""beef"" and a poached egg that was really over-cooked to a hard yoke. I asked for a substitution, and instead of a choice, my substitution request was made a side dish. It's ok, but could be so much better to get to at least average. Pros: Clean, Prompt Service, Kid Friendly Cons: Chef?, Food? more

Great place for all dining needs!! 2/17/2005

This place is really great if you have special dietary needs. They care about things like that. The salad that I had was sensational. I know you might be thinking, ""Oh that's great if you like salads, but what about me?"" I urge you to just try it! My friend ordered a salad too and she is a changed woman. The food is spectacular. The value is good too, because you get a lot of food. Good date place too. Pros: food, ambiance Cons: waiters more

No Oyster Crackers 3/3/2003

I agree the calm chowder is excellent, although I ate there on Thursday night, 2/27/03 around 7pm. I ordered the clam chowder and they brought the chowder out with crackers. When the waiter came back I asked for crackers and they said they ran out. My boyfriend and I felt they should have sent someone out to a local grocery and bought crackers, afterall, what is chowder without the crackers!!!! more
