Humane Society of South Brevard

Today I brought my younger siblings to come with me as we dropped off a mother cat and kittens who are in need of a desperate home. As we approached the building, we noticed that it was an extremely small house and not an actually veterinary facility. We approached the front door to find it locked, but I poked my head in the window and saw at least 10 cats sitting around on the desks. I finally found a lady there and asked her if she could take the cats, and she said she could not unless I called the manager. I was already suspicious and I asked if we may come inside and look around. I was shocked, it was utterly filthy and disgusting. There is about 70 cats (from what I asked the woman) in a small house no bigger than my own apartment. I asked if if these cats are soayed and neutered, but as I walked around to see the cats, I saw males who still had their testicles and we saw some females who were in heat. I told my siblings not to touch any of the cats after I found that multiple cats have eye infection and sinus infections. One cat who was a calico female appeared to have green mucus running from her nose. The house reeked of putrid cat urine and many cats who were in cages, the cages themselves were disgusting and had filthy buildup on them. I was really disappointed, as I'm a cat lover and even though their intentions may be good, the cats need to be somewhere else. Its not a proper facility and I'm 100% certain it would not pass a health inspection. I really recommend taking any cats in need of help to a proper facility. more

I read through the previous reviews in disgust. I have first hand experience WORKING at the South Brevard cat shelter weekly for a year or so. Though I agree the smell is pungent and the small house seems to be in disarray, I cannot stress enough how loved every animal in that shelter is. I understand that those who are dropping off kittens may seem unwelcome, but there is literally no way to accept any more cats. Every cage (thoroughly cleaned daily by able volunteers such as myself, equipt with water, food, a litter box, and towels) in inhabited. In response to the comment, "30 animals are killed daily," I scoff. It is true that the S.Brevard shelter euthanizes cats, but NOT on a daily basis, and they have very good cause to do so. In the year that I have been there, the only cats I have known to be euthanized are those who are terminally ill or have AIDS and are putting the workers and other cats at risk (AIDS is transferrable from feline to feline, and from feline to cat and vise versa). I agree that the house itself is in bad shape, but the cats that inhabit that house are in the best of care with the workers and the other volunteers. I truely admire their hard work and dedication, especially the fact that they will be frank with you about whether or not they will adopt to you or not. They recognize that not everyone is able to take care of another life. It is SO incredibly difficult to see a cat come back to the shelter, and it is difficult on the animal itself. So I ask you to look past the smell, and to lovingly adopt a cat into your family. Do NOT look towards pet shops!! They breed those animals to be sold, and the cats at the shelters are just as loving, and have been waiting to be welcomed into a loving home :) more

The building needs help. Our City needs to kick in and help. I have been doing everything I can to help homeless animals. More people need to kick in. The animals cages are awful with poop in almost every cage. I have pictures of animals without water and food and poop and pee everywhere. I also have pictures of very skinny animals that should have been placed into foster homes before putting out for adoption. There for awhile I noticed that they were killing over 30 animals a day. My son and I took kittens that we rescued from a pregnant cat that came to our home. We brought the stray in and let her have her kittens in our home. Once the kittens (7) were old enough we found homes for 5 of them. We tried to call this Humane Society many times. No one answered the phone. We drove there and the first impression was one of disgust. We had to ring the bell. A man answered and would not open the door more than a few inches. I told him our story and he said they could not take the kittens. There was a sign posted on the door telling you to call and make prearrangements. How can you make prearrangements if no one answers the phone? He would never open the door. A lady came to look at the cats in the shelter. He opened the door just so she could go in. She was not inside more than 15 seconds and came out and said the smell was disgusting. She decided to take one of our beautiful kittens home. I am going to contact the Regional Humane Society Organization to tell them of this behavior at this shelter. more

I've adopted a few animals from the Humane Society, and feel like we really did rescue them. All of these animals are just so anxious for a loving home where they don't have to be caged and don't risk death. Way too many animals are killed here! more

In our town, we have very little in the way of no kill shelters. This is no exception. We have a large amount of animals here who are abandoned, or dropped off due to the owner not being able to care for them. And this operates on basically donations and volunteers. There is low spay and neuter available in the county but it's still too much for some to pay, so the unwanted animals are brought here. We have a few pet rescue groups but not enough to go around. This is a sad place, if you are seeking a pet, please don't buy it from a pet store. Go here and you're sure to find someone to win your heart. Adopt one today if you can. more
