Best Chinese food in town. 12/1/2010

My first trip to the Hunan garden was exceptional. Shar the waitress is the most sweet and acomadating to anyone with health needs. One gentalman in our group was dietbetic. She took his order and added a few changes so he could enjoy his meal . They will cook your meal any way you like. If you want to subsitute beans for baby corn. They will do it. If you want spicy, and I mean spicy. Say I want spicy not MN spicy either. They will fix you right up. Joe the chef is just as friendly as Shar. The Princess chicken is my favorite and would recommend it along with sizzeling rice soup and their lushious eggrolls. Shar and Joe thanks for a great time at your restraunt. I enjoyed the volcano drink with the long straws. It was nummie. I hope to see you both on my next visit and it was a pleasure meeting such nice and fun people to be around. Joe thanks for the history lesson. more

Great food and great service 10/9/2008

Yes, Hunan Garden is a restaurant that doesn't have many pretenses. I have been occasionally going there since the early 1990s. It offers good food served by good people--a few of the staff have been there since I began eating there. The drinks are strong and they still serve a Blue Hawaiian from a ceramic buddha with a straw sticking out from his belly button. The restaurant area is clean and has been updated a bit in the last few years with large red banners with Chinese characters, e.g., good fortune, happiness, etc. I really enjoy the mu shu pork and although mu shu chicken is'nt on the menu, the kitchen will make it anyway. The place is great for families. The bar, from what I heard, seems to be a lively place. As others have said, the lunch buffet is great and is well attended by downtown office workers. If you're looking for upscale elegance, this isn't the place for you. If you're looking for a good tummy-filling Chinese dinner, then look no further. Pros: big portions, good service, good drinks, Cons: noise from bar can be too loud more

Best Orange Beef in town! 8/19/2008

Now this is a place to relax and share good food! We especially love the tables with the lazy suzans in the middle of the round tables. You have to order the volcanos with the super long straws. The Orange Beef and the Sesame Chicken are the best in town and the servers treat you like family. The place isn't posh or trendy, but its real people serving good food. They go out of there way for special requirements...like no MSG. more

Best Buy for the Buck in St. Paul 12/13/2007

If you want good entertainment and good food for a reasonable price. - go to the Hunan on the nights when Ray plays there. Open up a little and have some fun there. This can easily be done by having one of their famous ""Volcanoes""! Bring some friends to share it with. They have the restaurant side if you are there just to eat and it is quieter. However, if you want some good food with entertainment then sit on the bar side where the band is. This isn't an upscale place but all types of people are regulars there. Also, you cannot beat the lunch buffet. Pros: Free entertainment - lunch buffet is excellent deal - food is good value - volcanoes! Cons: Not real upscale for downtown -- if you care more

Best Chinese Food in Saint Paul 6/12/2007

If you are looking for a real cultural mix of people and some good music, Hunan Garden is the place. Hunan features a mix of preppy, urban, country, latino, etc. etc. of people and backgrounds. You will see someone who looks just like you. I went on Saturday night and sitting across the bar from me was nice mix of a chinese, ethiopian, black, native american, latino and of course caucasion from preppy to urban, punk to drunk. It was AWESOME for Saint Paul entertainment. The juke box is linked to the internet so you can pick almost any song you can think of from past or current titles. Pros: Good Food, Bar Enviornment or Resturaunt if you choose Cons: If you want quiet, sometimes you can hear the music from the bar on late nights. more

We went there before the Wild game and it wasn't busy at all. Bar area was really smoky, but we were seated in the dining area and couldn't smell any smoke. The waiter was really nice and helpful, suggested couple of dishes. The food was prepared so fast, it was amazing! I had shrimp with lobser sauce - it was good. The only thing that I didn't like about the place is that they had a sign of Amstell Light on the outside of the restaurant, but when I asked for it, the waiter said that they don't sell it. Strange! more
