Booked with reservation with colleagues based on it being rated Best in Portland...The service was great, but the food was a huge disappointment. The calamari was great, fresh an...

Another great Italian "DON'T MISS" dining experience 4/2/2010

Chef Chris Thompson has done an incredible job of presenting excellent Italian Food that compares with the East Coast Italian Dining Experience. We were asked when making our reservation, if anyone in our party had a food allergy the chef should be aware of. A huge bonus before we even arrived. When arriving, we were greeted by a delightful hostess who seated us right away even though our dining companions were running a little late. Erin, (our charming, beautiful, intelligent, and personable waitress was marvelous) assured us not to worry and we had wine and some of the best calamari ever while waiting. When our friends arrived, they were seated immediately and had wine and salad, after which our orders were taken for entrees. Two lasagnas, one catch of the day, and one pasta specialty of the house with Italian sausage. All four, perfectly prepared, served eye appealingly, and delish beyond words. I was invited to come back to the kitchen to meet the chef after offering our compliments via Erin, and apprising her that I was a retired certified exec chef and culinary arts teacher (retired after 40 years) in Philadelphia. Chirs and I became immediate friends during which time he has invited me to go fly fishing with him when his schedule permits. I can assure you we will be regular faces at Iorio. I give it one of the best of the best. Pros: Fantas tic Cons: NONE more

A Gem on Hawthorne! 3/5/2010

I love this little unique cafe that's part of Pastaworks. Kevin Gibson, formerly of Castagna, graces the counter, preparing each dish to order. The sandwiches are fresh and delicious, salads are one-of-a-kind and the seasonal menu surprises often. more

Food is great...service not. 2/16/2010

I had came upon this restaurant a few times while looking for a great place to eat outside of the downtown Portland area. We live in the Pearl but prefer to find fine dining outside the downtown area. Took my girlfriend to Lorio for Valentines Day since it was rated with high marks. They had a great deal for dinner so I was able to walk away spending just over a $100. We had to wait about five minutes to be greeted behind a curtain as you enter so nobody would ever know you were standing there unless you peeked around the curtain. There was some confusion on where to seat us so the lady was shuffling names around as we both waited patiently. The atmosphere is pretty cool so I can see how it was rated one of the "most romantic restaurants" in Portland. The food was delicious and the drinks were pretty tasty. I am not a demanding customer and all I really expect is to be check on once in awhile as well as keep my beverage filled. Unfortunately, this didn't happen. Our waiter checked on us only one time but made sure his other tables were happy. We waited 15 minutes after we had finished dinner for him to clear our table and bring desert. Both of us made eye contact but apparently he didn't see the signal. Again, most of his time was talking to other customers or standing at the bar. Pros: Food is well prepared and taste great! Cons: Don't expect great service more

Accordion To Me...Iorio Is Fat Kitty Approved 10/22/2009

I am simple and to the point. Coming from a NYC Italian **** background cooking w/the best and power players on the Food Network back in the 90's I know what I am talking about. You enter into a red rose basically. Nice art. Not frilly fancy. Smart, simple, clean w/a glow y ambiance. Our food. The $2 bean antipasto was my fave, nice light dress and near and dear to me, garbanzos. The butternut squash spread and foccocia was heavenly, and less caloric than butter. The vegetable lasagna was perfection. My friend had the ravioli of the day. I highly recommend this restaurant and the prices are very fair. Great for a 1st date i would think. Ciao all, come get a falafel too at fat Kitty Falafel! . Pros: Great service, wonderful food. more
